looking for a point and shoot camera (for camera dummies), very compact, good quality pics, absolutely no chance for red eye, and ease of use.

the Canon PowerShot SD600 looks like the choice for me but i'd like to get some feedback from you guys before i get it.

memory?
battery life and choices?
pics indoors and low light?
outside in the sun?

price isn't a big issue and small may be the biggest issue because i hate carrying things around.

i want to get this before the vegas trip on wednesday so "costco" is out because they are over an hour from here and i won't have time. i have best buy, circuit city......well, every place but costco around here.

appreciate any feedback.

Memory for cameras these days is either Secure Digital (SD) or Compact Flash (CF), come in a variety of sizes. Check and see which the camera takes.

Battery life- Most take AA batteries. My recommendation is buy 2 sets of rechargables and a charger, have one in the camera, one in the charger and you'll never walk no-power, in a pinch regular AAs work just fine. You will never fill a 512 meg memory card on one set of batteries, is my experience, I have a canon powershot A60. It's not a matter of the camera being "bad", just that the camera burns juice just like anything else. the two battery swap will ensure you always have a charged pair.

Have done pics indoors with mine and outdoors and some in some VERY poor light and they still work out. The camera will stop itself down enough outdoors long as yah arent taking pictures of the sun!!

Redeye is the reflection off the back of the eye from the flash. There are SOME cameras that have a pre-flash light flash that tricks the eye into reacting to the flash on it, so the real flash catches the eyes prepared. Usually yah see this in low to moderate light, when the pupil is wide open, so the flash reflects before the pupil can react and close (it isnt a millisecond operation) by doing a "preflash" the eye reacts, closes down the pupil, and the REAl flash doesnt penetrate. Even then dont count on never getting redeye, but programs like photoshop and paintshop can help yah turn the "red" to "pupil black" and yah wont have to live with it.

And whatever you get, be prepared to be unhappy in six months because yah didnt wait *grin* cuz there will be one with more pixels, and more doodads then!!!

I have the Cannon SD550. Remember a few weeks ago I said that I paid $399 for it at Costco and they gave me a $100 refund because the price dropped to $299..........hell of a nice small 7.1 mega pixels camera. I bought a 2gig Chip and I think it will hold something like 800 pictures( I think)..........and remember the return policy. See the website below that can be used to order anything from Costco over the Internet......This has been a public service announcement..... :142smilie

yep just buy one of the big extended memory chips when you buy your camera.........you can discard the one that comes with it and never have to worry about running out of memory

thanks for the info, folks. i got the one i asked about after researching it. seems like the perfect one for me. i got the 528mb extended memory chip and they didn't have an extra battery but the sales guy said it lasts from 5-7 hours on a full charge and i know i won't ever use that up.

you'll see the results when i return from vegas. the results will determine if i keep the damn thing :)
