Airport security

I travel quite a bit. It probably averages out to 2-3 weeks out of every 4 over the course of a year.

When I saw the new rules on airport security I was worried because I almost never check bags. I've had a couple of lost bags and plus I like the time it saves by not having to wait for checked baggage.

Well, I have to say that it is not bad at all. In fact, I would say that travel is even better in many ways. Here's why I am in favor of keeping these new rules banning liquids and gels from carry-on baggage (along with preventing attacks, of course):

-The added time during check-in is minimal. Granted, I arrived at a pretty slow time today, but even with United being short-staffed and one guy having a problem getting his surfboard checked in, the entire process only took 5 minutes.

-Screening checkpoints are much more bearable. It used to be annoying to have everyone get 2 bags, plus a laptop, plus shoes and whatever else through the X-Ray machines. The lines would especially backup because lots of travelers skip check-in by printing their tickets at home and only taking carry-on luggage. Since almost everyone has to check at least one bag, you avoid that bottleneck at the checkpoint.

-The terminals are less congested. When everyone used to have a carry-on bag with them, seating areas would get crowded. That didn't matter too much to me since I go to the Red Carpet Club, but even the executive lounges would have plenty of bags to maneuver around during busy times. Today in the Red Carpet Club it was super easy to get a drink at the bar and be disgusted that everyone gave two craps about boring a** golf on TV.

-Boarding is faster. Again, this one doesn't affect me as much because I get priority boarding, but it definitely took less time to get people on the plane because carry-ons were gone.

-Overhead bins are open. It used to be a mad dash for overhead bin space, especially on flights with a lot of business travelers on them. From now on I can spend more time in the Red Carpet Club because I won't have to worry about missing out on overhead bin space.

-Luggage retrieval is less painful than I feared. The one part of the trip that did take a somewhat significant amount of additional time was waiting for checked baggage after landing. Again, since I have priority my bag was among the first to come out, but it's still pretty efficient overall.

I'm curious to hear from other folks who have traveled with the new rules. I'd especially like to hear from folks who have to travel a lot. I was pleasantly surprised.

I was a little miffed at the new rules, because like you, I travel a lot and haven't checked a bag in years. Don't trust that I'll always get it back, from personal experience. Went to Europe for a month this spring and didn't even check a bag...good points you made, though - I thought it was going to be a real pain, but I guess I don't have a choice, now... I have no special priority, though, so we'll see how it goes... I was lucky enough to fly back the night these new rules went into affect, so I haven't experienced them yet. The Denver airport has notorious security, too - I was at the airport last year 2 hours early and missed a flight because of extra screening. But you made me feel better about the whole situation :)

HH,

I think you'll be OK with it. Let me know how Denver is with the new rules. I've only flown there a handful of times myself.

LAX is surprisingly good when it comes to helping people make flights. As long as I've been at least 1:15 early I've always been OK. A couple of times they've had to pull us out of the check-in line and speed us through to make the flight.

Can you carry on video cameras? I am not checking that. I'll just leave it at home.

Yeah, cameras and laptops are fine as carry-ons. The only real difference is gels, liquids and aerosols.

When I mentioned no carry-ons, I should have been more specific. Almost everyone on the flight had a laptop bag or other carry on with essential personal stuff like cameras, iPods, etc. It is just the larger carry-ons that carry clothes and such that were gone.

Nick... if you think having "priority" had/has anything to do with you luggage coming down the belt first you are sadly mistaken, but from first to last even off a large jet is probably only a matter of 5 minutes difference. The only reason you got your luggage early was because of it's "luck of the draw" placement on the bag cart.

I travel an average of eight days a month and recognized this long ago. Checking anything larger than a laptop or maybe an overnight bag is the only way to go and well worth not having to lug that crap all over two seperate airport terminals. I try not to ever be in such a hurry that the extra 10 to 15 minutes matter to me.

I couldn't agree more.

Mama is right on about the luggage. The real hold up with luggage is the people who like Nick memtioned that carry on everything or used to like he was saying he did so they don't have to check anything.

What a pain in the butt watching these people struggle up the aisles trying to fit their over sized bags in the bins overhead or stuff them under the seat in front. A real joke.

Checking is the way to go, sorry Mama, know it makes more work for you.

HELL
I just got back from Vegas for 6 days with my wife and wanted to chime in on this topic.

I carried on both a digital camera and video camcorder with no qualms going through the checkpoint at all.

The biggest complaint I had was not with getting to Vegas as they always seem to get your luggage out quicky so one can get to the tables faster, but returning here to Pittsburgh....man was that painful. I think they brought our checked luggage from the plane over by a stubborn mule or a one-legged person pulling a cart. It took nearly 30 minutes for us to get our luggage. But then again we flew USAir and I am sure most know they don't have the presence here anymore after being a hub and filing bankruptcy. Couple this with the fact that the baggage claim must of had 1000 people jockeying for position.

Safe travels to all.

Judge/Ctown I'll tell you another abuse that gets me. I flew Southwest to Vegas and they don't have seating assignments. They have this thing about small children and impaired people getting on 1st. I never saw so many knee braces in my life and "children" that were taller than their parents.
Was 1st time to fly with wife and never got to sit together there or back. My fault there because I waited till end to board as I hate standing in line.
Thought I'd be smarter on way back and got in line right away and stood there bout 20 minutes.
After the 1st 2 "special" lines went- I was at head of next line. Got on and saw several with 2 seats vacant but as we started to sit down --we got the ole "these seats are saved" spiel and had to set apart again. Next time instead of biting my tongue I'll say "thank you for saving them for me and sit down anyway.

DTB -- Southwest is my favorite company. You just have to check in 24 hours in advance online. Then you don't have to stand in line. It's basically like being first in the B line.

I flew from Nashville to Columbus, OH on Wednesday, and it was the fastest security check in a long time. I would say I was in line for less than 5 minutes, and it was at 9 am so not an off-time.

I have flown twice so far this summer, both times from Indianapolis... once to Ft. Lauderdale and once to Tampa. Both flights were on Northwest but the Ft. Lauderdale flight was prior to the federal aviation rules changes. I could tell a big difference when I flew to Tampa last weekend. The lines for security were much shorter and you didn't have to watch people hauling huge bags onboard trying to cram them into overhead compartments. I didn't have any problems, and didn't notice anyone having any problems at either airport. I agree with the "jockeying" for position at the luggage return though. It's like a free for all!

For what it's worth, I know that Northwest is getting ready to go on strike... but the stewardesses and pilots on both flights could not have been nicer. Now if they could give the guy working the gate at Indy and attitude adjustment along with the biotch working ticketing at Tampa, I'd be happy. Both were very rude and dismissive.
