ok Sept 11th is my b-day (yes I know real happy day!). Now I have two questions I need an answer to:

1) In terms of population, what is considered a city? In other words, 50 000 a city? 100 000 a city? I would assume it would be different for every country, but does anybody know what Canada considers a city?

2) What happens if somebody kills somebody else in Antarctica? This is a place shared by 37 countries, so what happens in terms of the law? Yes I know there are only about 3000 people down there at one time but I'm sure some sort of crime occurs at least once a year.....so ummm what happens? Also, what do they do with the garbage? You can't burry it in miles upon miles of solid ice? Or can you?

city 4. (in Canada) a municipality of high rank, usually based on population. Don't know a thing in the world about killing somebody in Antarctica. Happy Birthday.

Article 8: allows for jurisdiction over observers and scientists by their own states

Antarctica is administered through meetings of the consultative member nations. Decisions from these meetings are carried out by these member nations (within their areas) in accordance with their own national laws. US law, including certain criminal offenses by or against US nationals, such as murder, may apply extra-territorially.

The U.S. Antarctic Program recycles more than four times as much of its waste as does the typical community in the United States. Every person at a U.S. station or field camp receives training in waste management within a week of arrival and is required to dispose of materials properly. Following is the list of recycle categories used at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, Antarctica. The other stations use similar lists.

if you've got other crazy questions about the south pole, shoot away. I've got a few friends that have done some extended projects down there and love yapping about it.

Garbage answer!

Garbage answer!

Happy Bday!!

In the past, the USA and other nations that had stations in Antarctica didn't worry very much about the environment. For example, at the McMurdo Station, the trash, including things that we consider hazardous chemicals today, would be piled on the sea ice next to the base. When the ice melted in the summer the trash would drop into an area known as Winter Quarters Bay. This bay is still extremely polluted because of what was done in the past, but fortunately an underwater ridge keeps the pollution from spreading into the rest of McMurdo Sound and then into the Ross Sea. In the past people also burned trash in Antarctica. Today, however, all trash and garbage, including even food waste, from U.S. stations is shipped back to the USA for disposal.

Anyone who goes to the U.S. stations in Antarctica, which are operated by the National Science Foundation (NSF), is told about the recycling program and urged to be sure to put things in the correct bin.

Kansas City area for who knows how long....
definition of city

definition of city

it is not rigorously defined in Canada (or most places, for that matter). Some countries and states in US do have strict definitions, based on political considerations and history----definitions demographers or cartographers would never use.

demographers have no internationally accepted definition (involves differences over population density, political boundaries, amount of open space before it becomes "rural" etc)

that's why you can see some expert's or gov't list of "largest cities in the world" and they will disagree with one another.

wiki sez in Canada:

Several entities go by the name "cities" in general conversation:

Metro Areas - These are defined by Statistics Canada's Census Metropolitan Area unit which groups together municipalities.

Urban Areas - These are defined by Statistics Canada's Urban Area unit, which groups population by continuous population density, regardless of municipal boundaries.

Municipalities - These have many different types across Canada, including cities. Please see List of the 100 largest municipalities in Canada by population.

and here's a Canadian paper trying for a rigorous definition of "rural" (they fail at it).

many simple terms we take for granted the specialists disagree and argue over constantly, like "planet", or "classical" literature, "big block engine" (the Ford 351 "Cleveland" I say is NOT a big block!).

oh, happy B'day!
