YTD Record (3-0)
God bless the beginning of the football season. I think you see a lot of lines that are based on reputation and perception. If the following two games were played later this season I don?t think the lines would look anything like they do today. Having said that?
Oregon (-5) I absolutely love this game. I took OU at home against UW last week and was mortified to see them struggle against such a bad football team. I?m still not impressed with Thompson (how many wide open receivers can you overthrow?) and the fact that they have looked bad against the likes of UAB is pretty telling in my opinion. Oregon, on the other hand, is a very good team. They?re coming off a hard-fought victory at Fresno and now they come home to face the Sooners. Autzen is one of the best home field advantages in all of college football. It?s very hard for a team to come to Eugene and beat the Ducks. They have two great backs in Stewart and Johnson who have are averaging over 160 yards/game between them and they each have 3 touchdowns in the first 2 games of the season. Dixon at QB, while not Heisman material, is an accurate passer who does a good job of managing the game. And while the Ducks may not have the best defense in the nation, I do think they will do a good job of keying on Peterson and limiting his yardage. I don?t expect them to get beat by Thompson?s arm. Lastly, I think there is a little bit of revenge at stake here for the Ducks. They lost last year?s bowl game 17-14 to the Sooners and they are 0-6 all time against OU. Maybe I?m wrong about OU. Maybe they?re a good team that hasn?t jelled yet. I?m certainly not betting on it though. I honestly think they get pasted by 14+ points on Saturday.
Fresno State (-3) First things first? I bought the hook in this game. I really don?t think I?ll need it but I absolutely hate betting road faves in college foots so I?m playing it safe. I?m not going to overanalyze this one, I?m just going with the better team. FSU?s running game is very good. I don?t see the U being able to take that weapon away from them, no matter how hard they try. Brandstater isn?t a guy who is going to light up the scoreboard, but if he can limit his mistakes Fresno will be fine. On the other side of the ball, I think the Huskies will also try to establish their running game. Everyone likes to talk about Stanback because of his highlight reel scrambling ability, but Louis Rankin is probably the best player on the Huskies offense. I?m still not sure why Willingham starts James over him, but that?s another matter altogether. Their receiving corp (Williams, Shackelford, Russo, etc.) are all very average. As I said before, Stanback is a great scrambler and a great athlete, but he?s not a guy who is going to beat you with his arm. I expect FSU to stack the box and try to take away UW?s running game. I really think it warrants mentioning that UW was a 2-9 team last year and they really didn?t do anything to improve on that this year. I think people might be a little misled by the fact that they hung around with OU last week. I don?t think that?s an indication of UW?s talent, but rather an indictment on Oklahoma?s.
Good luck everyone?
