If a giant like Pary is on the verge of banning US Players, things can't look good for the rest of the books out there.

Also, 888 gaming, which controls pacific poker, have also banned us players.

"Gambling online faces collapse in US after Senate ban

By Dominic Walsh
The Times UK

AMERICA's $6 billion (?3.2 billion) internet gambling industry is facing meltdown after the US Senate pushed through a Bill at the weekend outlawing the processing of bets by banks and credit companies.

The surprise move, which is expected to spark a massive share sell-off, will prompt London-listed 888 Holdings to announce this morning that it is halting its entire US-facing operation, accounting for half its business.

PartyGaming, the world's biggest internet gambling company, said last night that it was "still evaluating the situation", although industry sources believe it will also announce a cessation of its services to American punters.

However Sportingbet, which was celebrating on Friday after a New York court released its former chairman, who had been facing gambling charges, will tell investors that it is still digesting the implications of the Bill.

Despite the Bill's prescriptive nature, it excludes local online betting on horseracing, fantasy leagues and lotteries. It also has no impact on the hundreds of casinos and gambling emporia that dot America, ranging from the neon palaces of Las Vegas and Atlantic City to the riverboat casinos that ply their trade on the Mississippi.

One senior internet gambling executive said last night: "This is the worst form of protectionism I have ever seen. This will drive internet gambling underground and consumer protection will go out of the window. The religious groups that lobbied for this may live to regret it."

The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Bill needs only to be signed by President Bush to become law. Legal sources predict that he will do so in the next two weeks, possibly as early as Wednesday.

The passing of the Bill in the early hours of Saturday surprised the industry. Although it had successfully negotiated Congress, its passage through the Senate looked likely to be blocked through lack of parliamentary time.

However, Bill Frist, the Republican leader in the Senate, got the measure through by attaching it to an unrelated Bill that enhances port security.

"Gambling is a serious addiction that undermines the family, dashes dreams and frays the fabric of society," Dr Frist said. "The bottom line is simple: internet gambling is illegal. Although we can't monitor every online gambler or regulate offshore gambling, we can police the financial institutions that disregard our laws."

The ban may drive some small companies out of business, although big operators such as 888 and PartyGaming will highlight the strong prospects of their non-US business.

However, 888 is expected to warn its shareholders in a Stock Exchange statement this morning that its withdrawal from America will force it to pare back its cost base, resulting in a significant hit against this year's profits."

I cashed out of party and stars yesterday for the most part leaving less than 1k in each.

starting to drain out of neteller now. smaller groups of deposits to my bank account.

i know i want to stay hopeful, and i kinda do, but I won't have my money frozen by the nazi type us government.

when i feel its safe again I will go back, but not until. its time i started playing live again. been too lazy. i don't suggest a large run on the bank, but if i'm going to be honest, i pulled a big chunk out of pinny too where a lot of my money was.

this country and frist have crossed the line.

its not hard to re-fund neteller and the sites, but in my opinion, why chance leaving larger balances?

i agree. i tried to tell myself things would be okay but if a company as significant as party, who earns a lot of money from US players, is considering shutting the doors then it makes me hesitant. No way I'm leaving close to 5 figs in neteller accounts.

thanks for posting.

i'm guessing, and it's a total guess, that all the "public" gaming corps will ban U.S. players but the others will operate as usual (pus*ies!) BECAUSE IT'S LEGAL WHERE THEY ARE AND THEY'RE NOT DOING ANYTHING WRONG, PERIOD!

sportingbet, a public company, doesn't seem to be backing down so maybe i'm wrong.

i highly douby that books like pinnacle, cris, wsex, olympic, betjamaica, etc, etc will close out american business.

time will tell but i am confident of the above.

i agree with what you wrote. and i am still funded, but i'm not going to leave large balances. if it costs me $15 bucks for the withdrawl and I have piece of mind, i say money well spent. I just advise to keep what you need in there and not large balances and pay the transaction fees to fund and withdraw for the piece of mind that comes with it.

tx for the feedback mj, i guess it's better to leave in some change than not be able to put it in later. I guess it depends on how much exposure someone is open to. For me at this point, losing almost 10k, even if a small chance, would be a decent chunk of change to me.

i agree with you, even if there is a lockdown the $ won't just disappear. Neteller and sites like party will always refund it before it's a done deal. I think everyone is still waiting for the legislation to actually be put in writing.

As we all know, when paypal was blocked neteller popped up. There will always be options for us.

I'm hoping maybe one of our govt representatives can come over my place tonight and wipe my ass for me once i'm done taking a dump.

Hello XXXXXXX,

Thank you for your email.

We appreciate and share your concerns about the bill which passed in
the US Congress today regarding the funding of internet gaming, as an
attachment to a Port Security bill.

PokerStars' management and legal team are examining the bill at this
time. Until we understand the potential impact of the bill, we cannot
comment on how it will impact our players or PokerStars. Please note
that the bill includes a 270-day window for enforcement procedures to
be established, so we do not expect to see any immediate changes in
the ability to transfer funds to and from PokerStars.

Also please remember that your money is safe on PokerStars. All
player funds are in a segregated account at the Royal Bank of Scotland.

As always, we thank you for playing on PokerStars.

Regards,

The bill will likely be signed some time in the next 7 to 10 days. If I had to guess, I'd say next Thursday, or the Tuesday following that. From there, some provisions go into effect immediately (the prohibition on accepting prohibited gambling transactions)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mr K., can you elaborate on this? If I am reading you right, withdrawls from neteller would be illegal within the next 2 weeks or so?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Actually, I am not sure this bill will make *withdraws* illegal at any point. Accepting *Deposits*, however are definitely going to be illegal starting on the day the bill is signed. The casinos and cardrooms are the ones getting [censored] here, not the players -- though you could argue that players will feel just as much pain, although in a less direct fashion. The legal risk certainly resides disproportionately with the casinos, cardrooms, and financial services providers.
