On the course!
I just bought a new machine. They told me they would clean out all the start up shit, but they seem to have missed a basic.

I can't set my home page! No matter what I do, it still defaults to their crappy AOL page, and I hate it!

Anyone?

yyz, go to add/remove programs and delete anything with aol in it.

get adaware and spybot and run both.

then try setting it through internet properties. if that doesn't work, go to microsoft.com and download the newest internet explorer. you should be able to change if you get the new version.

and jack, I'd get rid of that ravens avatar as well. they cheated to win a superbowl and cockteased everyone this year. :)

try this i found on google:

do a system save in system before doing it though in case something gets fcked up so you can do a system restore:

If you still have problems, some ISP's provide a customized version of IE. Some Web pages will also reset your home page and do this. One of the customizations they might make is to disable the ability to change the home page, so that you are forced to use their home page. You can re-enable this by making a small change in the Windows registry.

In Regedit, navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel

In the right-hand pane, right-click the "HomePage" value, then select Modify. Change it to: 00 00 00 00

Also change either or these to zero 0 instead of 1 if present:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] - DWORD "NoSetHomePage"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions] - DWORD "NoSetHomePage"=dword:00000001

If you don't have this key, browse to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

and in the right hand pane, double click "Local Page" and set equal to "C:\WINDOWS\System\blank.htm" (no quotes) which will hopefully set your Home Page to blank and then allow you to subsequently modify it using Internet Options.

Exit regedit and reboot.

When you reboot, you should be able to change the home page again.

Some pages will also download a program which keeps changing it back. Go to Start | Run and type:
msconfig
and press <Enter> or click OK. Go to the Startup tab.
See if you can identify any suspicious programs. If you can, uncheck it, If you can't, change the home page to what you want and then uncheck one and then reboot. Try IE. If the Web page changed, change it back and then try msconfig again, rechecking the last one and unchecking the next. Keep doing this until you find the culprit.

Post #12 is the correct method because it's in the registry. Don't do it yourself. It's a 2 minute job. Take it to someone who knpws their stuff. It can be tricky. When you get it back, get rid of IE and use Mozilla, it's safer. GL

I agree ,

doesnt this fall into some law that prohibits this shit,

i remember years ago when microsoft was taking a big hit on only allowing IE on their windows software, and not allowing Netscape to be an option. I think that if they "manipulated" your browser in a way that the average Joe cannot change the home page, that this may fall in lines of the same thing.

BTW jack still taking down a few drinks to wash that lose away.

i told ya watch out this year my chargers are on terror.

i was routing against the ravens, i need more loses so that they are seeded lower than the chargers , playoff time.

trust me with D's such as they are the chargers and ravens make playoffs. i just want home feild, or at least a bye.

sorry to hijack.

this won't correct your problem, but EVERYONE should download this (click DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION) and run it. It cleans out all junk files and stuff that you never use. Very handy and it will increase the size of your available space. On download.com, it has been downloaded over 18 million times. I have had it on my laptop for over 2 years now, nice program and ad-ware and spyware free.
