mets

I like the Mets to take this pivitol Game 5 tonight against the Cardinals. Last night's game got pushed back to tonight due to the inclement weather. However, that's a break for the Mets as now tonight, Tom Glavine gets to pitch on his normal four days rest. He'll pitch well and the Mets to get the job done tonight.

Glavine was solid down the stretch of the regular season and has only been better in the postseason. The veteran of so many October games is 2-0 in the 2006 playoffs and has tossed 13 scoreless innings. He blanked the Cards over seven frames in Game 1 and he'll shut down the Cards again. The Mets are 12-5 when Glavine starts on the road this year, including an 8-3 win at Busch Stadium in May.

The Mets are brimming with confidence after Carlos Delgado, Carlos Beltran and the rest of New York lineup brought out the lumber in Sunday night's 12-5 win. This lineup produced six extra base hits in Game 4 as the Mets are being aggressive while also being patient and selective at the plate. They struggled versus Jeff Weaver in Game 1, but this after all, Jeff Weaver (1-3, 6.52 ERA in seven Busch Stadium starts this year) we're talking about. The Mets will solve Weaver this time around and score enough in support of Glavine.

This has been a good series, but make no mistake, the Mets are the better team. They have the better bullpen and now that the offense has awakened, New York is primed and ready to score this Game 5 victory.

The rainout last night was immensely helpful to both starting pitchers, as Tom Glavine and Jeff Weaver, who were slated to go on three days? rest on Monday night, now will be pitching on regular rest. That could be trouble for both of these offenses, because Glavine and Weaver were at the top of their games in Thursday?s series-opener at Shea Stadium.

Glavine pitched seven scoreless innings in that contest, scattering just four hits and two walks. Meanwhile, Weaver matched Glavine nearly pitch for pitch, making just one mistake to Carlos Beltran, who blasted a two-run homer for the game?s only runs.

Both Glavine and Weaver have made two starts in this postseason, and both have dominated. Glavine is working on a 13-inning scoreless streak, while Weaver has allowed only the home run to Beltran ? one of just six hits ? in 10 2/3 innings.

Another benefit of Monday?s rainout: Both bullpens will be fresh in this game. New York sports the best corps of relievers in baseball (3.31 bullpen ERA), while the Cardinals? relievers were virtually unhittable in the St. Louis? first seven playoff games before getting roughed up a bit in Sunday?s loss to the Mets.

I know with names like Pujols and Delgado and Rolen and Edmonds and Beltran and Wright swinging the lumber, playing an under might seem a little dicey. But we all know the mantra when it comes to postseason baseball: good pitching beats good hitting. And with both pitchers at full strength, both bullpens raring to go, and the field certain to be soggy from yesterday?s heavy rains, I envision a low-scoring, 3-2-like game tonight.

Play the Under!
