for throwing $100 million on a pitcher who has never won a game in the major leagues.....or throwing alot of money on a mediocre, at best outfielder (drew) ?

everybody is always ripping the yankees for outragious spending habits, but not one word on the red sox.

what's the story ?

you have a point AL, mike from the mike and the mad dog show, huge sports guys up here, is a huge yanks fan and said the same thing......but, me being a yankee hater and despiser, I'd say they still have 50-60 million more payroll than Boston does, and the Yankees are far, far more wasteful than Boston is (ie jared wright, brown, arod, farnsworth, shall I go on) that team has serious problems despite spending an assenine amount of money

I had the same rant in the baseball forum, MLB
is starting to gross me out. The money these guys
get vs their talent level and athleticism is off the
chart. Drew will be injured half the season and
the Japanese pitcher has never stepped foot in
a pressure cooker the size of Boston. What a
bunch of idiots running baseball these days.

I find the spending by the Red Sox to be a disgrace. A disgrace to baseball and the city, my city, that suports it. We have become worse than the Yankees. A complete and total disgrace. I hope they finish in 9th place and this guy never wins a game.

It's either going in the owners pockets or the players pockets. I don't personally care where it ends up all that much.

But the deals this season have been comical. (e.g. Gary Matthews Jr, Juan Pierre, Gil Meche).

Although lower ticket prices would be nice, most of the big money comes from recent TV/Radio/Internet deals anyway.

This entire offseason has set baseball back. I thought teams were finally learning after the A-Rod contract, but as noted above, this offseason's contracts have just been horrendous. When I heard about the Gary Matthews deal, I just about shit my pants... but then I heard about the Drew deal... and then the Meche deal.... and then the Lilly deal. Pretty sad. Now any run-of-the-mill player is going to be expecting 8 figures.

i think he may wind up on the yankees because of pettite.

Clemens left the Red Sox because he wanted to be closer to his family in Texas. So he signed with Toronto! Lying ba$tard.

Just add a couple of more bucks onto the cost of a ticket. No problem.

dont' get me wrong it is a disgusting amount of money for a japanese pitcher who traditionally dont' do well over here and has not pitched one game in MLB. It just goes to prove how baseball is played. Pitching wins and teams have to gamble big time. there is nobody really out there, and the zito types are going to demand even more. This is also an international deal as well, so the $$ can semi be justified. When the yanks signed matsui they more than made up for his deal with japenese business. remember jap tv stations pay a fortune for their home grown talent to be seen on tv.

can anyone answer this question? If the sox had to pay xx amound of dollars just to talk to this guy, why can the sox can a refund if he doesn't sign? the sox gets his rights for a year, so isn't the japan pitcher not making out on this deal. If i were the sox i would of claimed him and not signed him just so he would not go to the yanks. What is the use fro these japan players making team pay so much money just to negotiate for the rights to talk if they can just get a refund if they dont' sign him?

Because he's still under contract with the team in Japan, isn't a real free agent until next season (given he pitched a certain amount of innings) Smart move for the Japanese teams to cash in before he could walk away for free.

The Yankees are always the ones scrutinized because they are the trend setters. Year in and year out they have the highest team salary. If they ever decide to not try to buy championships then maybe the pressure will be let off a little.

believe it or not, the Japanese pitcher signing was a incredible deal. Jason Schmidt signed for 17 million per season, Gil Meche signed with Kansas City for like 15 million plus per season.

Japanese pitcher was 3-0, with a 1.38 Era in the world baseball classic, and was the MVP. He throws 6 pitches and tops out at 96mph. He is 26 years old and the Sox got him for 6 years at 52 million, or 8 + million per season. That is a incredible deal. You're getting twice the pitcher as Schmidt for half the money.

Drew signing is a different story

Comparatively, I think the Sox did well with that signing...every scout I've seen says he is the real deal, he is 26 and just entering his pitching prime, the Japanese angle will make money for the team, and the $51 million in rights fees does not count towards their salary numbers for revenue sharing and other purposes. So, in that regard, he is far more worth it than other guys this season.

Seems like a good gamble, as it does put them in prime position to compete again this season.

That all being said, the salaries being thrown out right now I think will ultimately put MLB in a bad situation down the road. And the smaller market teams still can't compete on a real fair assessment, unlike the NFL and NBA, for that matter.

The Sox are now huge in the Japanese market, and will make a boatload of oversea money on this signing. It was a good deal on a good prospect.

as big of a yankee fan as anyone this is not just a game anymore, it has been a business for some time now. the yankees are very good at what they do, they win(27 rings, i think) , they have their own tv station(YES), they have the highest road attentance for many years now and i can go on. the bottom line is the red sox did a smart thing. they will now have what the yankees have in the japanese media. they will capture a whole new market which over time will pay for almost his whole contract. matsui does that for the yankees, ichiro in seattle is another. the red sox would have got their 51 million back anyway and they this kid wanted to play in the states very bad so it is a win win. now they just have to hope he turns out like matsui and ichiro and not like hideki irabu.
hope this made sense
