TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey Nets star Jason Kidd filed for divorce from his wife of 10 years Tuesday, accusing her of "extreme cruelty" throughout their marriage.

In the dissolution papers, filed in state Superior Court in Bergen County, Kidd accuses Joumana Kidd of physically and mentally abusing him, threatening to make false domestic violence complaints against him to police, and of interfering with his relationship with his children.

"The defendant's extreme and unwarranted jealousy and rage has left the plaintiff concerned about her emotional stability," the papers say.

The divorce filing came less than a day after the 33-year-old NBA player filed a domestic violence complaint seeking a temporary restraining order against his wife.

"Jason Kidd filed for divorce from his wife today on the grounds of extreme cruelty over a long period of time," Kidd's attorney, Madeline Marzano-Lesnevich, said in a statement Tuesday.

Kidd scored 10 points Tuesday night as the Nets beat the Toronto Raptors 101-86.

"I can't talk about my personal stuff," he said afterward. "I hope you guys will respect this tough situation my family is going through and that we can resolve this as quickly as possible.

"There is really no distraction," Kidd said. "This is my job."

His complaint, however, paints a detailed portrait of Joumana Kidd as a vitriolic, jealous and paranoid wife prone to public outbursts and threats, including during a recent Nets game.

According to the complaint, Joumana Kidd used the couple's 8-year-old son on Dec. 27 to sneak into the Nets locker room and rummage through Jason Kidd's locker to find his cell phone. After looking up the names and numbers on it, the complaint said she left her son behind as she went upstairs to take a front row seat, where she shouted insults at Kidd throughout the game.

The papers accuse Joumana Kidd of kicking, hitting, punching and throwing household objects at her husband as she became "increasingly controlling and manipulative" in the last few years of their union.

According to Kidd, his wife had tracking devices installed on his cars and computers and has harassed his trainer, friends and family.

The Kidds were married in 1997 and live in Saddle River. They were involved in a domestic violence matter six years ago when he was playing for the Phoenix Suns.

In that incident, Jason Kidd was arrested in January 2001 after his wife told police he hit her during an argument over their son, Trey Jason (T.J.), who was 2 at the time. Kidd pleaded guilty to spousal abuse, was fined $200 and ordered to take anger management training.

Besides 8-year-old T.J., the Kidds have 4-year-old twin daughters, Miah and Jazelle.

Despite the numerous accusations by Kidd in the complaint, he did not ask for sole custody of the children.

"It is in the best interest that the parties share physically and legal custody of the children," the complaint said.

Kidd will make more than $18 million this season.

The Kidds' home phone number is unlisted. An after-hours message left for Joumana Kidd's lawyer was not immediately returned.

Attorney for Kidd's wife counters abuse

According to a report published Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2007, Kidd has accused his wife of 10 years, Joumana Kidd, of mistreating their three children. TRENTON, N.J. -- A day after Jason Kidd claimed in divorce papers to be a victim of spousal abuse, his wife's attorney said the New Jersey Nets point guard had no reason to fear the diminutive woman.

"He says he's threatened by her? He's a star athlete. She's 5-foot-2, I think, and 105 pounds," said celebrity New York divorce lawyer Raoul Felder, one of the attorneys representing Joumana Kidd.

"It's shameful what he did here. The truth will come out," said Felder on Wednesday, adding his client planned to file a counter compliant within a week.

The 33-year-old Kidd filed for divorce from his wife of 10 years Tuesday, a day after a court issued him a temporary restraining order against her.

In court papers, Kidd said his wife physically and mentally abused him, threatened to make false domestic violence complaints against him to police and interfered with his relationship with his children.

The papers accuse Joumana Kidd of kicking, hitting, punching and throwing household objects at her 6-foot-4, 210-pound husband as she became "increasingly controlling and manipulative" in the last few years of their marriage.

Monday night, Felder said police showed up at the couple's Saddle River estate and, instead of serving Joumana Kidd with the restraining order, forced her to leave.

"The police put her out of her own home, originally giving her 30 minutes to get out with the three children," Felder said. "It turns out the police misinterpreted the court's order."

Felder said Joumana Kidd's New Jersey attorney, Gary Newman, got a court order changing it Tuesday morning. "She stays in the house," Felder said. "If he wants to see the kids, he has to pick them up curbside, according to the order."

Calling her "a battered and harassed wife in every sense of the word," Felder said it was "absurd" to think that the former Budweiser model was the abuser in the relationship given Kidd's former domestic violence charge.

"He's going to have to deal with the real court and not the basketball court," Felder said.

The Kidds, married in 1997, were involved in a domestic violence matter six years ago when he played for the Phoenix Suns.

In that incident, Jason Kidd was arrested in January 2001 after Joumana told police he slapped her in the face during an argument about feeding their son, who is now 8. The couple also have 4-year-old twin daughters.

Kidd pleaded guilty to spousal abuse, was fined $200 and ordered to take anger-management training.

Kidd's complaint filed Tuesday, however, painted a detailed portrait of Joumana Kidd as a vitriolic, jealous and paranoid wife who suspected her husband was cheating and who was prone to public outbursts and threats.

"The defendant's extreme and unwarranted jealousy and rage has left the plaintiff concerned about her emotional stability," the papers say.

The papers accuse her of installing tracking devices on his cars and computers, of violent rages in public and in front of their children, and of harassing his trainer, friends and family

Im still afraid of her and i havent seen her in 12 years. That jealous shit is serious stuff. Wouldn't wish it on anyone. I wonder how many tires she slashed or windshields she smashed. Its tough hanging out with these type of girls when they know you are not gonna hit them.

Not sure who is at fault here but if she is one of these insecure jealous broads than his life is really gonna become hell. You can already see it with the lawyer she got. She will stop at nothing to get every cent she can. I would just roll over and give it to her and start a new life because these broads are dangerous. then again this still wont be enough for her if she is one of these jealous broads.

it is funny to me that this bitch loves living the life jason provides, but does everthing in her power to get in the way of the way he provides it. There was another article in the NJ paper about how j-kidd did not want to attend a mandatory meeting for all players. He just stared straigh ahead and said nothing. The Nets had to meet with a speaker who talked about saving money and how this wealth does not last forever. he then went on to say that 84% of atheletes go through a divorce/separation at some point in their career and/or after. Funny how they had this speaker the after he divorced his wife.
