Can you tell me what this means in terms I have a shot at understanding?

This is a disc disection at L5-S1. Large central and right paramedian disc herniation is seen. Causing impression on the thecal sac causing compression on S1 nerve root.

Large central and right side disc herniation at L5-S1

All I know for sure is this hurts like hell, what does it mean and how powerful of pain killers can I get for it?

I just picked up the MRI film and this was on the letter attached, can't get to the doctor for a few days so I am curious as to what all this means.

Thanks

You blew out a disc in your lower back. The disc is the spongy-like stuff in between your vertebrae on your spine. You did something to put pressure on that disc to push some of that disc material out onto a nerve that runs through a nerve canal. I believe it is the last disc on the lumbar part of your spine. Depending on how big the herniation is most likely surgery which I would do at last resort. I have gone through three surgeries in that area and had to have it finally fused. Pretty much pain free now with occasional muscle pain. I don't envy you right now at all.

good luck and you should get some strong meds-vicodin for sure

OUCH!

OUCH!

Feel sorry for you.............been there. I wouldn't recommend surgery until you have exhausted all treatment options. I had something very similar to this with disc degeneration. I would go once every couple of months to have cortisone shot into the vertebrates. It would feel good for awhile and then.......bang, it would go out for doing something like turning on the faucet of the shower in the a.m. It hurts like hell and made it difficult to breath, let alone accomplish much.

It really depends on your doctor as to what type of meds you receive.....Be Careful:nono: as they can be very addicting, and when you are on them long enough your body becomes naturally dependent. Make sure they don't give you pain meds with a ton of apap......especially if you drink. Can hurt your liver. Percocet is a good pain med, as well as Norco, Lorect, and Lortab. If your doctor is conservative he may only prescribe low level Vivadin, so you have to proactive.......and let them know what type of pain tolerance you have.

Physical Therapy helped me some, as well as the ole jacuzzi.....stretches, hot pad alternate with ice if inflammed. I would imagine that you will get something "good" for your pain......like I said, be careful. Good Luck if you go the surgery route, I never did as I would rather have pain than be unable to do things physical. Of course now-a-days the surgeries appear to be more successful, but check the credentials of the specialist that will do the suregery. I know what it feels like so hang in there!

kneif if you want to get rid of them i will glady take them off of your hands.

Penguin on another note you need anti inflammatory drugs not pain killers like Percs or Vicodin. You need those right when you first found out about it which means you are in tremendous pain. But down the road you need stuff to keep the disc from expanding and hitting the nerve like the other fellow said. I went thru this for about a year before i got what i felt were the right mixture of meds. there were some that just made me flat out sic. This is what i take when i feel this pain coming on. i take Diclofenac sod 50mg and Tramadol, hcl 50 mg. in the beginning i took them all the time but now i only take it when i need it. If you have any arthritis these will clear it up to. The side effects are minimal that is another story. It sucks and the best exercise i could recommend for you is laying on a bench press and doing reverse leg curls. Some days you will feel like you have no problems at all but i swear two days before rain the problems begin. Good luck

Thanks for all the good info guys.

STwoody, do you ever regret not getting suegery to fixi t.

I'll be honest, this hurts to the point of not really being able to work very well, I haven't missed a day of work over it yet, or ever in my life for that matter so I would hate losing several weeks over surgery.

Thanks

..........................................................

all of these type meds will make you nauseus unless you eat something .

Take some applesauce with it if you dont want to eat right away.

Cut the pill in half. Take one half with food and one half after you eat.

That should allow you to take them.

Wouldnt advise sending that in the mail.

had this same problem at the level above yours (L4/L5). I had surgery because my injury was lateral with free fragments which caused numbness in my foot and was leading to foot drop. If your pain is all in your lower back and you don't have the associated radiculopathy (pain/numbness etc. in your legs) then you don't have to rush right out and have surgery.

You might have success with epidural steroid injections at the local pain clinic, physical therapy might help a little, and you can also investigate the traction type treatments. The 2 I know about are Vax-D and Spine Med, and Spine Med is much better.

As far as pain meds go, you should be able to get a script for them without trouble, because you're going to hurt.

If you start to get foot drop, if the pain is so bad you can't sleep at night, or if you can't get comfortable in any position, you probably will need surgery.

I'm almost 7 years past mine, and my back still hurts at times, but it was nothing like when I had the acute injury.

Actually I have no pain in my back at all, it's all in my right leg, thought I pulled a hamstring muscle to be honest.

The pain is excruciating at times and at other times it's tolerable, but always there.

Advil in near lethal doses tends to help, but upsets my stomach to the point that I don't know which pain is worse.

that sucks!! I'm afraid if your back isn't hurting now, it will start soon. There are better meds than advil also. Try some celebrex if your doctor will give it to you.

One last thing. You'll have to be your own best advocate/voice. If you get sent for an ortho/neuro surgery consult, those guys are surgeons, and they cut for a living, and most will probably recommend surgical repair. You have to be aware of other options and try them if surgery is not what u want.

That's because the disc is more than likely pinching your Sciatica nerve. I herniated a disc in my lower back (Lumbar) area 6 years ago. I did physical therapy for 4 months (usually once a week) and other exercises recommended by the physical therapists on my own. The disc is still herniated but the physical therapy moved the Sciatica nerve away from the disc and I'm fine now.

I did nothing about it for almost a year but couldn't take the shooting pain going down my leg anymore and went in. Try physical therapy if your Dr recommends it. Believe me, you don't want back surgery!

Celebrex is the drug i had the worst time with. Maybe it was just me. I have also heard bad stories about that drug. The ones i was talking about may be the generic version. Its actually Ultram. Hey six what foot was giving you the problem? Mine is on the left side and sometimes i have a discomfort in my left testicle. this ever happen to you? Its a strange feeling. I never had the leg pain but its the foot that bothers me.

Sometimes the pain is so bad you will do anything to try to stop it. When i throw mine out which hasnt happen in three years im finished for about a week. Mine hasnt gone out because of educating myself on proper lifting techniques among other stuff. There isnt a time in my life where when i bend down im not thinking about my that horrible back pain appearing. It can come at anytime. I remember a time i just got done 20 minutes of strectching it out. I climb my steps and saw something on the floor. I went to get it and bang messed up for a week. Its not even lifting heavy stuff that gets me its stupid things like moving something with my foot.

sponge, never had any testicle pain. My right foot was the one that was giving me problems.

Ultram is for pain, and it is not an antiimflammatory. Just like taking a high powered Tylenol. Celebrex helps with the inflammation.
