The NBA will probably never be as good overall as it was in the 70's and 80's. There were plenty of blacks back then too, so it really doesn't seem to be a racial thing so much. ....Something got away from this TEAM game the last decade +, and it may have more to do with the consumer than anything. My recommendation is to treat it the way I do - don't watch, don't spend a cent on it. We have free will. Bad product should = don't buy.

I couldn't agree more ... I didn't mean my post that started this in a racial way. I just assumed it might be taken that way which is why I referenced Beantown. I agree that the 70's/80's NBA was way better. Growing up, I loved watching my Sixers with Cheeks, Toney, Erving, Dawkins, Moses, etc... go up against rivalries like the Celtics with Bird, Parrish, McHale, DJ and the Lakers with Jabbar, Magic, Worthy and even the Bucks with Marquis Johnson. I have barely been able to stomach watching the NBA since then even though there are many talented stars ... few of them know how to play the game properly which I guess is why we can't dominate in International play anymore ... or even finish first for that matter.

I like watching that darn Canadien hippie Steve Nash play about as much as anyone these days. He knows how to play the game and get his teammates involved in turn making everyone around him better ... which is why he has been MVP twice and superstar Kobe has not!

Yeah, I don't remember Kareem ever thumping his chest after a dunk when his team is trailing by 12 in the 4th quarter.

On a side note, I'm sure lots of people here saw that HBO special on UCLA and John Wooden. ....Now THAT was some team basketball.

Completely agree. I still remember watching the Sixers, Lakers, and Celtics in the early and mid 80's and that was, without a doubt, the best basketball I've ever seen. On another note... I think the 3 point shot has killed the game as well. Remember back when there was no 3 point shot and the games were routinely played in the 110's and 120's? High percentage shots don't exist anymore. It's all about jacking up as many 3's as you possibly can.

On a completely unrelated note... WOW... there's a Cal Poly avatar now??? Did you go to Poly smurphy? I lived in San Luis Obispo for about 12 or 13 years. Didn't go to Poly but went to Cuesta before I transferred up to Seattle to finish up at UW. I'd be amazed if there was a fellow SLO resident on these boards!

Yes - graduated in 1993. Finally decided to pimp the logo on here. Something about the VT incident spurred some school pride, especially since Poly is kind of a sister school to VT and I have so many family connections in the Blacksburg area. And I keep getting news of old profs who keep dying - it's all making me get kinda sentimental ....Plus, we damned near made the tourney this year! I remember Cuesta very well - had to go there for something and of course knew people who made their way to Poly from there.

Living part time in SB these days, so I'm still at least sort of on the Central Coast. ...I wouldn't be at all surprised if there aren't a couple more SLO people lurking around MJ's.

Very nice. SB is one of my favorite places on the planet. Is State Street still 6,000 miles long? :mj07: I haven't been there in years but I had a few buddies that went to UCSB so I used to visit quite frequently. I would be lying if I said I remember most of our nights out in Isla Vista. Good stuff. It sounds like you graduated from Poly the year I graduated from SLOHS. A couple of my teammates went on to play for Poly after high school. Of course the school was still kind of a doormat back then. :142smilie

Anyway, nice to see a fellow Central Coaster on these boards. Well, I guess I'm a former Central Coaster. But cool nonetheless!

No, its not a total racial thing. But I think race is a part of it. Most sports are best when there is a blend. Its fun to watch an all-white team in the NCAA tourney. It used to be fun to watch an all-black small college team in the tourney....b/c basically what I'm saying is you can get a style that a heavy favorite isn't used to.

I think a lot of teams/players just don't know how to use the 3-pt shot. Its not close enough in the NBA to make it a big part of your offense, but teams do it anyway.

Also, with regard to race, it may just be a stereotype...but you've got a very "black" game. Its almost all 1-on-1. You have selfish players who aren't very smart and are lazy a lot of times.

They grab, hold, take extra steps, etc. and basically the rules are changed rather than enforced.

I agree I don't have to watch...and rarely do. But it sucks to not be able to watch NBA. Its like having your dad die I guess.

I agree about the 1 on 1 aspect and basketball being a more selfish game now. I honestly think there are a lot of players who are more concerned with looking good and showing up other players than they are winning. And it's not just basketball... how about football? How many times do you see a corner or safety give up a 15 or 20 yard completion but then celebrate like they just scored a TD just because they put a good hit on the receiver. Yeah, it's all about style points for some of these idiots.

Yeah, its definitely not just basketball and its also not just "black sports".

Its just that there is a certain mentality to sports today and it just seems like younger blacks have brought it in and everyone else has adopted it.

Whatever it is, its terrible.

Like I said before, I think part of it is hip hop culture. God, I'm really starting to sound old aren't I??? But I do think that's at least part of it. You know, make as much money as you can, buy the most expensive cars, the most expensive houses, etc... it's all about personal excess and it's all about "getting yours." Forget winning championships, get that $80 million dollar shoe deal and make sure you get those 22's for your new Bentley. That's what's important! :mj07: I'm not saying living in excess didn't exist for pro athletes back in the day, but I don't think it was as glorified as it is now.

Then throw in shows like SportsCenter that celebrate dunks and individual plays on the basketball court and there's really no incentive for kids coming up to even WANT to play ball the right away.

That GS/DALLAS game was absolutly horrific! I had GS but I know people who had dallas and clearly saw the same things I saw. GS Should of covered that game AND EVEN AFTER being GIVEN DOUBLE The FT'S that GS was given. GS STILL ONLY LOST BY 12..

DWAYNE WADE Said it himself the other night. "Last Year I wasn't at my best before the finals, but the finals was when i was at my best. Same thing will be this year I WON'T BE AT MY BEST FOR TONIGHTS GAME BUT I WILL BE WHEN IT COUNTS"

WTF IS THAT?? WHEN IT COUNTS?? ITS' THE PLAYOFFS THEY COUNT NOW!!!!!

could be off a word or two but thats basically what he said

Why i have no idea but this Maverick team is not that good and when they win everyone is always complaining to officials. I said it last year and you are already again seeing it this year. This team can't stay on the floor with the Suns unless the Suns are in foul trouble. Im not saying they are a bad team im saying they are overratted. This golden State team will give them all they can handle and the refs will screw them time and time again.

The thing is, the league is EXTREMELY STUPID...

Now, whether that reason is due to the fact that its mostly black is up for debate. But, overall, its just a very dumb league.

I just saw a 3-on-1 fast break and all the guy had to do was make a simple pass for a layup. 2 points. But, no....he threw a stupid alley-oop which was contested and no points.

I see players go for 3's when down by 3 with plenty of time and then go for the quick layup down by 6 with little time. Its like they want to look smart, but have no clue what to do. Its like watching primates at times.

Its just amazing. Most players want to make the fancy pass no matter what and then at the end of a game, they want to play it smart but they have no idea how to...
They will shoot a desperation 3 when they don't have to and then the announcers will say how smart they are to get the "quick 2" when in fact they do need a 3. Down 5 with 10 seconds to go....its too late to get the quick 3 and hope they miss a FT....

I'll watch the playoffs, but overall this league is terrible.

I can't ever remember Jabbar, Maurice Lucas, Mark Eaton, Olajawon, or any of the old centers taking a charge when a midget like Iverson drives the lane. Guys like Bill Lambeer would knock the crap out of them for coming in the lane. What is with the big men these days taking charges! Pussies!

Agreed. You want to know what my new favorite is? Ok, I'm sure you've seen this a million times before, but it seems like it just started happening the last few years. Let's say there's 15 or 20 seconds left at the end of a quarter/half. Coach calls timeout and, we would assume, draws up a play. But what actually happens after the timeout? I wonder if you can guess this without me saying it... :mj07: Anyway, it never fails... a guard gets the ball (Iverson, Lebron, etc.) and all they do is dribble about 25 feet from the hoop, wait till the clock gets down to 1 or 2 seconds, then hoist up a 3. GREAT play call! I find it very hard to believe that the coach in the huddle is saying, "Ok Allen, I want you to get the inbounds and then dribble until the clock gets down to 1 and then shoot a 25 footer with a hand in your face, because the defender knows the clock is about to run out and you have to shoot!" Yep, that's my "the apocalypse is clearly upon us in the NBA" example. :142smilie
