Two short blurbs from the Ecologist April 07 issue:

LIGHTS OUT DOWN UNDER

Australia is to ban incandescent lightbulbs, which are five times less efficient than the newest eco-friendly models. The move will cut Australia's CO2 emissions by some 800,000 tonnes a year.

EU Commissioner Stavros Dimas says the EU is 'currently looking into whether an EU standard for environment friendly light bulbs is doable.' A recent report by the International Energy Agency estimated that replacing the world's light bulbs with energy efficient varieties could reduce the global electricity by one-tenth.

AND

GREENPEACE CREATE A 'GREEN-LIGHT DISTRICT'

Greenpeace activists in Holland have created a 'green-light district' in the middle of Amsterdam's famous red-light district. By replacing red lamps with energy-saving bulbs, the group hopes to draw attention to the 'simple things we can do to tackle climate change.'

I find this ban to be ridiculous. First of all fluorescent lights DO NOT have the same quality as incandescent. They just can't replicate the same comfortable feel (for me).

Secondly, I hate the government explicitly telling me, what I can and cannot use in the privacy of my own home. It is a bit too forceful.

Thirdly, it is an attack on the little guy. Rich people and big business will find ways around it. Their will be exceptions for certain large wattage bulbs etc etc.

Finally, if we are going to try to legislate power consuming behavior, it should be in the form of taxes only. In other words, tax electricity at an even rate. I use very little electricity (monthly power bill of around $25), so I am not part of the problem, yet I still have to change my ways?
I don't drive a car etc etc.

If the government is going to try to control how much energy we use, come up with a comprehensive plan, not some token gesture.

California is strongly considering this, and I think it is a horrible idea.

oh, Canada...

This makes about as much sense as their stupid gun control laws. I love Canada, but I'm glad I live in the USA.
