"the bunker"
looked like around 5 spans........whew.....

who hasn`t thought about this possibility when going over a large bridge at one time or another?......

some info...

%u2022 Structure ID: NBI: 9340.
%u2022 Location: River Mile 853.20.
%u2022 River Elevation: 725 Feet.
%u2022 Highway: I-35W.
%u2022 Daily Traffic Count: 140,000 (2002).
%u2022 Bridge Type: Steel Arch Deck Truss Bridge.
%u2022 Length: 1,907 Feet, 458 Foot Longest Span.
%u2022 Width: 8 Traffic Lanes, 108 Feet.
%u2022 Navigation Channel Width: 390 Feet.
%u2022 Height Above Water: 64 Feet.
%u2022 Date Built: Opened November 1967.
Claim to fame: was built with a single 458 foot long steel arch to avoid putting any piers in the water to impede river navigation.

This bridge features an anti-ice system. A series of PVC pipes carries a deicer fluid to outlets that are drilled into the deck of the bridge. When the temperature for ice is right, the deicer fluid is pumped onto the bridge deck. This system has proven to be successful enough that it is being installed on other bridges in Minnesota.

Guys, this is a very sobering night for us up here. This bridge cuts right through the heart of the Twin Cities, connecting the two, the University is right by the bridge. I work far north and west of here, but was driving home from work when the story broke. I can't describe the chilling feeling, and then to listen to it and now to watch it, it really hits hard. The scary part is, we have no real idea who could have been on that bridge, or under it, or anything like that. You just can't know right now. People going home, to and from college, major business all around, coming in to head to the Dome. And now it's just a sickening mess.

All I can really say right now. Pretty sick to my stomach.

I have driven over that bridge hundreds and hundreds of times. I confirmed that my Mom is OK, and I've tried calling some friends on their cells that live in that area, but the lines are down. Heard from a couple via text message, though. Just terrible.

All my relatives in the Twin Cities area are safe and accounted for; still waiting to hear from/contact a few friends...
My cousin travels that bridge for work; lucky for her that her work day ends at 4 PM so she had passed over it well before it came down. She was still quite shook up when I spoke to her on the phone last night---terrible tragedy, to say the least.
