The W or Fairmont in Santa Monica.
I can't afford those anymore- so the alternatives are:
SD- hook up w/my buddies that own Sol Surf in Mission Beach and crashing @ their pad for free. WARNING: they may steal your camcorder to film their surfing shennanigans when you walk down to the late night burrito shop @ 4 am.
LA/Santa Monica- Sleep on the beach w/the homeless masses- they are very tolerant there.
