Carolina at New Orleans:

NO -3:shrug:
44

New Orleans begins the task of digging out from an 0-3 hole Sunday when they host Carolina in an NFC South battle. They will do it without Deuce McAllister and with questions about whether Reggie Bush is the man for fulltime work.

Oddsmakers currently have the Saints listed as 3-point favorites versus the Panthers, while the game's total is sitting at 45.

The Panthers lost to Tampa Bay 20-7 as a 3-point favorite in Week 4. The combined score fell UNDER the posted over/under total (39).

David Carr completed 19-of-41 passes for 155 yards with a touchdown and an interception and DeAngelo Williams caught three passes for 37 yards with a touchdown.

The Saints lost 31-14 to the Titans in Week 3, as 4.5-point favorites at the Superdome. The combined 46 points fell just UNDER the posted total of 46.5.

Drew Brees threw for 225 yards and completed 29-of-45 pass attempts, while tossing four interceptions in the loss. Reggie Bush carried the ball seven times and ran in for two touchdowns.

Current streak:
New Orleans has lost 3 straight games.

New Orleans most recently:

Delhomme out, Carr in. Head coach John Fox has his work cut out for him. DT Kris Jenkins says his team has "no heart." The QB situation remains unstable. WR Steve Smith is upset with the offensive coaches. DE Julius Peppers is unproductive. Other than that, everything's fine. Now that Deuce McAllister is out for the season with a torn left ACL, the question in the Big Easy is whether Reggie Bush can be an every-down back. If he isn't ... well, ex-Saint Ricky Williams just applied for reinstatement.

What the hell was that? Supposedly weak KC goes to San Diego and blast the Chargers to move to 2-2. Jacksonville had better pay attention even if they are coming off a bye and favored on the road.

Oddsmakers currently have the Jaguars listed as 1-point favorites versus the Chiefs, while the game's total is sitting at 34?.

The Jaguars defeated Denver 23-14 as a 3-point underdog in Week 3. The combined score went OVER the posted over/under total (36).

David Garrard completed 11-of-17 passes for 133 yards with a touchdown, while Fred Taylor rushed for 79 yards on 14 carries.

The Chiefs upset San Diego 30-16 as a 12.5-point underdog in Week 4. The combined score went OVER the posted over/under total (38.5).

Dwayne Bowe caught eight passes for 164 yards and a touchdown for Kansas City, while Damon Huard completed 17-of-29 passes for 284 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Current streak:
Jacksonville has won 2 straight games.
Kansas City has won 2 straight games.

RB Larry Johnson finally busted out for his first 100-yard game of the season in the win at San Diego. But he has yet to reach the end zone this season after scoring 40 TDs the previous two years. The Jags are 1-3 following bye weeks since Jack Del Rio became the head coach. That doesn't bode well for this week's game at Kansas City ... other than the fact that it's against a team that has scored just 56 points in four games.

Like the Jags but too many things against them here.

One more thing from my 'sharp' regarding bye weeks.

NFL ATS Records After a Bye Week

A lot of recreational sports bettors believe that a team coming off a bye week has an advantage. The handicapping theory is that team is playing on two weeks rest, so the team can use the extra week to heal bumps and bruises and also have the extra week to plan for the upcoming opponent.

There are two things wrong with using this as a flat betting system. The first would be momentum. The team may have just put together a winning streak and are running on all cylinders. With the off week, the odds are that they will lose some of their timing and their competitive edge. The second reason would be the lines-maker. If anything because of the public's misconception of the "coming off a bye week" advantage the lines-maker would shade the lines against the bye team.

Below we have listed the against the spread records of each NFL team in their game after the break.

Detroit at Washington:

It's hard to imagine the Redskins not devising a plan during their bye week to score on the Lions weak defense. But did they devise a plan to stop the explosive Detroit offense?

Oddsmakers currently have the Redskins listed as 4?-point favorites versus the Lions, while the game's total is sitting at 45.

The Lions defeated Chicago 37-27 as a 2.5-point underdog in Week 4. The combined score went OVER the posted over/under total (46).

Jon Kitna threw for 247 yards with two touchdowns for Detroit, while Troy Walters and Shaun McDonald each caught a touchdown in the win.

The Redskins lost to the Giants 24-17 as a 3.5-point underdog in Week 3. The combined score fell UNDER the posted over/under total (42.5).

Jason Campbell completed 16-of-34 passes for 190 yards with a touchdown and Clinton Portis rushed for 60 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.

Veteran WR Keenan McCardell, who just signed, should be able to offer help quickly. He knows Joe Gibbs' system, having been drafted by the Redskins in 1991. The Redskins might need him this week depending on the injury to Santana Moss. Is head coach Rod Marinelli letting the 3-1 start get to his head? He told the Detroit Free Press that his Lions are on their way to being "an elite team." Might want to play another elite team first -- the Lions' first four opponents are a combined 5-11.

Wrong team favored here..

Atlanta Falcons at Tennessee:

Tennessee has been a cover machine (10-1 ATS) of late, but they face a 9-point hole against the Falcons this week. The Titans (who are 3-0 vs. Atlanta since 1996) are rested, while the Falcons got an uplifting win to break an 0-3 start.

Oddsmakers currently have the Titans listed as 9-point favorites versus the Falcons, while the game's total is sitting at 39?.

The Falcons defeated Houston 26-16 as a 2.5-point underdog in Week 4. The combined score went OVER the posted over/under total (39.5).

Joey Harrington passed for 223 yards and a pair of touchdowns for Atlanta, while Michael Jenkins caught six passes for 64 yards with two touchdowns in the win.

Vince Young tossed two touchdown passes last time out, as the Titans downed the Saints 31-14 at the Superdome. The combined 46 points fell just UNDER the posted total of 46.5.

Young completed 14-of-22 pass attempts for 164 yards for the Titans. Brandon Jones caught four passes for 73 yards and a touchdown in the win.

Vince Young is STILL upset about losing the Heisman Trophy to Reggie Bush. But maybe that's the best thing ever to happen to the Titans' QB, since it gives him plenty of competitive fuel. Unfortunately for Young, he can't play the Saints every week. Safe to say that after leading the NFL in rushing yards the past three years, the Falcons will not extend that streak to a fourth year. Without Michael Vick, they've yet to break the 100-yard mark this season.

Miami at Houston:

Miami has actually played better on the road, although their 0-4 mark belies that fact. A week after they were scorched by castoff Daunte Culpepper, they visit a Houston team that may be coming to some nasty realizations after a 2-0 start.

Oddsmakers currently have the Texans listed as 5?-point favorites versus the Dolphins, while the game's total is sitting at 42.

The Dolphins lost to Oakland 35-17 as a 3.5-point favorite in Week 4. The combined score went OVER the posted over/under total (40).

Trent Green completed 14-of-25 passes for 158 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions for Miami and Ronnie Brown rushed for 134 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.

The Texans lost to Atlanta 26-16 as a 2.5-point favorite in Week 4. The combined score went OVER the posted over/under total (39.5).

Matt Schaub completed 28-of-40 passes for 317 yards with a touchdown in the loss, while Andre Davis caught five passes for 117 yards with a touchdown.

Current streak:

We love it when players weave in the lexicon of the Internet when discussing their teams. Following the loss to Oakland, Jason Taylor told the Miami Herald: "You can Google all the negative emotions and they're all there for me." There were so many players accepting blame for the Texans' surprising loss to Atlanta that an apology intervention was needed in the locker room. Don't these guys know it's a lot more fun for us when they point fingers and blame others when things go bad?

Pittsburgh lost their first game of the season in Week 4 while Seattle was proving they are a legit force in the NFC with a win. Does this equate to an OVER play in Pitt Sunday, where 16 of the past 21 games have played OVER?

Oddsmakers currently have the Steelers listed as 6-point favorites versus the Seahawks, while the game's total is sitting at 39.

The Seahawks defeated San Francisco 23-3 as a 1.5-point favorite in Week 4. The combined score fell UNDER the posted over/under total (40.5).

Matt Hasselbeck threw for 281 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for Seattle, while Deion Branch caught seven passes for 130 yards in the win.

The Steelers lost to Arizona 21-14 as a 5.5-point favorite in Week 4. The combined score fell UNDER the posted over/under total (42.5).

RB Willie Parker may be one of the NFL's top backs, but he has a tendency to disappear at times. In his 35 starts for the Steelers, he has been held under 40 yards on six occasions -- including the 37-yard performance in the loss at Arizona. The Seahawks need to get more out of RB Shaun Alexander in the first half. Of Alexander's 353 rushing yards this season, just 94 have come in the first half. Mike Holmgren blames assignment errors for most of the problems.

The Browns defeated Baltimore 27-13 as a 4-point underdog in Week 4. The combined score caused this game to be a PUSH on the posted over/under total (40).

Derek Anderson threw for 204 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for Cleveland, while Braylon Edwards caught three passes for 97 yards with a touchdown.

Tom Brady threw three touchdowns passes in Week 4, as the CHEATERS defeated the Bengals 34-13. The CHEATERS covered the 8.5-point spread, and the combined 47 points were UNDER the posted total of 54.5.

How consistent has the CHEATERS offense been this season? They've scored in every one of their 16 quarters. In fact, the CHEATS have put up points in their last 36 quarters dating back to last season. CHEATERS! Last season, the Browns scored 24 or more points just three times. This season, they've already matched that total in the first month. Derek Anderson's QB rating (88.4) is better than those of Vince Young, Jay Cutler, Eli Manning and Philip Rivers.

Kurt Warner continues to steal minutes from Matt Leinart. You might care in your fantasy league but Cardinal backers don't care so long as they pocket money. The Cards are 5-0-1 ATS past 6 on the road and visit the winless and woeful Rams Sunday.

The Cardinals defeated Pittsburgh 21-14 as a 5.5-point favorite in Week 4. The combined score fell UNDER the posted over/under total (42.5).

Edgerrin James rushed for 77 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries for Arizona and Kurt Warner completed 14-of-21 passes for 132 yards with a touchdown.

The Rams lost to Dallas 35-7 as a 13-point underdog in Week 4. The combined score fell UNDER the posted over/under total (47).

Marc Bulger struggled for St. Louis, completing 11-of-24 passes for 114 yards with an interception, while Torry Holt caught five passes for 52 yards.

Should've seen the upset of the Steelers coming. After all, Ken Whisenhunt and his staff probably know the Pittsburgh playbook almost as well as the Steelers do. It certainly seemed that way on defense, as the Cards shut down Pittsburgh's ground game. It's almost inconceivable to think the Rams' offense has gone 31 possessions without scoring a TD. Marc Bulger was pulled in favor of Gus Frerotte in the loss to Dallas, but the troubles go beyond the QB position -- like injuries to the O-line.

Ari -3.5 (is this a trap line??? Has to be!) Not falling for it yet, want to watch the percentages. Maybe a Rams ML.

New York Jets at New York Giants:

So who's home game is this anyway? New York's team face off Sunday but they come off very different Week 4 performances. The Jets lost at Buffalo, while the Giants mauled an undermanned Eagles offensive line for 12 sacks.

Oddsmakers currently have the Giants listed as 3?-point favorites versus the Jets, while the game's total is sitting at 41?.

The Jets lost to Buffalo 17-14 as a 3-point favorite in Week 4. The combined score fell UNDER the posted over/under total (37.5).

Chad Pennington completed 32-of-39 passes for 290 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions for New York, while Laveranues Coles had eight receptions for 65 yards and a touchdown.

The Giants defeated Philadelphia 16-3 as a 3.5-point favorite in Week 4. The combined score fell UNDER the posted over/under total (47).

Eli Manning threw for 135 yards with a touchdown and an interception for New York and Plaxico Burress caught four passes for 24 yards and a touchdown in the win.

Current streak:

One of the quirky things about the Giants' 12 sacks against the Eagles is that Michael Strahan had only one. But that one allowed him to surpass Lawrence Taylor as the team's career sack king. The Jets have to figure out a way to put more pressure on the quarterback. New York has only three sacks this season, lowest total in the AFC. Only Carolina (2) and New Orleans (0) have fewer sacks in the league.

Over 41 $33/30

Tampa Bay at Indianapolis:

The Colts are developing an air of invincibility after their Week 4 bucking of the Broncos. Can they buck the Bucs this week at home? Tampa is a surprising 3-1 and has allowed just 24 points in the past three games.

Oddsmakers currently have the Colts listed as 11-point favorites versus the Buccaneers, while the game's total is sitting at 46?.

The Buccaneers defeated Carolina 20-7 as a 3-point underdog in Week 4. The combined score fell UNDER the posted over/under total (39).

Jeff Garcia threw for 176 yards and ran in for a touchdown for Tampa Bay, while Earnest Graham rushed for 48 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.

The Colts defeated Denver 38-20 as a 10-point favorite in Week 4. The combined score went OVER the posted over/under total (46.5).

Peyton Manning threw for 193 yards with three touchdown passes and also ran in for score for Indianapolis, while Joseph Addai rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.

The Colts could be facing some severe injury problems Sunday against Tampa Bay. WR Marvin Harrison, RB Joseph Addai, S Bob Sanders, TE Ben Utecht and LB Rob Morris are all banged up. Fortunately for Indy, the Bucs have injury problems of their own. The Bucs are 3-1, but can they overcome the season-ending injuries to RB Cadillac Williams and OT Luke Petitgout? Losing the veteran Petitgout might be the more damaging blow. Second-year pro Donald Penn takes over the LT role.

PASS

This looks like a good spot for Tampa, and they are worthy of a play. But I don't go against my boys so GL if you do!
