1988: Piper Alpha oil rig ablaze

A fire on a North Sea oil rig is feared to have claimed the lives of most of those on board.

The fire is believed to have started after explosions at about 2230 BST (2130 GMT) on the Piper Alpha drilling platform, 120 miles (193km) off the north-east coast of Scotland. Some guy named Mike, was reported to have been smoking in the womans rest room.:142smilie

Helicopters and boats were immediately sent out to rescue the oil workers in an operation co-ordinated by the Aberdeen coastguard.

Pilots reported seeing an "inferno" up to 350ft (107m) high and a platform wrenched apart.

It is thought approximately 225 men were working on the rig owned by Occidental Oil.

Safety inspection

Survivors are being airlifted to the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary - some are said to be seriously injured.

Most of those who have been rescued so far said they survived by sliding down pipes or jumping hundreds of feet into the sea which was covered in burning oil. sounds like disneyland:142smilie
The Piper Alpha platform is the largest and oldest platform in the North Sea oilfield.

It was last inspected two weeks ago but last week there was a small fire on the rig.

Since drilling began in the North Sea in the 1970s there have been 300 deaths on Britain's 123 oil installations, often in accidents caused by bad weather.

Can we pay your 70 K , please come and help us in this work. :142smilie

Mike - why do I have to wear these harness things ?

Super- Because if the drill grabs your clothing it will push you down into the hole. Without the harness we would have no other way to pull you up, and nothing to bury.

Mike - when will I get my first check ?

In 30 days, that is if you carry your load

Only way off this rig is by helicoptor or swimming. There aint no hellicoptors and swimming is not fun out here

A company I worked for had its headquarters in King of Prussia. So I have been to Philly many times. I found the people there to be extremely bright, well spoken, with good attitudes and family values.

Then I took a side trip to Long Island. There I found rudeness, idiots, trash all over, cold, complaining, foul mouth losers. I found New York to be the dirtiest city I ever went to.

Get my drift.

Your pretty sharp because I only mentioned what I do one time and that was years ago in a jobs thread. Nice memory.

your just stupid

today I was sitting at a redlight at a four lane intersection when a black man with a white cane was stumbling in front of me to cross the street.

he must have heard the bus coming on the other side of the busy road and he was trying not to have to wait the additional 30 minutes for the next one.

I was the first one at the light, and the light turned green.

I put my truck in park, left it running, got out and caught up to him , and walked the guy across the street, yelling at the bus driver to wait, which he did.

No one that was behind my truck attempted to pass my truck or honk their horn at me. All the other cars saw what was going on and stopped until he was safely on the bus.

In New York. People would more than likely ignored him, watched to see if he was killed, or
maybe put a side bet on him reaching the curb
without falling.

NY - what was the last nice thing you did for another human being ?

just saying

.

There is nothing wrong w/ adults going back to school to further their education.

I didnt get my Master's till I was 32.

I dont care if you are 50, their is nothing wrong w/ being an adult student be it for GED, BA, whatever....
