Mother Earth is pregnant for the third time
For y'all have knocked her up.
I have tasted the maggots in the mind of the universe.
I was not offended.
For I knew I had to rise above it all
Or drown in my own shit.

(Funkadelic, Maggot Brain, 1971)

F

*Free - I'm a Mover (2:56)...one of the better songs from this solid, short-lived outfit; guitarist Paul Kossof plays some killer rock/blus while lead singer Paul Rogers later went on to Bad Company and the Firm; All Right Now, Fire & Water and Songs of Yesterday are some more worthwhile tracks from these guys; live tracks Mr. Big and The Worm are also cool

*Fleetwood Mac - Don't Stop (3:11)...off their biggest disc, Rumours, this track contains an ideal motto for us gambling types who may be coming off of some bad beats...

Don't stop thinkin' about tomorrow
Don't stop. It'll soon be here
It'll be here, better than before
Yesterday's gone...yesterday's gone.

g12306mucdt.jpg

Flower Kings - Last Minute on Earth (11:51)...sounding sorta like the Screaming Trees or Dream Theater, this is one of the better tracks by this progressive act

*the Fugs - I Couldn't Get High (2:08)...totally hilarious as most of their tracks are; Frank Zappa managed this late 60's folk outfit

*Fraction - Eye of the Hurricane (8:56)...rare early 70's hard rock; sorta sounds a bit like Deep Purple; the whole disc Moon Blood is solid (and the only one by them that I know of), with tracks This Bird and Come Out of Her also worth seeking

Fall of Troy - Ghostship (in 5 parts)...heavy progressive stuff, this American trio isn't too bad; too much screeching on most of their tracks but they get pretty intense on this bunch; really only recommended for serious post-hardcore fans

whatcanisay...F's aren't the easiest...instrumentals are, though, and I've got two today...

*Funkadelic - Maggot Brain (10:19)...great work by guitarist Eddie Hazel on this track; a must-listen for any fan of psychedelic guitar instrumentals

f57455h56pl.jpg

*Faith No More - Woodpecker From Mars (5:40)...from 1989's Real Thing; I'm not really into this band but this is an exceptional instrumental

Flying Saucer Attack has some decent, though mellow, instrumentals. The Fantomas have a bunch, too; much heavier there. The band Fuzzy Duck is a UK early-70's hard rock outfit that is worth persuing for the die hard collector.

G's should be a piece of cake. Might do them tonight if the ballgame is sleepy-time-time. Anxious to get to H so I can make another sacrifice to Jimi; will likely list about 20 or more instrumentals by him that will just blow your mind.

Is there bashing going on in this thread???

Maybe I don't understand this new world order around here.

...Speaking of which - NWO (New World Order) by Ministry is an excellent song.

going to exceed my quota today...

G

*Peter Gabriel - Solsbury Hill (4:21)...a great track off of his first solo disc; allegedly about his break-up with Genesis but I don't get it listening to the track; very worthwhile mellow pop piece

*Genesis - Mama (6:48)...from their self-titled 1983 release, this one really shows off Phil Collins with both the drum set and on vocals; I like some of their older stuff, too, but I prefer my progressive rock to be a little raunchier and a little more psychedelic (e.g. Tool, King Crimson)

*Golden Earring - Radar Love (6:24)...this hard rock outfit from the Netherlands had been producing stuff since 1965, but this 1973 release surely ranks among their best work; the whole disc is a worhwhile rock classic; I also really dig the track Kill Me off of the disc Switch...check it out sometime

c83575397s9.jpg

*Gov't Mule - Mother Earth (8:13)...hard rock outfit with a couple of former Allman Brothers members; Warren Haynes is lead guitar and vocals and does exceptional work throughout their self-titled 1995 debut; an outstanding track; heavy blues very reminiscent of Led Zeppelin, though Haynes' style is quite different than Jimmy's

d77980f7ukb.jpg

I don't care how great you are
Or what you're worth.
When it all comes down
You got to go back to mother earth.

*Grand Funk Railroad - Closer to Home (10:01)...semi-progressive rock piece has stood the test of time well; worth checking out even if you're not into these guys

*Guess Who - No Time (3:39)...my favorite track by this Canadian act; Randy Bachman on guitar and Burton Cummings on piano and vocals are the main cogs in this act; American Woman and Long Gone are a couple others worth getting

*Guns n' Roses - One in a Million (6:09)...left off the re-release of the mediocre GNR Lies due to language content, this is an early killer track by these boys; great interplay between acoustic and electric guitars in this one

Gomorrha - Dance on a Volcano (10:01)...if you're into rare quality pieces then see if you can't score something by this early 70's hard rock outfit; this is the only piece that I've been able to find and that was several years ago...been looking but to no avail

instrumental:
*David Gilmour - Raise My Rent (5:33)...Pink Floyd's guitarist; this is a cool track off his 1978 self-titled solo disc; the whole disc is worthwhile and a must-have if you're into Floyd's work; Mihalis and It's Deafinately are a couple of other instrumental tracks on the disc, though it contains some quality vocal tracks as well (There's No Way Out of Here & I Can't Breath Anymore stand out)

c85529qwjqq.jpg

Grip Inc. has several cool instrumentals as well (e.g. Toque de Muerto & Bug Juice) as does Gov't Mule (Trane, Birth of the Mule) while the band Godspeed You Black Emperor is more along the lines of Mogwai.

G stands for many things. Some more appealing than others.

semi-subliminal message: I am in need of a new source of peace of mind. one just died, another is tied up with a new job, and a third just had a bad car addicent so is unavailable for co-operation. If you live in T.O., can help me out, and want to make a friend for life in the process then score my e-mail off of Jack and drop me a word; I'm worth 2 or 3 hundred a month to a reliable contact; very mature and responsible user

My life is free now
My life is dear
I love you sweet leaf

I've got the discs Psalm 69 and Animositomina by Ministry. They're okay but nothing special, in my opinion. Pantera is a bit better, I'd say, but they're not my faves either.

Fade alert on my NHL plays.
I finally get up for the year, with the Wings win yesterday, but I'm looking at an 0-3 today...2 dreamola totals and a prop on the home teams, which my Leafs (which I'm likely to disown very soon) are crushing...didn't expect 6 (through 2 only) goals against the Buds tonight. Pathetic.

Now I have become a fool
'cause I listened to the mule.

d067345bq7t.jpg

outstanding concert & misc. recordings:
Live at Isle of Fehmarn Sept.6,1970
Live Gottenberg, Sweden Sept.1, 1970
Live Baltimore June 13, 1970
Live Norman Oklahoma May 8, 1970
Hendrix & Jack Bruce (Cream bass & vocals) 1968 studio recordings
Live Stockholm (released 2004; not sure of original recording date)
Rainbow Bridge concert (circa 1970)
Hendrix & Stephen Stills basement recordings 1968
Hendrix - Albert Hall Experience (released 2001; again, unsure of recording date)

I could go on but if you need more then just let me know. Not sure who out there appreciates his work so I won't go too bonkers here. Collaberations with B.B. King, Johnny Winters, Eric Burdon, Little Richard, Janis Joplin, John Lennon, Albert King and Jim Morrison are also available, just to name a bunch. That Fehrman show is about the best I've heard, though all of them have good moments. He seems to have been a little too wasted during his December shows, quite consistently, so I'd stick to anything outside of that hazy month.

If anybody else digs this cat then I'd love to hear about it.

Going to do H. a little more thoroughly; might tackle tonight or might leave until tomorrow (I just can't say). In the meantime I recommend the track TITLED H., off the disc Aenima by the superb progressive metal outfit Tool.

Until then. My thanks to Jimi for all that he did in such a short time.

I think the spelling is FEHMARN.

Not sure.

In Germany, I know that.

If anyone can correct my spelling, if needed, then goal.

There's also a classic picture of Jimi puffing a spliff that I'd like to find. Spent the better part of an hour looking on the net and can't find it. If you can help out then post ahoy. Or better yet, if you can help me out (and are in T.O.) then drop me a word via e-mail. I'm in need.

Now we're getting somewhere. I had no idea you liked hardcore industrial shite.

I like just about anything that isn't reggae. Even some country.

Senior year of high school, my pregame mix before football games was:

Nine Inch Nails - March of the Pigs
Alice in Chains - Them Bones
Anthrax - Only
KMFDM - Drug Against War
Ministry - Just One Fix
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

Fast and full of rage.

...and I feel this comin' over like a storm again...considerately

Jeez do my hockey picks ever suck in the early going. 0-7 on my last 7 plays. I REALLY miss baseball.

Somebody just handed me something that takes away some of the sting. That and Jimi's Voodoo Chile are helping to remind me that at least a couple of things are a little bit more important than the handicrapping. At least a couple of things.

H

Hawkwind - Mirror of Illusion (6:56)...off the first disc by this British early heavy metal act; lyrics are a little too Tolkein for me, but they're worth a score if you like early 70's hard rock

*Head Machine - Orgasm (9:00)...hard rock outfit from 1970; very tough score but worth a look; similar to Cactus, also from that period, and also a bit like Deep Purple, which makes sense considering the band's name

*the Hollies - Long Cool Woman (In a Black Dress) (3:19)...really the only track I can stand by this Byrds clone, this one is a good paced classic rocker

*Humble Pie - I Walk On Guilded Splinters (23:28)...live off of Rockin' the Fillmore, this track shows Peter Frampton at his best and bluesiest

c402046i216.jpg

instrumental:
*High on Fire - Sons of Thunder (7:10)...alternative metal act formed from the ashes of the doom metal outfit Sleep, this track I like because they sh-t th- f-c- up; worth a score if you're into contemporary hard rockers though, obviously, I'm not crazy about their other work...Sleep was the better act

*Buckethead - Clones (4:33)...from the great disc Population Override, from 2004, he sounds a bit like Eddie Van Halen on ludes for this track...probably not a great selling line but I'm just listening to it now and he does sound somewhat like Eddie; this disc is some of his mellower work but he has a decent band backing him on this go--quality blues-rock

g32850khcg3.jpg

Not lotsa H action but Jimi made up for that.

Not lotsa action, period, in this thread but I'm having some fun putting it together. Besides, if anyone does a search for, say "Hendrix" or "Pink Floyd" in the future then I know I'll be hit.

POW!

Smoke and the tunes is totally helping me forget about my three straight drop-offs since the baseball ended on Sunday. Small, but drop-offs just the same. I may even be smart enough to take Thursday off from the NHL, what with my real horror-show performance there.

may even be

Iggy Pop - Lust For Life (5:13)...from the 1977 disc of the same name; if you dig this guy then check out his earlier work with the Stooges

Incubus - 11 AM (4:13)...one of the more enjoyable tracks from this middle-of-the-road Indie outfit

*Iron Butterfly - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (17:02)...psychedelic hard rock from 1968; classic track and these guys were well ahead of their time, but this piece sounds quite a bit dated...still a rock classic

c74048sc4k7.jpg

*Iron Maiden - Run to the Hills (3:52)...from the classic 1982 disc the Number of the Beast, this is a great hard-rocker; I'm only sorta into these guys but have always liked the disc Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (1988)

f16972msg7m.jpg

d85766bes9j.jpg

*Isis - Firdous E Bareen (7:50)...this Boston quintet produces great alternative metal though I can do without the death-metal singing that appears on some of their work; this track, from 2006's In the Absence of Truth is very good, as is the whole disc; definately worth checking out if you haven't heard them and you're into heavy progressive stuff...they're actually not that heavy...this piece is pretty mellow actually; a good trip; their discs Oceanic and Panopticon are also worth a listen

h96600psg7m.jpg

Iommi & Hughes - Resolution Song (4:55)...off 2005's Fused, Glenn Hughes is the former lead singer from Trapeze and he also did some work with later Deep Purple and Black Sabbath; Tony Iommi is, of course, the guitarist from Black Sabbath

instrumental(s):
*Isis - Altered Course (9:57)...off of 2004's Panopticon, this is a cool piece
*Isis - Maritime (3:04)...another good piece, off of 2002's Oceanic

*Buckethead - Cross Section (6:58)...a 2006 collaboration simply going by the name Thanatopsis - Anatomize; good backing musicians for him on this disc and he again shows off his talent on this track

i83208a8kv3.jpg

Soldier blue in the barren wastes
Hunting and killing their game
Raping the woman and wasting the man
The only good indians are tame

Selling them whiskey and taking their gold
Enslaving the young and destroying the old

Run to the hills, run for your lives
Run to the hills, run for your lives

(Iron Maiden, 1982)

Not that you care, but I found it interesting that Slash was interviewed on Stern this week. He pretty much dissed Buckethead saying although technically proficient he wasn't that great and wasn't true rock n roll. Whatever that means.

I enjoyed a few of the tracks you listed.

Also probably going to buy and read Slash's biography this week.

One in a million is a great track....although racy

Hey, Bulldog, I LOVE Physical Graffiti.
Was given my first CD player as a gift--some 15 or 20 years ago--and I was allowed to purchase ONE disc at the same time. I chose Physical Graffiti. It's got to be my favorite Zeppelin disc (though I also like I,II and IV quite a bit).

As for Slash's opinion of Buckethead...that's interesting but it sounds like sour grapes, in my opinion. I personally prefer Buckethead over Slash and everybody's talkin' 'bout the new sound, funny, but it's still rock n' roll to me.

a little foreshadowing of J

Rock n' roll!

will I be back tomorrow for the punchline of the joke?

*James Gang - The Bomber (5:38)...off the solid disc Rides Again, this features some of Joe Walsh's earliest and best work; highly recommended

g24099z6234.jpg

*Jane's Addiction - Three Days (10:48)...excellent track by this contemporary act; guitarist Dave Navarro reminds me of Jethro Tull's Martin Barre, but they rarely sound like Tull on their tracks, which cover the range from folk to jazz to punk to indie rock; this is clearly their standout track, in my opinion, but the whole disc--Ritual de lo Habitual--is excellent throughout; this one also made Guitar Player magazine's top 100 greatest guitar solos, coming in at #100

c62482a0mt1.jpg

*Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit (2:34)...totally classic track off of the excellent disc Surrealistic Pillow (1967), Grace Slick really pours it out on this one; Jorma Kaukonen was a very underrated guitar player; also check out the track Hey Fredrick off the disc Volunteers

f55088wfiaq.jpg

When the men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
And you just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving low
Go ask Alice...I think she'll know
When logic and proportion
Have fallen sloppy dead
And the white knight is talking backwards
And the red queen's off with her head
Remember what the dormouse said
"Feed your head...feed your head!

g40564axjgg.jpg

Either go away or go all the way in
Look at what you hold
Come back down on a spear of silence
When it flies
You go on through
You come on through
Thr rediculous no
Oh no
One more pair of
Loving eyes look down on you
Sheets and a pillow
How old will you have to be before you
Stop believing
That those eyes will look down on you
That way forever
There you sit mouth wide open
Animals nipping at your sides
On wire wheels the four stroke man
Opens wide
The marching sound
The constant ride
On the gasket is mine
All mine
One more pair of
Wire wheels bear down on you
Gear stripping the willow
How many machine men will you see before you
Stop believing that speed
Will slide down on you
Like brakes in bad weather

*Jethro Tull - Locomotive Breath (4:22)...one of a slew of great tracks off of 1971's Aqualung; We Used to Know and To Cry You a Song, off of different discs, are also solid Tull tracks

d29151895ja.jpg

*Billy Joel - It's Still Rock and Roll to Me (3:01)...good timing, if nothing else; guy has a number of solid tracks

Special mention goes out for Elton John (it's still rock n' roll to me).
Also worth noting is Judas Priest 1st discs, Rocka-Rolla from 1974 and Sad Wings of Destiny from 1976. Neither sound like later Priest. Very psychedelic and alternative metal with many mellower passages mixed into the songs. Really cool stuff. Got an instrumental you gotta check out:
instrumental
*Judas Priest - Caviar and Meths (2:02)...off of their first disc, Rocka Rolla, you will not believe that this is Judas Priest. Just a mellow little piece but a very rewarding listen IMO. A beauty.

Standing by my window
Breathing summer breeze
Saw a figure floating
'Neath the willow trees
Asked us if we were happy
We said we didn't know
Took us by the hands and
Off we go.

We follow the dreamer
Through the purple, hazy cloud
So he can control our sense of time.
We thought we were lost but
No matter how we tried
Everyone was in peace of mind.

We felt the sensations
Tripped inside our brains
Finding complete contentment there
And all the tensions
That hurt us in the past
Just seemed to vanish in thin air.

Set in the cosmos
Is a single, sonic sound
That is vibrating constantly
And if we could get it
And hold on to the note
We would see our minds are free.
Oh, they're free.

(JP, Dreamer Deceiver,Sad Wings,1976)

Buckethead...2 pieces for today, both off of 2006's the Elephant Man's Alarm Clock. Check these two out and I think that you'll agree that Slash doesn't know what he's talkin' about when he claims that Buckethead isn't really rock and roll, if that's truly what he claims. Regardless:
*Final Wars (4:08)
*Bird With a Hole in the Stomach (4:47)

The whole disc is pretty solid. Lurker at the Threshold, in 4 parts, is also worthwhile. You have to like instrumental work to get into this guy as his stuff is strictly that. I still say that Mrs. Beasley kicks some serious ass. Much of his work does.

K will be a piece of cake.
Might devote a day to Zeppelin, when L hits.
Can't wait for P's.

Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys (11:40)

If you had just a minute to breathe
and they granted you one final wish
would you ask for something, like another chance.

Or something similar as this
don't worry too much, it'll happen to you
as sure as your sorrows rejoice.
And the thing that disturbs you is only the sound
of the low spark of high-heeled boys.
