Given the lack of games w/ lines today, figured I would get a conversation going about everyone's thoughts about the season so far.

It's still obviously earlier, but after a month of play I'm interested in people's takes on teams to this point. Who has surprised you, in both positive and negative ways? Also any strong expectations you have out of any teams at this point?

kentucky has suprised me in how bad they suck this year. I see poor motivation, poor execution, and poor effort. I'm afraid it's going to be a long year! :com:

Duke has looked great, even though i hate them. Syracuse's lack of defense has really surprised me, Boeheim has to realize you can't play zone anymore, every team can shoot the 3 so good.

Texas has suprised me and how bad Southern Illinois has played. Also it seems like the books have adjusted for the unraked favored over a ranked team.

I was thinking about that the other day. I haven't played any of those games yet this year. Seems like the last year or two, they haven't hit w/ as much consistency. Anyone have the stats on those type of plays?

Unranked favored against a ranked team are 1-3 so far this year.
St. Joe's -2 lost to gonzaga
Uconn -4 lost to gonzaga
Arizona - 3 beat Tex A&M
Illinois -2 lost to arizona

St. Joes & Illinois blew late leads, uconn game came down to the buzzer.

I agree especially since I really like Gillespie as a coach. Given the success he had at UTEP and Tamu, I figured he'd step right in, reawaken the program and be in the thick of the SEC again. I know they've had injuries--big time--and that adjusting to a new coach is always tough, but they look clueless. Still think Gillespie will do great things there, but unlike his instant turnarounds at his last twp stops, we might not see much progress until next season.

Tenn, UGA, Fla, Vandy and South Carolina have all looked better that UK in the SEC East so far this year.....could they really finish in last in the division?

Yes I will, tomorrow morning/midday when I have more time. It will probably start many comments, which us good.

Just make sure you know it comes from 34 years of some kind of "experience" that changes.

being a season ticket holder, DePaul is under achieving to alarming degrees. just into the start of his third year, fans and the media are starting to be restless with coach Jerry Wainwright.

I thought Syracuse would be coming together quickly than they have so far.

I've been impressed w/ Wright St. and Valpo out of the Horizon league. Also Detroit has played decently considering that Cotton is off of the team.

False line movement:

Basically a line that moves early in the day one direction, usually abruptly. In CBB it will tend to be a point or more. This can be interpeted as a steam play with other bettors possibly taggging along for the ride. If it is a false move you may end up getting burned. Sharp professional players may have moved the number down to get what they want, then place the larger wager on the other side.

This type of movement is extremely hard to track, but can be more easily done with the low volume of take this time of year. If you think their is a lot of action taken on CBB this time of year, I would tend to say that is incorrect. My best advice, if you have the time: Take a hard look at low volume games and track movement, especially opening lines, mid-morning, and mid-afternoon. Those are the games that get my attention at the very least.

Sounds kind of simple, but I say again it is extremely hard. I also think it is important to note moneyline percentages.

But, when you combine moneline, parlays, teaser money into the equation - it gets even harder. Other than that, get to know how some of the books operate, they can tip you off sometimes.

Confused yet? You should be, as confusion crosses my mind everyday. The most important thing, do your homework, set your own line. Then line movement interpetation can be an added help. And if you remember anything, forget about how the two teams played last time out, it will get in the way and fog your mind.

Maybe we can continue this in general sometime, as there are many factors I haven't included and don't know about myself. Just one little guy plugging away when I have time.

Good luck out there, things constantly are changing.

Had this discussion/argument with Hippo the other day. Illinois/Zona total. I see it at 136 and begging for over $$$. It suddenly drops to 134 (at more than 1 book!)and stays there for no more than 2minutes, then hops back up to 136.5:shrug:

Her logic was exactly what you described. IE: a sharp lays $10,000 on the under, only to swing the line 2 points, and plop $50,000 on the over? My question is why not just 'buy' the points? Has to be cheaper, no?

KC, can you cite any recent examples?

Thanks!

BTW, that Zona game went under but went into OT and the over hit.

Wolf don't you think one of the best ways to figure out line movement is for example if a large consensus is on one side and the line moves the other way. I have found this to be very succesful.

what source do you use for your "concensus"? i don't think you can figure out anything from any numbers online except for the lines at the different books, those hold the info.
