False line movement:
Basically a line that moves early in the day one direction, usually abruptly. In CBB it will tend to be a point or more. This can be interpeted as a steam play with other bettors possibly taggging along for the ride. If it is a false move you may end up getting burned. Sharp professional players may have moved the number down to get what they want, then place the larger wager on the other side.
This type of movement is extremely hard to track, but can be more easily done with the low volume of take this time of year. If you think their is a lot of action taken on CBB this time of year, I would tend to say that is incorrect. My best advice, if you have the time: Take a hard look at low volume games and track movement, especially opening lines, mid-morning, and mid-afternoon. Those are the games that get my attention at the very least.
Sounds kind of simple, but I say again it is extremely hard. I also think it is important to note moneyline percentages.
But, when you combine moneline, parlays, teaser money into the equation - it gets even harder. Other than that, get to know how some of the books operate, they can tip you off sometimes.
Confused yet? You should be, as confusion crosses my mind everyday. The most important thing, do your homework, set your own line. Then line movement interpetation can be an added help. And if you remember anything, forget about how the two teams played last time out, it will get in the way and fog your mind.
Maybe we can continue this in general sometime, as there are many factors I haven't included and don't know about myself. Just one little guy plugging away when I have time.
Good luck out there, things constantly are changing.
