Bowl Season: 6-2-1
Woke up this morning and had hoped that the effort Maryland put forth in the second half last night was a bad. It wasn't and it left me with a 1-1-1 day on the bowls yesterday. Anyway, on to today where we have three more bowlers, a full day of college hoops and an intriguing NFL game tonight......what a great day for sports!!
Wake Forest ML, -130 over Uconn.
First, an explanation on the money line. The line I got was -2 at -120. With the ML at -130, I am thinking why not just spend the extra juice because, after watching both these teams all season, if there ever was a game that was going to be decided late in the game by a single point, it is this one. These teams loved to play close games and pull it out in the end.
Its been said WF might be disappointed being here after the Orange Bowl last year, but this is the first time ever the school has qualified for back to back bowl games. Wake's got a lot of seniors who see that as their legacy and the best way to puncuate that is with a bowl win in their home state. Both teams play solid D, are opportunistic and will run, run, run to set up the pass. But, I think Wake is one the more underrated teams in the nation as far as how fast and physical they play, and those skills will shine greatly today.
The difference is that Wake has more big game experience and they have better playmakers. In a tight game, I'll take my chances with Joey Adams, Kenneth Moore or Kevin Marion making the big plays on offense and in the return game which I dont think Uconn can match despite the solid play from QB Lorenzen and the emergence of RB Andre Dixon. Just feel Wake has more weapons.
Meanwhile, on defense both have been good at takeaways with Uconn at 7th nationally in TO margin and WF at 15th. But, there's a couple of things that stand out as I see it. Wake has scored non offensive touchdowns 10 times this year and are 5-1 in games in which they do so. And, in a game where both teams are very dedicated to the run, I think WF can expose a somewhat soft defensive front of the Huskies. Watch WF Center Steve Justice. He's a potential first day draft pick and anchors a good, experience WF OL that has a decided edge against Uconn first line of defense.
I love both coaches, but think Grobe is a better game planner than Edsall and will have some tricks up his sleeve to get a game breaker like Kenneth Moore the ball a lot in some unconventional ways. In the end, I see a close battle, but WF's OL will win their battles, Moore will have 2-3 huge plays that'lll change momentum, the Deacons will somehow get a D or ST score.....and their kicker Sam Swank, one of the best in the game, will boot four field goals, including some big ones late in the game to ice this contest.
Good luck to everyone today!!!
