My friend's father died suddenly a few days ago while playing hockey. He was a lifetime smoker, for you smokers who need motivation.

In any case, I would like to send something to my friend. I'm sure they have a ton of flowers and gift baskets but I want to wait a few weeks and would prefer to send something other than those two things.

Any ideas?

I was thinking maybe a donation to something in his father's name...like the American Heart Association, or something along those lines.

Donations is nice.

Best idea I've heard was to wait a few days (week) and take your friend out. There's alot of support around now, but the support system fades and thats when your really needed.

Good luck

A donation in his name to the local youth hockey club would be really appreciated I'm sure. Sorry to hear about your friends loss.

both ideas are excellant..

in fact a little buddy to buddy time w/a thank you from whatever charity you decide in his father name would work as well..

just an ear would be great. He's going through a rough time, lend him an ear while taking him out for beers or something. That's what I would want...

This is a nice gesture too outside of a charity.

saint, go the the local library, or better yet, contact the library in fla, and donate money and they'll put the persons name on the front cover of the book in honor of them. at least that's what I've done in my community. it's a nice gesture for the person who's passed...

Send him

Send him

Your wife/girlfriend for a few days to abuse I am sure that will help alleviate some stress on his part and hell since you cant attend the funeral she will already be there to go imagine your buddy getting blown by her in the limo on the way to the burial site. He will be all smiles.

great questions. I agree with the idea of doing something now like a card and then something in 2 weeks a little more special when the support does seem to wain. Keep us informed on what you do. A book on this subject might be a good gift too, but I don't know any titles to suggest.

matter of fact, he doesn't want anything. just be around if he needs a sounding board.

Thanks for the thoughtful suggestions guys, I'll let you know which we do. It will involve a donation in his dad's name to something, just have to decide on what.

Summer after I graduated from college, the brother of one of my best friends collapsed and died while mowing the law (at age 27). Then, in something I still can't believe, his girlfriend of four years broke up with him THE NIGHT OF THE WAKE. About a month later, a couple other friends and I happened to have a trip to Vegas planned, and we all chipped in and about him a flight out to meet us. He was in a PhD program at the time (at North Carolina, actually) and didn't have a lot of excess cash, which is why he wasn't coming with in the first place. He flew out and had a great time. I know he appreciated it a lot.
