When I was much younger I was a pretty good bowler. It's been 2 years since I bowled, but had a fair outing considering I used a house ball 179, 167, 171. not to bad for an old guy. Now I have the bug to get back into the game.

My question is: If I wanted to get a good all around ball for the different lane conditions out there today what would you guys in the know recommend???.....:SIB

I'd recommend getting a Nintendo Wii with the sports pack game. The bowling game on there is tremendous and hours of fun.

I think they stopped making real bowling balls when the Wii came out.

Do you throw the hook or are you a straight bowler?

Don't listen to Nole, he stinks. Out of the box last night, I threw a 731 (225-228-278) with the Hammer Black Widow Bite. I also carry the original Hammer Black Widow and Roto-Grip SD-73. I am partial to Hammer, take a look at their line. Bowling.com gives you write-ups for the high performance bowling balls on the market.

Several of my friends have thrown the Black Widow and they have scored well.... One of them just threw 792 needed double in 10th and left 7-9 split..

I am using 15pd ebonite total NV and I love it. I don't know all the bowling terms... but it reacts awesome... can't go wrong w/ this ball. I think i bought it for 130 about 8 months ago... the price should have gone down a lil.

On the course!
You can by a decent used ball at a pro shop, and have it drilled to fit your grip for a helluva lot cheaper than buying a new one. For a guy who is just looking to get back into the game, don't waste your money on a new one.

If you know any bowlers who always have to have the newest thing on the market, they are always giving their stuff away! One of the guys I bowl with gets second hand balls all of the time from guys for about $30-50 bucks for a ball the other guy paid +$200 for a few months ago!

Some guys will bowl 15-24 games with a ball and just not have a feel for it. And if it is a guy who wants to maintain a 230 average.......he aint keeping it

Just ask around.!

I threw my first 300 last month with an Ebonite Infinite one. That is a decent ball for the medium to heavy oil conditions. New balls like the Brunswick Fury seem to be pretty hot in my region

I was going to suggest what XYZ said. Great value in used balls. I don't know about where you are, but here, a reallynice decent looking used ball with about 10-20 games on it goes for $50. Plugging & drilling extra, of course, but if you are lucky, one or more of the holes will fit right and already be drilled in the right position for you, so you may be able to eliminate a plug or two. Even if not, you should be able to get two balls(one for light & one for med or heavy dressing (oil)) conditions) for less than the cost of a new high end market ball. Hopefully, there is a good pro shop there to guide you & set you up properly.
If your old one is worn or "doesn't do anything", you might consider using that for your ball for straight spares.
I would also consider, since you mentioned older guy, going to a 15 lb ball, not 16. Many pro's use a 15. Whatever you lose in pin carry should be off set by the increase in speed you can get with it..........giving you around the same amount of power to your shot. You'll have more energy towards the end of the night, also, along with less muscle and tendon aches.
The Black Widow ball is nice, but if you are not (or can"t) put anything special on your shot (and it sounds like you don't) it would be a waste of a couple of hundred $.
No 300's for me lately, as I am down to just bowling once per week. I do have 3 of them, however, along with a 777 high series. Never got the elusive 800 series, but I have finished with an 807 for the last 3 games of a 4 game set.
GL with your game & choice.

Thanks Hitman, that's all good info. I have an old Columbia 300 yellow dot, so I might keep that for the spares I think???

All kidding aside, Nole knows his stuff and routinely bowl in regionals I think. I looked him up on bowl.com where you can find anyone that is in a sanctioned league, although his average is still lower than mine the past few years.

My dad buys at least 2-3 balls a year, it is his hobby I guess, but if you are ever in need I am sure I can help you out relatively inexpensive. He just sold the Elite Shark to a teammate for $50.

Getting back to Hammer, there is also the Black Widow Pearl. A teammate bought this one a month ago, he doesn't have a bad average at 195, and he threw 692-710-706 his first 3 weeks with it.

Good luck and keep us posted. I like this kind of talk as I have been in 3 leagues/year for many years now.

Buy a used one and have it custom drilled. I got a Columbia 300 Messenger and was simply amazed at how much it helped my game. I average about 190 and previously using house ball averaged about 170.

More bowlers coming out of the woodwork here at Jack's...:D

I avg 195 bowling once a week--used to bowl twice a week for years-- and I used to be the guy that had to have the newest equipment as soon as it hit the shelves. Not any more...:nono:

There are plenty of guys in my league that get rid of all-but-new balls on a regular basis and I buy balls for as little as 50 bucks.

I bowl in state, regional and national tourneys with the owner of the house I bowl at and he gives me a great deal on plugging and drilling those balls I buy from the guys.

Kind of embarrassed about my high game. 295--pulled the chit out of the last ball in the 10th and left the "Greek church" High series of 744 the same night.
Been bowling like crap lately. had a killer 522 last night....:mj02:
