Miniature Schnauzer

20 lbs
Dont shed a hair
extremely smart
very friendly

Cannot go wrong!

And I might add that I am HUGE supporter of rescue organizations, I own one full blood schnauzer{Hurricane Katrina survivor} and one mix schnauzer/terrier and best dogs in the world!

Very easy to look up rescue organizations by area or what kind of dog you want. Rescue dogs seem to make even better pets because you can see it in their eyes and demeanor how much they appreciate being given a good home!

Good luck!

I had a Miniature Schnauzer when I was younger.
They are smart well behaved and they don`t shed.
But they are quit yappy, they bark at the drop of a hat.

My neighbor had a Scottish Terrier and would say this is what
your looking for. Not sure if they shed, but they are quit playful
very loyal and very smart

I think the Goldendoodles and the Labradoodles are adorable. They are smart, allergy-friendly and even tempered.

Seriously
Jack Russell's are about the size you want and are very smart but if you have kids THEY ARE NOT GOOD WITH KIDS.

Temperament

The official AKC breed description says "Sweetness of temperament is the hallmark of the Newfoundland; this is the most important single characteristic of the breed." They are nicknamed the "Gentle Giant" and "Nature's babysitter." They are protective of children.

Relative to other breeds, Newfoundland puppies, especially older puppies, tend to be calm. Newfoundlands take up to three years to reach full maturity. They have deep barks, and are excellent guard dogs. They have been known to grieve when separated from their families. Their large size makes them difficult to keep in many living situations, but since they are not very active, as long as the room they lie down in is big, they won't really move too much and just stay there for long periods of time. They do not move around in the house too much, though they tend to spread out and cover large areas of space. Exercise is great for Newfs, although they would be quite content to sit at home for long periods of time as long as they know that there is someone there to love them. A Newfoundland will know whether or not someone is at home and as long as someone is with them, they are quite content, but if there is no one home, a Newfoundland dog will actually appear to be sad and sit and wait for you to return home, even stare out the window while waiting for his family to return.

How is the Newfoundland with children?
The Newf is renowned for his gentleness, protectiveness and love for children. He is tolerant of behavior by children far beyond that which would make other breeds snap or walk away. Because of this he is ideally suited to being a child's companion, but the adult must accept the duty to protect the Newfie from abuse by the child. It is no accident that the Nana in the original Peter Pan was a Newfoundland.

The tranquil nature of the Newfoundland has been found to have such an excellent effect on hyperactive children that there was a clinical study done in the 1970s using Newfoundlands as a part of the therapy.

don't shed if cared for...
