I encourage you to read Susan Brown's wonderful essay that challenges how we define success in our lives.

My generation has lost touch with what it means to be content. We equate contentment with home or bank account size. Are we content? I suppose we could ask the psychiatrists and counselors we regularly visit. Alternatively, maybe look at divorce statistics or observe declining church roles while noting increasing doctor visits for stress-related ailments. Maybe interview local pharmacists who increasingly fill prescriptions for sleep and stress disorders or ask a financial analyst to explain the reason behind the increasing debt ratios.
I wish I had clear-cut answers as to why our generation has taken a 180-degree turn from prior generations. Success is good, but a problem occurs when enough is not enough. Our nation is heading down a destructive road unless our values change. Bigger government is not the answer. A diamond's size does not make a lasting relationship. True beauty is not superficial. House size, career title or bank balance does not equal contentment.

you are very correct that most people can not be content. I am king of content. Others close to me might say/have said I am not motivated, wasting my talents, wasting my intelligence, lazy, or scared of change, but I truly believe in being content and happy in your situation and life, and that's where I am.

Awesome SixFive. I'll get were you're at sooner or later.

I try to go by the credo, "Work smarter, not harder".

(I'll try to edit in a couple more things later.)

Me too. I'm the same way.

But, I also realize the modern world needs those crazy/stressed out go-getters. Whoever they are, they kinda "take one for the team".
If everyone was content, humans wouldn't innovate at the same rate.

that was me at one time...i got so burnt out because i couldn't keep up with the demand for business, that i just said fuk it & retired...& it was the best decision that i made...& probably prolonged my life.

different people reach contentment at different levels...i guess its up to each individual to realize when that is....

This thread is interesting. I was caught in a situation were the place I worked for 27 years closed.

I can honestly say at this point that that I am very content.

I travel now and enjoy things around me and really have a new view point as to what's important.

Agree AR
There are some that whatever they have is never enough--not that ambition is bad but at some point in time must weigh the hustle and bustle vs as Clint refered to--being content.

Used to be a workaholic--and some still accuse me of it because 7 day a week schedule, but not work to me--just something I do--like shaving in the morning--and I'm free most days after 10 or 11 am--so almost like part time job.:)

I have never cared about being filthy rich--as long as I know I can live modestly if I chose to or was forced to quit work tomorrow--I'm quite content.

I do have concerns sometimes about being too complacent--when having opportunity to earn more but passing because it would interfere with leisure time. It bugs me to think I might be getting a little bit lazy--but if I tell myself- hey your just "semi retired" not lazy--I can generally fool myself into not feeling too badly :)

This is the stupidest thread I've ever been dumb enough to read. I can see that Jack is content to let it remain in the political forum, despite it's lack of required content.

I might be the most content person here. It just seems silly to advertise it.
