Scott McClellan Levels Charges of Deception Against White House Over CIA Leak Case

WASHINGTON ? Former White House press secretary Scott McClellan is lashing out at the Bush administration, claiming in his new book that the White House intentionally misled him concerning the CIA leak case and that President Bush was involved in his passing along "false information" to the press.
Public Affairs ? the publisher of "What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and What's Wrong With Washington" ? released on its Web site a three-paragraph excerpt of McClellan's book, which is due to be released in April.
Click here to see the full excerpt.
The book highlights the contentious period in 2003 when McClellan stood by top White House advisers, including I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby ? who since has been convicted on obstruction charges and had his prison sentence commuted by Bush ? and Bush's top political adviser, Karl Rove, who has since left the administration.
The CIA Leak case gripped Washington after former Ambassador Joseph Wilson leveled charges in a July 2003 New York Times column that a key item in Bush's 2003 State of the Union address ? that Iraq was seeking to buy yellowcake uranium from Niger ? was not true.

Soon after, syndicated columnist Robert Novak wrote a piece in which he identified Wilson's wife, Valerie Plame, as a covert CIA operative, thus opening the floodgates of an inquiry focusing on whether the Bush administration retaliated against Wilson and Plame by uncovering her secret identity.
The book excerpt gives no details about the president or the vice president's alleged involvement, but it names five top officials McClellan says allowed him mislead the public.
"I stood at the White House briefing room podium in front of the glare of the klieg lights for the better part of two weeks and publicly exonerated two of the senior-most aides in the White House: Karl Rove and Scooter Libby," McClellan wrote.
"There was one problem. It was not true.
"I had unknowingly passed along false information. And five of the highest ranking officials in the administration were involved in my doing so: Rove, Libby, the vice president, the president's chief of staff and the president himself."
At the time, the president's chief of staff was Andy Card.
McClellan also writes he felt his trust was breeched.
"The most powerful leader in the world had called upon me to speak on his behalf and help restore credibility he lost amid the failure to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq."
In an March interview with CNN's Larry King, McClellan said that if he knew now what he knew then, he wouldn't have issued the reassurances to the press, and suggested that he believed that both he and the president were misled by advisers ? indicating that while the president passed on bad information, he didn't do it knowingly.
King asked McClellan if he was lied to, and McClellan responded:
"Well, Larry, I said what I believed to be true at the time. It was also what the president believed to be true at the time based on assurances that we were both given. Knowing what I know today, I would have never said that back then."

My question is WHEN DO WE GET FREED FROM OUR REIGN OF INCOMPETENT POLITICIANS and CROOKS, and WHOs gonna occupy the country?

We are just beginning to feel this nightmare. Look around. We are being bankrupt right before our eyes and we are helpless to stop it as long as we are in that toilet Iraq. Look around. Is anything right out there?

Who cares what former press secretary Scott McClellan thinks or has to say about anything?!!? Do you not think that since he was not allowed into the "Inner-Circle" of the Bush White House and was replaced he might just have an "Ax To Grind"?!!? To answer your question Sponge(Scott Mccellan is he a liar to?), I'm not sure. I do know however that if McCellan's book was a "Glowing Review" of the Bush White House the title of this post would read: Scott McClellan-what a lying piece of chit!!!:yup

Lots of "Gloom & Doomers" in this post wanting to behead their President & Vice President, saying the country is bankrupt because of the war and all hope is lost. I have to admitt that I am almost pulling for Barack Hussein, almost, so maybe the clowns on the left will start pulling for the United States of America again and at the very least respect the office of the Presidency. If I agree or disagree with Barack Hussein's actions as President, if he is elected, I will still respect the office and will never wish him harm. Nor will I hope the country goes in the tank because of his actions just to say I was right and the liberals were wrong. Hey, I just might have hit upon a new concept?!!? Let US be Americans first, Republicans or Democrats second, and last but not least respectful human beings that honor their country and it's institutions!!!!!!! One can only hope.---DT

No one is hoping the country goes in the tank. It just happens to be going there as it is being driven by Bush. Maybe the right should put America first and honor it's institutions and see this administration for what it is.

Your points are well taken StevieD. When I read the "Numerous" articles about the United States and how great it is in the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, etc., I am ashamed to be on the right. Those flag-waving patroits at MSNBC(Olbermann, Matthews, Russert & Abrams) never miss an opportunity to rally their audience to America's cause when it comes to the war, the economy or anything else take makes this country look better in the eyes of the world. It makes my heart feel warm and I sleep better at night knowing these left-wing media outlets hold their country in such high regards. The respect they have shown their President in a time of war makes me teary-eyed.

Thanks for "enlightening" me and my bothers on the right StevieD. We will try to do better and act more like those on the left when it comes to respecting America and it's institutions. Maybe when Barack Hussein is elected, RIGHT!!!???

Keep honoring Bush and backing his occupation of Iraq. Or be an American and stand up for what is right. It's your choice.

obviously honesty isn't a real big part of your life and if you think these dirtbags you blindly support have been straight with you then maybe you should go get yourself some help. Just how many people have to come forward to wake you and your elk up. Its insanity at its finest. Absolute insanity. http://www.rageagainsttheright.com/uploaded_images/absolute_corruption-716129.jpg
If Obama gets elected and outs a CIA agent and lies us into the biggest debacle in our history and has caused us to be hated all around the world, i will be the first to step up and ask for the noose.

Only help me & my elk need is you & your elk Sponge. Maybe one day I will wake up and be the American StevieD wants me to be. Until then I'll just continue to support OUR President in a time of war, support OUR troops in Iraq & elsewhere, hope for OUR complete victory in Iraq, hope victory comes as quickly as possible so our sons & daughters can return home and recognize my country as a liberator of people who yearn for freedom. I apologize to my fellow countrymen for having these postions & feelings but with Sponge & StevieD trying to help me, I feel like maybe I can be saved from this obtuse way of thinking.

Very deep and well thoughtout reply. Did you get this from the Barack Hussein web site, the New York Times, MSNBC or Air America?

Double Two, quick question. Were you as supportive of Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, when they were your President? Are they still to be supported and lauded?

Since I am the problem, bringing this country to it's knees by supporting OUR President, OUR troops and by wanting America to win the war in Iraq, I might just respectfully retire from this forum. I will leave you anti-America, Bush-bashing liberals to yourselves.

To answer your question Chadman, I was too young to give a darn about politics when Carter was in office but I did support Clinton when he was my President especially when military action had to be taken. I did not agree with all of his policies but I did respect his office even if he disgraced it by his own actions. Just because my President is a Democrat, I would never hope for bad things to happen to America so a Republican might be voted into the White House the next time around. Wish I could say the same about the left.

Of course my way of thinking is what's wrong with this country. Just can not bring myself to call the President of the United States the Anti-Christ, Hitler, an idiot, etc.; can not hope for the worst in Iraq and can not believe that some in this country say these things and feel this way. Guess Barack Hussein is our best choice for President because then and only then will the liberals here and in the media support OUR country. Again, I apologize for wanting my country to be victorious in Iraq and for respecting the office of the President. Might not have to put up with me much longer.
