Chipper out of lineup
By Carroll Rogers, crogers@ajc.com | Sunday, June 8, 2008, 11:37 AM

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The news is not so great from the clubhouse. Chipper Jones is out of the lineup today with a strained groin and it might be a few days before he and his majors-leading .420 batting average will get back in.

The Braves are 0-5 this season without Jones in the lineup this season, and they?ll have to try to break that trend if they want to salvage a win out of this Phillies series today.

Jones aggravated the right quadriceps legging out a groundout in the seventh inning of Saturday night?s loss to the Phillies. Doctors told him afterward he had a slight tear in his right quadriceps muscle.:scared

?Doc Royster said I had a small tear in my quad,? Jones said Sunday morning. ?I guess you could call it a strain, but whenever you?ve got a small tear and there?s bleeding in there, it is what it is. It?s sore. I asked Doc timetable last night and he said ?You?re definitely not playing tomorrow, then there?s the off day. I?d think you could probably miss a day or two in Chicago and see how it feels.??

Jones first strained the quadriceps in early April playing in the cold weather of Colorado. He said it?s been a little sore ever since.:0corn

Jones had missed four games due to injury this year - three with back spasms and one with a groin strain. He got one other day off on Wednesday simply to rest. But the 36-year-old had managed to avoid much of the injury bugaboo that?s plagued him the last few years.

But now he becomes yet another injury issue in a clubhouse plagued by them seemingly every day.

?Nothing surprises me in this clubhouse anymore,? Jones said. ?It?s another bad blow.?

That damn groin in troublesome.

Over the years its the most injured groin in the history of baseball for Larry.

Braves' Jones out after batting practice injuryby Associated PressUpdated: June 13, 2008, 10:22 PM EST13

Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones,
was scratched from the lineup Friday night against the Angels after a freak accident during batting practice.

Jones fouled off a pitch, and the ball ricocheted off the crossbar at the top of the batting cage and struck him in the groin near his nut sac. The Braves announced that the five-time All-Star suffered a contusion and was taken for X-rays.
:scared

Jones leads Atlanta with 41 RBIs and 15 homers, including the 400th of his career on June 5. The Braves had lost all six of the games he had missed prior to the opener of their first-ever

Chipper reinjures quadriceps in ugly loss

By DAVID O'BRIEN
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 06/20/08

A new Braves homestand began Friday much like the last homestand ended -- with the Braves losing and Chipper Jones nursing an injured leg.

The third baseman reinjured his right quadriceps muscle late in a 10-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners at Turner Field, where the Braves dropped their fourth consecutive home game and probably lost their best hitter for a while.

"It's pretty bad," said Jones, describing an egg-sized knot on his right thigh, where he partially torn the quadriceps June 7. "It got to the point where I couldn't move out in the field [Friday].

"This is definitely the worst it's been. It's raised a lot higher than the other leg. I'll get back in there when it feels better. I missed a couple of days last time, and it's worse this time."

Jones left after seven innings, and the American League West cellar-dwelling Mariners scored five runs in the eighth to turn a close game into a series-opening rout before a crowd of 40,268.

Jones was hurt while scoring from second base on Omar Infante's fourth-inning single for a 1-0 lead. The pain worsened over the next few innings.:SIB :142smilie

He missed two starts June 8-10, and he's 6-for-32 since returning to the lineup, dropping his major league-best batting average from .420 to .390.

Larry gets hurt running the bases again. Geez I think this is about 10 times so far .

How does a professional athlete not take care of his legs better with a professional trainer available to him ?

This has been going on for 10 years with Larry.

Ty Cobb's record is safe.

Chipper not ready to play

By DAVID O'BRIEN
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 06/24/08

Braves slugger Cipper Jones said he made "slight progress" since Monday, but still wasn't close to being ready to play.

The third baseman has missed four starts since reinjuring his right quadriceps muscle. Manager Bobby Cox said he didn't expect Jones to play until the interleague series that starts Friday in Toronto, where he would be the designated hitter.

Larry misses 4 more games from an injury running the bases.

This is just unheard of in Major League Baseball.

Year after year its the same thing with Chips.

Just get me those 400ab's and we can get this jersey. I predict Chipper to hit around .375 when all is said an done. That ball to the face killed us in the ANA series where he went like 1-21.

its 500 at bats to be eligible for batting title

I think we already verified that one:0corn

I do have empathy for Larrys groin though.

The more he is out , the more chance of going into a extended slump when he gets back.

.................................................

I see two things

It makes it harder for him to win the title if he keeps missing games as he may not posts 500 at bats if he pulls a hamstring. Which is a basehit away with him running bases. Larry needs a pinch runner to run to first for him. I bet he would pay someone to do it.

And the second thing is the 500 at bat minimum makes it longer for him to go into a extended slump. Which he always does after he has a good first half. He lazyies out the last half.

I smell steaks and it smells green.

Jones has missed five straight starts with a strained right quadriceps. He hopes to serve as the designated hitter against Toronto. If all goes well, he could be ready to play defense next week.

Lets see five starts thats 20 at bats he missed maybe 22.

Now when he comes back he goes 4-25
and his average drops like a rock. :142smilie

Chipper likely headed to disabled list

By DAVID O'BRIEN
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 06/29/08

Chipper Jones said there was a "distinct" chance he would go on the 15-day disabled list for a lingering quadriceps injury.:SIB

"Bottom line, I'd miss nine or 10 [more] days that, quite frankly, I'm probably going to need" for the injury to heal, Jones said after Sunday's 1-0 loss against the Toronto Blue Jays, the eighth consecutive start he missed since reinjuring his partially torn quad muscle.

"About two days after I hurt it I had some improvement, but I haven't gotten any better since."

Jones' DL stint would be retroactive to Thursday, the day after he last pinch-hit. He would be eligible to come off July 11, the opener of a three-game series at San Diego leading into the All-Star break.

If the injury lingers, it could put Jones' All-Star Game participation in jeopardy.

While eager to play in the July 15 All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium, Jones might miss it.

"Make no bones about it, I would love to play in it," he said. "But if my body doesn't allow me, that's just a tough break."

"About 50 percent is all I can do [running], and I'm not any help for us at 50 percent," said Jones, who now wishes he'd gone on the DL immediately after reinjuring the quad muscle on June 20.

"We probably should have DL'd me right when it happened," he said. "I knew it was worse than the previous time it happened. But the competitive side of me wanted to keep playing. I've always been a quick healer, and I thought I'd be able to play in five or six days.":scared

" I've always been a quick healer " :142smilie :scared :mj07:

If Jones goes down again on the DL list after the ALl Star break there is no way he will meet the required 500 at bats.

Must stink to have such a weak groin.

I don't see him getting 500 AB's. He has played in 71 of his teams 83 games so far and has 254 AB's. Although, in a few of those 71 games, he only had 1 AB because of pinch hitting or leaving the game early. 12 games until All-Star break, so that would leave 67 games after the break. Just hope he doesn't go on DL and stay ther until the All-Star break. He may be back in the lineup tonight, so good luck on your wager.

The Braves managed only two hits and a run against Chris Sampson, who was making a spot start in place of Astros ace Roy Oswalt. They had four hits in the game and scored on Brian McCann's 15th homer of the year, a solo shot.

"It was pathetic, absolutely pathetic tonight," said Chipper Jones, who was 0-for-4 with a strikeout. "We got three baserunners tonight [outside of McCann]. That's pathetic against anybody

It was inevitable that Chipper Jones would eventually cool down some at the plate.

The problem for the Braves is, it has happened in a stretch when almost every other Braves hitter is also slumping ? and at a time when the team desperately needs to start winning more to improve its position in the standings as the July 31 trade deadline approaches.

"You've got to give some credit to those [pitchers]," said Jones, who had an infield single in Friday's 4-0 loss to San Diego, making him 1-for-14 during the current trip entering Saturday's game.:SIB

He was 17-for-73 (.233) in his past 22 games, dropping the All-Star third baseman's average from .420 to .373.

Chipper, hurt but Braves beat Marlins

By DAVID O'BRIEN
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 07/23/08

Miami ? The Braves got a victory they desperately needed Wednesday, but they can only hope they didn't pay a severe cost.

Chipper Jones and Tim Hudson, their best hitter and best pitcher, each was injured during the Braves' 9-4 win against Florida at Dolphin Stadium, overshadowing a four-hit, three-RBI performance by rookie Gregor Blanco.

Jones strained his left hamstring crossing first base on a fourth-inning groundout, :SIB :scared

"We'll see how Chipper is," said manager Bobby Cox,

Jones will be reevaluated Friday before the Braves open a weekend series at Philadelphia. He said he hoped to miss only a "couple of games," but couldn't rule out a stint on the disabled list.:SIB

"It's sore right now," he said. "I don't know what the timetable's going to be. Hamstrings are a little more delicate than quads or groins.":SIB

Jones gave the Braves another care when the major-league hitting leader (.369) grabbed his leg after crossing first base on a groundout in the fourth inning.:SIB

Jones, 36, hobbled off with assistance from Braves trainer Jeff Porter.

He has been plagued by injuries in the past four seasons, but has stayed off the DL this season and played 89 of 101 games despite nagging injuries including a partial tear of the right quadriceps, back spasms and a right-groin strain.

He had six DL stints during the 2004-07 seasons, including one for a strained right hamstring in 2004.
