I know it varies, but what's a ballpark price for an in-ground sprinkler system, 0.5 acre? Would I be correct to assume 3-5k?

Thanks

Dave:

We did ours (WI) - about 1.0 acre covered - for about 4K - and that was 5 years ago. We paid a guy cash to do it - saved a little bit that way.

It all really comes down to how many heads you need, and the quality of head you go with. Don't scrimp on head quality - well worth the better ones IMHO.

The only real cost to it after install is getting the lines blown out in the winter (which you won't have to do if you like in a southern location)

Hope this helps

i paid 5k for 1 acre. make sure you get a separate water meter for the system but the installer will prob tell you to. my guy comes out in october and clears the system out and back in march to start it back up. he charges 75 bucks a year for that service.

how many sprinkler heads would that include for one acre ?

It gives complete coverage ?

Or you just concentrate on certain areas ?

Next house I hope to have one

Thanks guys I appreciate it. The previous owners let the yard go to shit so mostly have dirt left. I'm thinking I'll have to have the sprinkler system put in and then sod it in the fall/spring.

If you have a sprinker system, you don't need sod. Seed creates a deeper root system, and a better lawn.

We built a new house and seeded - and it turned out wonderfully.

Another point - if possible, it is best to have a well - we are in the country, so have no choice. But then the water cost doesn't kill ya - and nobody can place water restrictions as to when/how much you can water.

Agree with Mags on both points. If you've got the sprinkler system, just kill off everything in late Aug or Early Sept with Round-Up and start over. After everything is dead, mow it down to where you're almost touch dirt, aerate it real good(I'd go over it at least 3 or 4 times). If possible, rent a slit-seeder and put out your seed that way. If no slit-seeder, just distribute the seed with a spreader(don't hold back). Follow that up with fertilizer(some mix both at the beginning, not me) and then water like a mother. A few weeks later, it'll be the most beautiful thing you've ever seen(Ok, that may be exagerated).

Drill for your own well if you can.

Good luck. Let us know how it turns out.

Of course, you can hire someone to do the seeding for you... a lot more expensive - but it's a lot easier.....

I got a quote and the guy said he charges 300 per zone and my house needed 5 zones...
