I have painted aircraft and aluminum before using Imron and Alumagrip paints with accelerator, reducer and such but this time is different. I am painting football helmets.

I have previously wetsanded them all and used a ppg product to shoot them and have them clear coated at a local body shop that sponsored our team. Well they have moved and am stuck doing it myself.

My question is this. I have been told that their is a product that I can spray onto the plastic helmet shell that will make a one stage paint adhere to the plastic. I have no experience with this and has anyone any idea what i am talking about?

Is there such a thing as one stage paint that doesn't have to be clear coated and what psi does it have to be shot at?

The original paint is probably a plural component polyurethane that the general public is unable to purchase, nor would they have the equipment to apply the product properly. Polyurethane is very durable, impact resistant, and retains it gloss (shinyness). Its typically provides several years of satisfaction.

I have painted plastic parts before and when I went to get the paint I just told the counter guy that I was painting plastic and that he needed to add a "FLEX AGENT" to the mix.

I have painted dirt bike and atv fenders this way and it worked great.

That is what I am being told that you have to add a flexor to the paint and that the PPG products can be thinned to increase shine and such but I don't think I am getting out of the sanding cleaning and tack clothing so I might as well do it right. I think a copolymer paint like Jack (6-5) suggested may have a special pin requirement like gelcoat on a boat.

Morris, Jack, Slink and Handi, I appreciate any help thanks.

FDC ther is no need to spray anything on those helmets if they have already been painted. just wet sand them with 800, wipe them down with a cleaner, and paint them. you can use a single stage paint or base and clear. there is no need to spray them with anything else. but if they were raw plastic i would use an adhesion promoter. I would use a ppg product called esss or fdgh. you can find that at any ppg shop. After you have painted them you can then wet sand them with 1500 and finish with 2000, and then buff if you want. I would spray it at 25 to 30 pounds of air pressure at the gun. but all guns are different. Any more qustions let me know.
