Guitar Player Magazine had a poll for their 100 greatest guitar solos magazine. Several surprises, including a M.Jackson tune (I know--Van Halen, but certainly not his best work). Some surprises, too, by what was left off.

For starters, no UFO. No Michael Schenker appearance at all.

Check out this deadly track if you haven't: from 1974's Phenomenon:

UFO-Rock Bottom

The following guy was excluded, too. Total freak but can majorly play. Covers alll styles, too. The following instrumental is totally how I like my blues. Played for a friend and he told me "sounds like Pink Floyd." Sorta Gilmour-esque but a totally original piece. I actually appreciate it more with further listens. Love it. Off a disc called Giant Robot. He's on two discs by that name but just score via Limestooges if it works for you.

Buckethead-Mrs. Beasley

WTF...might as well include one more. Was #21 on GP Mag's 100 greatest but contains, perhaps, my fave solo of all (app.30,000 track catalog, just including rock n' roll). Cool drum intro, too, but the guitar solo within is perfect.

Pink Floyd-Time

Certainly one of my all-time faves.
Immaculate.

Enjoy

Got to include one more for today. Besides the Band of Gypsies version of Machine Gun, this is probably my fave piece by this guitar man. Very modern sounding, even today, sorta bordering on progressive rock:

Jimi-Pali Gap

Might be the fall that I had as a small child but I'm getting more confident in my BB mistakes for Thursday.
Hendrix bless any non-negative Thursday!

May you also survive.
Or at least consumate an epiphany from the collected wisdom of the strings within.

Worth a shot.
Ain't they all?

Sixty freakin' hits?
My "dumb question #1369" thread invited more captivity.
Perhaps y'all have different tastes in music.

At least check out the Floyd piece for a spiritual experience.
The Buckethead instrumental may further reward those seeking string appeasement.

I don't reach 100 hits by 6:13 and I'm jumping out your window.

to me slash will always be best becuase i grew up on him. I know there are better, and real guitar afficianados might not think hes so hot, but he fit my musical tastes and fck it attitude the best during my teenage years. GNR is still A-One in my book.

Did watch doyle bramhall live at the great wall of china last night and was impressed. Can't say I know too much about guitarists, but I did enjoy this a lot.

You don't have to jump off a cliff now.

shamrock, no bullock...sorts sounds familiar but my memory is trash.:weed: Usually it works for music stuff.

Anyway, the list WAS available at their website.
I'll try to find a link and post it if possible.
Stairway to Heaven was listed #1.
Decent solo within but not akin to those listed above, IMO.

The magazine's site appears to have taken down the list (was about 4-6 years ago, if memory serves:weed: ).

Do a search for "100 greatest guitar solos" and you can find a bunch.

Here's one list that, surprisingly, does recognize Buckethead's contributions:

http://www.nutsie.com/digitaldreamdoor/100 Greatest Rock Guitar Solos/1689487

They list Comfortably Numb #1, which GP mag had at #4, I'm pretty sure. When you open the page they actually play a track at the site. Coincidentally they got Buckethead's Unrestrained Growth playing for me now.

The following is the page I got searching "100 greatest guitar solos":

http://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt...=yfp-t-501&ei=UTF-8&fp_ip=CA&rd=r1&meta=vc=ca

Like I say, lots of lists. Be some crossover but probably originals on each one. I might have a gander at some to maybe find a hidden treasure that I still need. Haven't done a download session in a while.

Here's a beauty you may not have heard:

Funkadelic-Maggot Brain

Guitarist is Eddie Hazel.
Some cool live versions available. Above is the studio track.

First heard this track about 8-9 years ago when I heard it performed by Gov't Mule. They're worth checking out, too--couple ex-Allman Brothers dudes. Warren Haynes is vocals and guitar. Track Mother Earth is phenomenal.

Found some live Mule:

Gov't Mule-Mother Earth

Warren Haynes on guitar.
Guys are pretty cool live.
They cover EVERYTHING. Old, new, borrow, blue.
As long as it rocks.
Heavy blues.

Funny shit I'm listening to the Mule now :scared
Love the Mule, Warren Haynes is one of the hardest working dude in the music industry.
Going to see him & the brothers next week :00hour

He's great live.
Saw them do a killer version of Monkey Hill (one of my faves by them) that cut into the guitar riffs from the Beatles I Want You...was mindblowing. The cloud of smoke in the auditorium was intoxicating. I think. Contributed to the barrage myself. Cool thing about their shows is it's mostly 30's-50's people--not too many teens or young-20's into their straight-forward in-your-face rockin' style. Game Face is another standout track. Self-titled disc and Dose are the best, IMO.

Love the guitar intro, about 1:15 worth, of the following track. Standout piece all-round. Physical Graffiti would make my top 5 discs list:

Led Zeppelin-The Rover (studio)
