yup,

think Harry Kalas rates way way higher myself....also agree with Ray Scott.

I couldnt agree with you more....Kalas is one of the best ever. Ive heard him call hundreds and hundreds of Phillies games and I still love hearing him call home runs. And I'm not even a Phillies fan!

Also, how is Gus Johnson not on this list?

My favorite current announcer, but he's really only emerged in the last few years.

One guy I've always liked was Joel Meyers. He did NFL radio games for Westwood One, and also did Big 12 games for FSN. Both within the past few seasons. Not sure where he's at now.

You have got to be kidding. One of the all-time greats.

I've lived in L.A. and listened to Scully. He tells boring stories one after another, never comes up for air. His breath is like a conveyer belt for boxes of boring. He's a one-man three-man booth. He's utterly unable to convey drama and lacks the wit to shut up and let the game talk. I honestly would prefer a straightforwardly stupid loudmouth like Dan Dierdorf and McCarver used to be to a professional blatherman like Scully.

keep an eye out for MATT VASGERSIAN. Used to be the local San Diego Padres announcer but was recently hired by the new MLB Network and also does Fx Sports games. Funny as hell and calls a good game.

Joe Morgan is awful.

some of you guys are mixing in play by play announcers with analysts.....vin scully is a play by play announcer

That may be his job description but since he works alone he does both jobs. And if you listen to him, he's far mor a bloviator than the game guy. I assume he works alone because there's simply not enough air left in the room for a partner.

while a guy like raftery & packer are analysts....

Raftery is an analist. Listen to his decriptions and tell me he's not a closet case. His descriptions and figures are always, and I mean always, sexual.

Good guys:

Bob Uecker - excellent.

Al Hrbosky (sp) - Cardinals analyst. Right mix of stories, analysis and shutting up.

Steve Stone - tells you what's going to happen before it happens.

my all time favorite announcer for baseball was mel allen...

my all time favorite announcer on radio for football was a guy named marty glickman....

my all time favorite football announcer was ray scott or keith jackson or al michaels....

my all time favorite basketball announcer was marv albert...

is an analyst/color guy not also a sportscaster? The title is top 50 sportscasters, right? Several on this list are color guys/analysts.

To each his own. I could set and listen to Vin with my eyes closed and have him paint the picture.

every time i see this topic one name comes to mind immediately.

i didn't expect to see chuck thompson on the list because he was a local guy for the orioles and colts. if he was in the national spotlight he would be WAY up on the list, probably number one ;)

most that have heard him would agree.

No Chic Hearn (sic?). And, not that he was great, but surprised Dizzy Dean hasn't been mentioned, he's very noteable, at least.

I can do without Harry Carey, drunk or sober. The worst, IMO. & Phil Rizzuto, nothing but a stooge.

Agree with Vin Scully, the absolute best, so good, he's his own analyst.

Joe Morgan, please. Drop him 40 more notches

Chick is #21. Could be much higher in my opinion.

My parents were one of the first in the neighbourhood to have a satelite dish when I was younger. I remember having to go to bed, and then sneaking back out to watch the Laker games on Prime Ticket after everyone else had gone to bed.

Believe me, I was the only guy in small town Ontario, Canada who knew who Chick Hearn was in the seventh grade, but I loved that guy.
