Sometimes on a slow day (this is a slow day) something will run thru my head I haven't thought of in years. In this case it was Ann (not her real name). Now Ann was a travil agent and I used to do a lot of traveling, For about six or seven years Ann took care of my plane tickets, hotel, car etc. Ann was an attractive,35 to 40 year old, slightly over-weight woman who if you had met and talked to at a party you might have guessed she was a school teacher. A very conservative one at that. The few times we had time to talk when she delivered my tickets would be about her family. Usually her neices and nephews (I don't think she had any children of her own) who she was very proud of. One was in the Olympics, one was a professional skater and one had just graduated from high school and had an academic scholarship to one of the top east coast schools. It was the week after the Kentucky Derby and Ann had brought me some tickets for one of my trips. She sat down in the chair accross from my desk and said "Joe, I just got back from the derby and my horse came in". "your horse came in?" I replied. "Yes and it paid 30 to 1" I kinda smiled "how much did you have bet"?. I figured a 2 dollar ticket or maybe even 5. She replied "2500". "You.....bet.....2500 dollars......on a 30 to 1 shot at the Kentucky Derby?" This is after I had almost fallen out of my chair. "I always bet $2500, last year I only won 10,000". "Last year, how long have you been going" I asked. "Almost all my life, my family has had a box at Churchhill Downs for over fifty years and I've been around horse racing all my life"

I would have bet $2500 that she had never bet on anything, ever. Just proves you never know.

Good luck everyone

my grandma was a sweet old lady who's only strange behaviour was to bet the wrestling matches down here where she transformed into a terrible screaming FAN (true story);)

Good story Joe. It reminds me of one. I was working with this guy about 4 years. We BS about anything and everything sports whatever. One day we were outside alone and he tells me Ray, I am stuck about 30K betting. I almost passed out. He did not look the type at all. Your right you never know.

That is a great story and so true. Reminds me of the time when I was in my early 20's and had gone to Taco Bell for lunch. I was dressed in a full business suit, etc... I had a copy of an NFL magazine which I was going to read at lunch. A guy in line looked me, shocked, and says, "uh, you don't really look the type to be reading that magazine. Wow." It was really funny.

Thanks Joe, it reminds me of a few people on this board.

1) Flashing around what you play in dollar amounts just isn't right on a public board.

2) Most of the members here that post there amounts really do bet those amounts. Maybe I am guillible.

3) Two things wrong with this: The beginner trying to follow instead of doing the work will most likely end up in deep debt. The other that no one ever talks about - IRS. The IRS has full-time employees watching betting sights. Do you document everything? You need to.

4) I, like most, use units. Very easy for every type of sports investor. From $5 to $5000.

Winning is a very, very slow grind at times, gl!

KC, can you elaborate about your statement that the IRS has people monitoring gambling sites? Are you talking about gambling forums like this one, or the sportsbooks? And how would they know how much a player has won?And what do you mean by keeping track of everything? Thanks

i don't think so. even i have never been contacted by the IRS regarding anything to do with this site and it's not too hard to find out who i am, where i live, and my phone number. it's impossible for them to find out who you are or anybody else around here.
