Tuesday May 19, 2009..........3 days from the last day of school of her senior year, my 18 year old daughter Lindsey has been diagnosed with leukemia. No details yet as final bone marrow results are not back yet. Completely healthy heading into this weekend sent me a text from her job saying she had a 102 fever. Came home took it again, same. Figured flu, rest and plenty of liquids be good to go by tuesday. Let her stay home from school monday and go to doctor hoping to get her better for this weekend (graduation party). Took tests (Swine Flu, mono, strep, etc....) all negative. Told her go home, rest and hydrate. If fever gets worse, go to ER later. By 11 monday night, fever is 104.2 Take her to ER still expecting flu......rest and hydrate. Took more tests can't find anything bu notice white blood cells are very low. 1300 as opposed to normal of 5000-10000. They decide to admit her to check things out. Still nothing registering with me as it's 6:00 am and I've been up 24 hours. Regular doc, infectuous disease doc and blood doc show up. Regular doc just asks questions. About 4:00 infectuous disease doc says can't find anything from the blood work. I thought that was good news but opposite was true, I just didn't know it yet. Blood doc lays out several different scenarios, leukemia being one of them. Kinda downplays everything but says he has good idea based on numbers but won't say for sure until tests confirm. I see him still in hall a few minutes later so I decide to see if he will at least give me his opinion. Without hesitation he looks me in the eye and says "it's leukemia". You could hit me across the face with a 2x4 and it would have hurt less.Total devastation! She is my only child. Sorry so long but just had to let it out.

I know I'm not a regular poster but I am here reading everyday. This is one of my favorite websites and even though I don't personally know any of you (except ndnfan) I feel like I do with all the pictures and stories and everything else I have seen here. Please keep Lindsey in your prayers and hope for a good outcome.

Hang in there, once shock wears off you can tackle this.

And agree, horrible day, can't get much worse then that, puts life in perspective that's for sure.

i know there are different kinds of leukemia, but i always thought some leukemias were very treatable.....

had a friend who`s wife developed leukemia around 10 years ago and she`s doing fine....she`s around 50...

i wouldn`t panic just yet.....the little i know about it,seems that some people do o.k. after getting floored with the diagnosis...

see what the doctors say before you make yourself sick with worry..

fingers and toes crossed...and prayers for your pride and joy...:mj09:

I can definitely relate to the being hit with a 2x4 feeling when less than a year ago, my mother had to tell me (and my brothers) that a tumor was found in her intestine........tough time to go through.

The only advice I can think to give you at the moment is to scour the net for leukemia support groups and message boards. There many families out there in the same situation. See what they have done, and get as much knowledge and advice as you can. At the very least it will help you feel a little more in control.
Here is one board: http://www.healthboards.com/boards/forumdisplay.php?f=25&jump=Jump+to+Board
There is also cancercompass.com and the webmd boards....there is a ton of them.
BTW, 5 weeks ago, my mother got to welcome another grandchild (my brother+wife) into the world, and is doing well all things considered.
KEEP US UPDATED!!!!!!!
