Feds spike voter citizenship checks in Georgia

By SHANNON McCAFFREY, The Associated Press 4:09 p.m. June 1, 2009

ATLANTA ? The Justice Department has rejected Georgia's system of using Social Security numbers and driver's license data to check whether prospective voters are citizens, a process that was a subject of a federal lawsuit in the weeks leading up to November's election.

In a letter released on Monday, the Justice Department said the state's voter verification program is frequently inaccurate and has a "discriminatory effect" on minority voters. The decision means Georgia must halt the citizenship checks, although the state can still ask the Justice Department to reconsider, according to the letter and to the Georgia secretary of state's office.

Have stated my position on this previously - I don't think needing to show proof of citizenship is too much to ask for a voter to cast a vote in this country. Although I do understand that a database of registered voters could be enough, I don't think that guarantees (is anything guaranteed anymore?) that the person voting is who they say they are, for one thing. Although I don't think this is specifically a problem coming from "da base," I do think whatever steps we can take to ensure legal voting should be taken.

It just doesn't make sense to me that in a general sense that it is disenfranchising for people to prove their citizenship or that they are who they are to vote. I would expect that from a voting process, actually. And if someone wants to vote, they should make it a priority at some point to follow the rules to allow them to vote. There certainly are ways to make it happen in this country.

I'll check what ever box you want me to on this one.. Point : this is a smoke screen issue. In the grand skeem of things, does this really matter / facing what we are as a Country. Non citizens voting , has not put us in this place & time in American history ???? Citizens not voting has. Stuff like this, is just stuff... Who with a RIGHT mind, trying to progress / live/ survive cares about this ? Does anybody know what time it is ? Time to wake up America !` Most of this Stuff ; just Bull Shit !`

Whatever happened to the people that went from their home states to VOTE in the state of OHIO?

Remember, they probably had to use the Diebold machines in Ohio, so that surely canceled out their votes. At least the ones you are worried about, that is...

Chad, all cheating should be prosecuted, I don't care what party they're in, just think it's funny how these stories disappear.

Don't you ever get tired of your constant childish patronizing bullshit?

Nope--You need constant reminder of that you are part of Da Base--When you and rest voted for "change" redistribution of wealth-- etc
-you acknowledged that you identified with and have same convictions when you voted

You all knew you were voting for--
-- taking from the responsible and giving to the irresponsible
--massive gov spending on social programs
--increased taxation on anything that moves
(10% Fed sales tax-gas tax-health benefits tax-internet sales tax) just a few on drawing board.
--pandering to illegals
--terrorist rights
--felons rights

--I'd be a little embarrassed being lumped in with the base if I was you too--considering geographical make up that your values/convictions mirror.

--but consider this liberals-illegals-terrorists-and welfare recipients have been only ones doing the ole :00hour since "the change"

So get used to your tag "DA BASE" --you earned it only thing I will add one year from now is "Yes You Did" as I told following election results.

Got a feeling the liberal view of their savior-

quick view

Your "Da Base" is non-sensical horshit that somehow makes you feel better about yourself.

Just for fun, DTB, is it your opinion that the majority of people who voted for Obama do not have a high school diploma? A simple yes or no will do.

Gee Jabbers--what part of city you live in to think that over half population in U.S. don't graduate from high school:cool:

I can give % of people that didn't graduate- that voted for Gumby with--one clarifcation--its not my opinion--its CNN election exit poll.

Those with no high school voted
63% for Gumby--35% Mac

--and in case income is your next question
those making less than $15,000
73% Gumby--25% Mac

Good lord this is challenging for you. Here we go again.

Here are the CNN numbers by education -

Total Obama McCain Other/No Answer
No High School (4%) 63% 35% 2%
H.S. Graduate (20%) 52% 46% 2%
Some College (31%) 51% 47% 2%
College Graduate (28%) 50% 48% 2%
Postgraduate (17%) 58% 40% 2%

Only 4% of the voting population is not a high school graduate, of which Obama won 63%.

The remaining 96% of the voting population has a high school degree or better.

Obama won in every other educational demographic.

The vast majority of voters who voted for Obama have a high school degree or better. Do I really need to explain these numbers to you further?

Will you please, for once, admit that you are full of shit when you say that the "majority of Obama voters have no high school education"?

What a complete joke. If you need me to, I will do my best to help you understand that winning 63% of 4% of the voting population compared to all other categories does not translate to "majority of Obama voters have no high school education".

It really is embarrassing to see you make such an ass of yourself with this misunderstanding of basic statistics. As soon as you are able to grasp this, we can break down the economic demographics.

Like many hard-line Republicans, he's frightened because he knows "Da Base" now represents 180 million Americans and because only 21% of Americans now call themselves "Republican".

How many times has this been explained to him Jabbers? At this point, the only question that remains unanswered is... Is he incapable of understanding this or just unwilling to accept it?

BTW, during the civil war, my great great grandfather helped Sherman burn most of the south. God bless him!
