is that a recorder/player or just a player?...

have you tried adjusting the contrast(can you do that with a dvd player?)...

i would consider returning it and getting a panasonic recorder/player...

i`ve had terrible luck with toshiba...

Really? I thought Toshiba was the quality stock now? The contrast only adjustable on TV. It's just player.

Should be a setting to control "Black levels".

If not - look for settings like "Home Theater Mode" or "Sports Mode" or "Custom Mode".

My TV has drop down menus with sports mode, concert mode, custom mode, but don't see it on D vd

i have 2 panasonic recorders.....i believe i`ve purchsed one pre-recorded dvd in my life....never rented one..

it upconverts to "near" hi -def quality(i know i`ll get grief on here for saying that)...

what i`m saying is that the recordings are high quality...and the sound is great...

i `ve just recorded righteous kill and hellboyII(we`re all ron perlman fans..lol)....

keep playin with it brother...

on my t.v.(most new t.v.`s, i would think) i use different inputs for watching t.v. and videos...and i have them adjusted separately....i just push a button and it takes me from "t.v." to "dvd" and the separate settings are already set for optimum picture and sound according to what i prefer..........

panasonic,my brother...:thumb:

btw..one of the reasons i say panasonic is because i originally bought a sony recorder to go with my sony t.v....but,the sony blocked me from copying so many movies and shows that it was ridiculous....

panasonic doesn`t have that kind of arduous copyright blocking feature...
