My daughter is now a almost 2 and totally loves dogs. Our babysitter has one, my dad has one and she just loves them. Well we recently fenced our back yard, so the timing seems right.

The dog me and my wife want is Weimaraner.

Has anyone had an experience with this breed, and what is the best way to locate a quality breeder?

We had one

We had one

And it was really good with other people and children. However, it was a female and it wa sort of agressive towards our other 2 golden retrievers and it didn't get along with the neighbors pets, killed cats and squirrels, etc. lol....

It was raised on a lake house where we lived which had about 5 acres of land so it could roam freely and then taken to a smaller setting when my parents moved inot town which might explain its agressiveness. However, I will STRESS it was always very friendly toward other people and kids and did make a good watch dog. We used it for hunting as well and it was good at pointing pheasant, ducks, etc. A very compassionate dog.

Weimaraners are fast and powerful dogs, but are also suitable home animals given appropriate training. From adolescence, a Weimaraner requires extensive exercise in keeping with an energetic hunting dog. No walk is too far, and they will appreciate games and play in addition. An active owner is more likely to provide the vigorous exercising, games, or running that this breed needs. Weimaraners are high-strung and easily excitable, requiring appropriate training to learn how to calm them and to help them learn to control their behavior. Owners need patience, as this breed is particularly rambunctious during the first year and a half of its life. Like many breeds, untrained and unconfined young dogs often create their own diversions when left alone, such as chewing house quarters and furniture. It should never be forgotten that the Weimaraner is a hunting dog and therefore has a strong, instinctive prey drive. Weimaraners will tolerate cats, as long as they are introduced to the cats as puppies, and many will chase and frequently kill almost any small animal that enters their garden or backyard. In rural areas, most Weimaraners will not hesitate to chase deer or sheep. However, with good training, these instincts can be curtailed to some degree.

This is a breed that definitely needs obedience training to control his rambunctious nature. Owners should definitely have a crate for the new puppy for help in housetraining and to protect furniture and woodwork from puppy teeth when the little rascal cannot be watched. Puppy classes or control exercises at home are essential for the Weimaraner the moment he enters the family. He must be taught that all members of the family are to be obeyed. Training methods must be gentle and firm, for harsh treatment will sour his attitude.

my early childhood that I do not remember was spent with a Weimeraner in the house. his name was "Spook" (nickname for the breed is gray ghost I think). There's lots of pictures of me draped all over him as a 2 and 3 year old, pulling his ears, etc. He was oversized and weighed over 100 pounds. He never bit me. Mom and dad still talk about what a great dog he was and how smart he was. Good choice I think.

Since I've been married (30 yrs.), we've had four dogs. Two were pure breds and two were mixed breeds and all were house dogs. We've loved them all equally, but the two mixed breeds were the smartest and healthiest of the four. One we rescued from the street, and she's been the sweetest and most loving dog you could ever want. She KNOWS we saved her from a desperate situation. If you would consider adopting a dog from a shelter or a rescue operation, you will be rewarded beyond all expectation. Good fortune in whatever you decide to do.

toastonastick.....had the chance of speaking to some owners when I used to be at the park with Jakey. The most common thing they had to say was about how much exercise their dog's needed. One owner had told me because he doesn't have the time he wouldn't choose a Weimeraner again.

i think a huge thing i would look at is hair. this dog looks like it may shedd a lot but im not sure. I had a pug living here and i loved the thing to death but once it jumps on your chest your shirt is full of hair. Hair gets everywhere and sometimes becomes a problem. Just a thought.

Thanks for the replies!

Supposedly these dogs do not shed much at all, that was one of the big factors.

I have read that they need lots of excersise, and don't see that as a problem for our family. My problem with getting an older dog is that we have a cat. And I've been told to get a puppy adapt to the cat, where older dogs can have problems.
