Preview: Packers (6-4) at Lions (2-8)
Date: November 26, 2009 12:30 PM EDT

In the thick of the NFC playoff race, the Green Bay Packers are preparing to play the rest of the season without two stalwarts on their formidable defense.

While the Detroit Lions don't have the same postseason aspirations, they might have to play this Thanksgiving Day game without the reigning NFC player of the week.

The banged-up Packers will rely on a makeshift defense Thursday when they try to continue their dominance over a Lions team that will likely be without Matthew Stafford, who was injured while leading his team to exciting comeback win last week.

Green Bay (6-4) ranks first in the NFL in total defense, allowing an average of 295.8 yards, but that unit took two major hits when cornerback Al Harris and linebacker Aaron Kampman were hurt on separate plays in the second half of Sunday's 30-24 win over San Francisco.

Without those two veterans in the lineup, the Packers struggled to shut down the 49ers, allowing 21 second-half points.

Green Bay is going to have to get accustomed to playing without Harris and Kampman, as coach Mike McCarthy said Monday that both will have season-ending knee surgery.

"Not seeing '74' and '31' in the huddle, it's going to be different,' McCarthy said. "It's a challenge to our players, they're going to have to step up and get ready in a short week for Detroit.'

McCarthy said Harris, a standout player known for his physical coverage, will be replaced by No. 3 cornerback Tramon Williams while seventh-round rookie Brad Jones will likely take Williams' place.

Green Bay's makeshift defense will likely not have to face Stafford, who dislocated his left shoulder in Sunday's 38-37 win over Cleveland, which snapped the Lions' six-game losing streak.

"It's unlikely that he's going to play, but we'll see," Detroit coach Jim Schwartz said. "It's a deal if it gets better in a couple of days and it's not as painful, he'll be able to get out there."

It would be a big blow for the Lions (2-8) if Stafford couldn't play, considering the No. 1 pick of this year's draft is coming off the best performance of his young career. Stafford set an NFL rookie passing record with 422 yards Sunday and became the youngest player to throw five touchdowns in a game.

The fifth TD was a game-tying 1-yard pass to Brandon Pettigrew with no time left on the clock. Jason Hanson's extra point gave Detroit the win.

The Lions got that untimed play because Cleveland safety Hank Poteat was called for pass interference in the end zone when Stafford heaved a desperation attempt. Stafford was crushed beneath a defender after throwing that ball and came to the sideline with the shoulder injury, but he was able to return because the Browns stopped the game with a timeout. Daunte Culpepper briefly took the field in Stafford's place but never had to take a snap.

Culpepper would likely make his third start of the season if Stafford can't go. The 11-year veteran made two starts when Stafford was out earlier this year with a right knee injury, including a 26-0 loss at Green Bay on Oct. 18, Detroit's eighth straight loss in the series. Culpepper was 6 of 14 for 48 yards with one interception in that game.

Dynamic wide receiver Calvin Johnson also missed the first meeting with the Packers because of hand and knee injuries and could miss this contest for the same reasons.

Johnson, who had a career-best 161 yards receiving and a 75-yard TD Sunday, has missed two games this year because of these nagging injuries.

Without Stafford and Johnson, the Lions could have a hard time ending their recent Thanksgiving Day woes.

Detroit has been outscored by an average of 23.4 points in losing its last five Thanksgiving Day games since defeating the Packers 22-14 on Nov. 27, 2003. The Lions lost to Tennessee 47-10 last Thanksgiving.

While Detroit's offense might be missing some key components, Green Bay's offense is rolling after racking up a season-best 484 yards Sunday.

Led by Aaron Rodgers, who completed 32 of 45 passes for 344 yards with two touchdowns against the 49ers, the Packers are fourth in the NFL in total offense, averaging 403.4 yards, and eighth in scoring offense, averaging 26.2 points.

Green Bay shouldn't have much trouble moving the ball against a Detroit team that ranks last in scoring defense (30.1) and 31st in total defense (401.9).

Rodgers threw for 358 yards with two touchdowns and one pick against the Lions last month while Ryan Grant rushed for 90 yards

In three career games against Detroit, Rodgers has passed for 994 yards with eight touchdowns and one interception.

NFL Preview - Oakland (3-7) at Dallas (7-3)

NFL Preview - Oakland (3-7) at Dallas (7-3)

NFL Preview - Oakland (3-7) at Dallas (7-3)

The Dallas Cowboys have played some decidedly unspectacular football over the past two weeks. If recent history is any indication, however, Wade Phillips' club will find their antidote when the Oakland Raiders visit Big D for the Cowboys' traditional Thanksgiving Day contest.

The Cowboys have won four of their last five on Thanksgiving, including three straight, and have outscored their opponents by a composite of 106-22 over the last three years. Dallas routed Seattle, 34-9, on the holiday last year, and also has decisive victories over the Jets (34-3) and Buccaneers (38-10) to serve as positive recent reference points.

Such a dominating performance would be welcomed for Dallas on Thursday, in the wake of back-to-back listless efforts against the Packers (a 17-7 loss) and Redskins (a 7-6 win), games in which the Cowboys failed to score a single point over the first three quarters.

When hated Washington visited last week, Dallas needed a touchdown pass from Tony Romo to Patrick Crayton with less than three minutes to play to come up with the one-point win.

Romo, who was playing through a back injury suffered when trying to make a tackle on an interception earlier in the game, was a pedestrian 15-of-27 for 158 yards with the TD and pick for a team that was just 3-of-11 on third-down conversions.

The Dallas defense was a bigger credit to the cause but still allowed 140 yards on 20 touches to Washington third-string running back Rock Cartwright.

Despite the recent sketchy play, the Cowboys (7-3) remain in sole possession of first place in the NFC East, one game ahead of the close-pursuing Eagles (6-4) and Giants (6-4) and four clear of the Redskins (3-7).

The visiting Raiders also come off a narrow Week 11 victory that required late heroics, though the degree of difficulty in Oakland's triumph was considerably more impressive than that of Dallas.

Against the AFC North-leading Cincinnati Bengals, a two-loss team that had just come of impressive back-to-back wins over the Ravens and Steelers, Oakland rallied late to win, 20-17, and halt a three-game losing streak.

Making his first start as a Raider, journeyman Bruce Gradkowski completed 17- of-34 passes for 183 yards, two touchdowns, and just one interception in the victory, leading a gritty 11-play, 80-yard drive culminating in a 29-yard touchdown pass to Louis Murphy to tie the game at 17-17 in the final minute.

Moments later, after the Bengals' Andre Caldwell fumbled the ensuing kickoff, Sebastian Janikowski drilled a 33-yard field goal to lift Oakland to an upset that gave the team a head of steam heading into a difficult two-game road swing against the Cowboys and Steelers.

Oakland (3-7) enters Week 12 in a tie for third place in the AFC West along with Kansas City, and four full games behind the division-leading San Diego Chargers.

The Raiders last played on Thanksgiving in 1970, when they dropped a 28-14 decision at the Detroit Lions. Oakland is 3-2 all-time on the holiday, with their last such win coming in 1968 against the Bills.

The Cowboys' most recent Thanksgiving Day loss occurred in 2005, a 24-21 overtime decision against the Broncos.

SERIES HISTORY

Oakland has a 6-3 lead in its all-time regular season series against Dallas, and extended its win streak in the series to three with a 19-13 home win in the last meeting, in 2005. The Raiders are 3-0 in road games with the Cowboys all-time, and were 13-12 winners when they last visited Big D, in 1998. Dallas' last win in the series came in Oakland in 1995. The Raiders haven't lost a meaningful game in Dallas since 1962, when they dropped a decision to the Dallas Texans (now the Kansas City Chiefs) there.

The teams also met during the 2009 preseason, with the Raiders coming up a 31-10 winner on August 13th in Oakland.

Dallas head coach Wade Phillips is just 1-6 in his career against the Raiders, including 0-5 while with the Broncos (1993-94) and 1-1 while with the Bills (1998-2000). His total with Denver included a 42-24 loss to the then-Los Angeles Raiders in a 1993 AFC Wild Card matchup. The Raiders' Tom Cable will be meeting both Phillips and the Cowboys for the first time as a head man.

WHEN THE RAIDERS HAVE THE BALL

Gradkowski's play last week vindicated all of those who had been calling for the team to bench JaMarcus Russell for weeks, as the Toledo product doubled the Raiders' touchdown-pass output on the season from two to four, also completing 50 percent of his passes, which Russell failed to do four times in his nine starts. Gradkowski (346 passing yards, 2 TD, 3 INT) has experience against the Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day, having opened the Buccaneers' 38-10 loss to Dallas back in 2006. The then-rookie was 10-of-20 for 120 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions in that game. The quarterback's directive this week will be to get the ball into the hands of wideouts Murphy (17 receptions, 2 TD) and Chaz Schilens (5 receptions), along with trusty tight end Zach Miller (34 receptions, 2 TD). Miller led the Raiders with five catches for 65 yards and a touchdown against the Bengals. Oakland would also like to get its three-headed rushing monster of Michael Bush (377 rushing yards, 2 TD, 14 receptions), Darren McFadden (182 rushing yards, 1 TD, 10 receptions), and Justin Fargas (336 rushing yards, 2 TD, 13 receptions) untracked. The trio combined for 84 ground yards on 18 carries last week, with Fargas leading the way with eight totes for 32 yards. Despite last week's effort, the Raiders are last in the league in total offense (227.3 yards per game), scoring offense (10.8 points per game), passing offense (125 yards per game), completion percentage (48.3), touchdowns scored (9), touchdown passes (4), and fumbles lost (12).

While the Cowboys offense has sputtered, the team's defense has kept Dallas in the game in each of the past two weeks. Though the unit allowed plenty of yards between the 20s and had just one sack and one turnover against the Redskins, the Cowboys' ability to keep Washington out of the end zone for the entire day was the difference in the win. The strength of the Dallas defense is a pass rush, led by outside linebacker Demarcus Ware (39 tackles, 7 sacks), which has generated 25 sacks on the season. The pass rushing effort could be especially critical against the Raiders, as a defense that ranks just 20th in the league in passing yards allowed (229.3 per game) could be missing safety Ken Hamlin (ankle) and cornerback Mike Jenkins (elbow, head) due to injuries. The Cowboys are seventh in the league against the run (100.6 yards per game), with Jay Ratliff (26 tackles, 4 sacks) and Marcus Spears (14 tackles, 2 sacks) leading the charge up front and inside linebackers Keith Brooking (73 tackles, 3 sacks) and Bradie James (73 tackles, 1 sack) doing much of the cleanup behind them. Brooking and James had eight stops each against the Redskins last week. Dallas is tied for last in the league in takeaways (12) along with Washington.

WHEN THE COWBOYS HAVE THE BALL

Clearly, much of the focus on Thursday will be on a Dallas offense that has averaged 11.3 points over its past three games, on the heels of piling up a total of 75 in wins over the Falcons and Seahawks. Romo (2624 passing yards, 15 TD, 7 INT) must reclaim his chemistry with the receiving corps, which has seen top wideouts Miles Austin (35 receptions, 7 TD) and Roy Williams (24 receptions, 3 TD), along with tight end Jason Witten (54 receptions, 1 TD), be conspicuously silent. Austin hasn't crossed the 50-yard receiving plateau in his last three games, Witten in his last four, and the much-discussed Williams went without a grab for the second time this year last week. That said, Dallas might be better off going to a run-heavy approach against an Oakland defense that has given up its share of big plays this season. Running backs Marion Barber (572 rushing yards, 4 TD) and Felix Jones (353 rushing yards, 1 TD) combined for 148 yards on 30 combined carries last week (4.9 per rush), though Barber's lost fumble was concerning. The Cowboys o-line has surrendered 23 sacks of Romo this year, and will have to protect the former Pro Bowler well given his injury concerns on Thursday.

One Oakland player of whom Romo and the Cowboys will certainly be aware on Thursday is pass rusher Greg Ellis (21 tackles). Ellis, who recorded his team- leading fifth sack of the year against the Bengals last Sunday, posted 77 sacks as a member of the Cowboys from 1998 to 2008. Ellis will represent one major problem for Romo, and the other will be a secondary, led by cornerback Nnadmi Asomugha (24 tackles, 1 INT) and safety Tyvon Branch (81 tackles, 1 sack), which made life difficult for Carson Palmer and the Bengals receivers last week. Asomugha posted his first interception of the season in the win, while Branch had a huge day with 12 tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble. As mentioned, the Raiders have had some trouble against the run, including last week when Cincinnati piled up 177 ground yards in the absence of leading rusher Cedric Benson. The team's front, led by end Richard Seymour (30 tackles, 4 sacks), will have to be active against Barber and Jones at the point of attack, while linebackers Kirk Morrison (84 tackles) and Thomas Howard (58 tackles, 2 sacks) attempt to make plays in the next line of defense. Oakland is 30th in the NFL against the run (157.7 yards per game), last in the league in rushing touchdowns allowed (16), and is one of four NFL teams without a defensive or special teams touchdown this season (Browns, Jaguars, Redskins).

FANTASY FOCUS

With the possible exception of the tight end Miller, who always seems to contribute something to the proceedings, fantasy owners should still consider the Raiders to be more or less radioactive. None of the team's backs or receivers gets the kind of touches you'd want out of a starter, and the Dallas defense is solid to boot. If you're desperate to use a Raider, make it Janikowski, who has quietly had a solid season.

Romo has frustrated fantasy owners with his performances of the past couple of weeks, and though his back injury is concerning, it's a little too tempting to leave him on the bench against a hit-or-miss Raiders defense. The same goes for Barber and Jones, who could gash a soft Oakland front seven. Among the receiving corps, Austin and Williams are bound to wake up at some point, and though he's been invisible at times, this matchup has breakout potential for Witten. Dallas kicker Nick Folk is a decent play here despite a rough couple of weeks, and the Cowboys defense - which has played extremely well of late but been overshadowed by the struggling offense - should get the nod against Gradkowski and the Raider attack.

OVERALL ANALYSIS

It's difficult to put a finger on the Cowboys' offensive struggles of the past couple of weeks, but it seems unlikely that Dallas, with a bevy of talented weapons on offense and one of the best-regarded play-callers in the league in Jason Garrett, is going to be kept at bay much longer. The Raiders, who have some talent on defense but not quite enough of it, won't go lightly against Romo and company but figure to give up some big plays. On the other side of the ball, Gradkowski's late heroics last week partially masked the fact that the offense committed three turnovers and was just 4-of-11 on third-down, and there's little reason to expect the journeyman to have Oakland running up and down the field this week. Look for the Cowboys to continue their Thanksgiving Day dominance, and for Dallas to remain ahead of the posse in the NFC East for at least another week.

Predicted Outcome: Cowboys 31, Raiders 7

The NFC East-leading Dallas Cowboys are wondering what's going on with their offense.

The Cowboys expect a banged-up Tony Romo to play Thursday afternoon, but they could be without leading receiver Jason Witten when they host the Oakland Raiders for the first time in 11 years.

Dallas (7-3) has failed to score through the first three quarters of its last two games, losing 17-7 at Green Bay on Nov. 15 and winning 7-6 over Washington on Sunday.

It was determined that Romo was suffering from back problems in the aftermath of Sunday's win. The Cowboys feel he is improving and will start Thursday.

"We've already talked to Tony and he says he feels a lot better. .... He had a little bit of stiffness. He had quite a bit during the ballgame, but says he feels a lot better," coach Wade Phillips said.

Witten, who has a team-best 54 catches for 481 yards, will be a game-time decision Thursday after spraining his foot against the Redskins.

Romo has two touchdowns and two interceptions the last two games after having eight and one during the preceding four-game win streak. He completed 15 of 27 passes for 158 yards Sunday, capping a nine-play, 60-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown to Patrick Crayton with 2:41 left for the winning score.

The Cowboys, who lead Philadelphia and New York by one game in the East, still have the league's fifth-ranked offense. They'd like to see it get untracked.

"We know we've got to start picking it up. Not just for our fans, but for ourselves too," Crayton said. "It's going to be good for us to come out Thursday and be sharp and be crisp. It's got to look like we are really doing something out there."

Romo is 3-0 on Thanksgiving with 10 touchdowns, two interceptions and a 71.4 completion percentage.

Dallas will see a familiar face in Oakland defensive end Greg Ellis, who spent his first 11 seasons with the Cowboys. Ellis played outside linebacker the last two seasons before he was released by the Cowboys and decided to sign with the Raiders thanks to a convincing recruiting pitch by owner Al Davis.

"That's the game that Al Davis told me about when he first called me," Ellis said in the preseason. "He said, 'Greg, guess where we're going to be on Thanksgiving.' I said, 'Where?.' He said, 'We're going to be in Dallas playing your Dallas Cowboys.'"

Ellis has a team-high five sacks, including one of three on Carson Palmer in Sunday's 20-17 victory over Cincinnati.

Oakland (3-7) ended its three-game skid behind Bruce Gradkowski, who made his first start since Dec. 28 with Cleveland. Gradkowski finished an 80-yard drive by completing a tying 29-yard touchdown pass to rookie Louis Murphy with 33 seconds to go.

"I don't know that you can ask for a better closing drive than what he did there," coach Tom Cable said.

The Raiders' 20 points matched a season high, and the defense was grateful for the support.

"The defense isn't going to be perfect," cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha said. "There's going to be times when you give up two touchdowns or something. But you know that the offense is going to have your back, that type of thing. And they showed that."

Asomugha will be matched up with either Miles Austin or Roy Williams. Austin has team highs of 679 yards and seven receiving touchdowns.

While the emergence of Gradkowski leaves the Raiders with questions surrounding the future of former top overall draft pick JaMarcus Russell, Cable has indicated he will worry about that later as he tries to give his team its best chance to win. That makes the Raiders dangerous to the Cowboys.

"I think they got a lot of momentum after winning last weekend," Dallas cornerback Terence Newman said. "I think they're going to come in and give us a good test."

The Raiders have won three straight to take a 6-3 lead in the all-time series. They won 13-12 in their last visit to Dallas in 1998.

SB Nation Raiders vs Cowboys Preview here.
First of all, I would like to extend my best wishes to the whole Silver And Black Pride community for a Happy Thanksgiving Day! Nothing better then Turkey Day football and now we have it with our Raiders!
For the Raiders and their fans, there was not much time to revel in last Sunday's upset victory over the Bengals at the Coliseum with the Raiders having to play on the road against the Cowboys on a short week for Thanksgiving Day.
The Raiders will be hoping to take their momentum from last Sunday's win on the road to Dallas along with the pumped-up and energized QB Bruce Gradkowski leading the way. It is very important for this team to make a positive showing against Dallas, not just because it is a nationally televised game, but because the followup games that came after the previous two Raiders victories resulted in blowout losses. With the Dallas team showing some vulnerabilities and the Raiders now playing with a new sense of purpose under Gradkowski, a win for the Raiders in Dallas is achievable.
Cowboys QB Tony Romo will play, but he is banged up and if the Raiders can get to him with consistent pressure then the Raiders have a chance to create some turnovers and stay with the Cowboys. The good news for the Raiders is that defensive lineman Richard Seymour's aching back has improved enough for him to play. That, coupled with former Cowboys defensive end Greg Ellis, who is fired up and going to prove that Dallas made a mistake by releasing him in the offseason. The Raiders on defense are well aware of their tendency to give up game changing big plays and the Dallas offense is surely capable of the big play, so the Raiders will have to step up their effort to avoid giving up the big plays in Dallas. While Dallas has been installed as 14 point favorites against the Oakland, the Raiders do seem to own Dallas head coach Wade Phillips, who is just 1-6 in his career against the Raiders.
Now that the Raiders offense is in the competent hands of Gradkowski, they should be able to produce a much more balanced attack. While Gradkowski can manage the game with some precision passing, the Raiders really need to plan and execute a solid running game, especially to nullify the strong Cowboys defensive line. This is all the more important when you consider that Cornell Green will be starting at right tackle on the road in a noisy stadium, where his penchant for false starts or giving up a big sack are all too frequent. If the Raiders can design a good plan for utilizing Bush, Fargas and McFadden, then they will be able to neutralize the Cowboys pass rush and be able to let Grads make the smart passing plays. The Raiders will need to get at least 150 yards on the ground to be able to dictate the flow of this game. They need to not fall behind early or else it will be a long day trying to play catchup football in Dallas.
Alright Raider Nation, we're all set for our Turkey Day feast, what are you thoughts on today's game and what are your Raider keys to victory?
GO R-A-I-D-E-R-S!!!

NFL Preview - N.Y. Giants (6-4) at Denver (6-4)

NFL Preview - N.Y. Giants (6-4) at Denver (6-4)

NFL Preview - N.Y. Giants (6-4) at Denver (6-4)

A little more than a month ago, the Denver Broncos and New York Giants were both undefeated and beginning to think bigger.

Five weeks later, as they head into their Thanksgiving night battle at Invesco Field at Mile High, the Broncos and Giants find themselves trying to maintain their rapidly deteriorating territory in the playoff race.

Homestanding Denver enters Thursday's contest nursing a four-game losing streak that has robbed Josh McDaniels' squad of its once-firm grasp on the AFC West lead.

The Broncos, who were 6-0 and owned a three-and-half-game lead over the Chargers when the month of November began, are now in second-place after San Diego's 32-3 rout in Denver this past Sunday.

The Broncos committed three turnovers in the loss, including a key second- quarter fumble by running back Knowshon Moreno at the goal line, while a struggling defense surrendered 203 yards on the ground to LaDainian Tomlinson and the San Diego rushing attack.

After allowing just 11 points per game during their 6-0 start, the Broncos have given up more than 29 per outing during their four-game slide.

The Giants come off a happier Week 11 result, though the residue of the club's own four-game losing streak was not completely washed away in a 34-31 overtime victory over Atlanta.

Eli Manning had his strongest day of the year, completing 25-of-39 passes for a season-high 384 yards with three touchdowns and an interception to get Big Blue back into the win column, but an injury-riddled Giants defense continued to have some issues.

The Giants allowed two long Falcons drives in the fourth-quarter that helped Atlanta rally from 31-17 down to force overtime, before Manning bailed out that group by leading an eight-play, 49-yard drive in overtime that ended with Lawrence Tynes' 36-yard game-winning field goal.

Tom Coughlin's squad enters Week 12 one game behind first-place Dallas (7-3) in the NFC East, and is tied with Philadelphia (6-4) within a crowded NFC East.

Both teams have some history on Thanksgiving Day.

The Broncos last played on Thanksgiving in 2006, when they fell to the Chiefs, 19-10, dropping their record on the holiday to 2-8 all-time. Denver last won on Thanksgiving in 2005, when they downed the Cowboys, 24-21 in overtime.

Denver last hosted a Thanksgiving Day game in 1963, when they lost to the Raiders in an AFL matchup.

The Giants last appeared on Thanksgiving in 1992, when they were 30-3 losers to the Cowboys. New York is 7-5 all-time on the holiday, and Big Blue last won on Turkey Day in 1982, when they won at Detroit.

SERIES HISTORY

The Giants lead the all-time regular season series with the Broncos, 5-4, breaking a deadlock in the series with a 24-23 home victory during the 2005 season. Denver won the previous meeting, a 31-20 home affair in 2001. The Giants are 0-2 in Denver since last winning there in 1989, and home teams are 7-2 in the regular season series all-time.

In addition to the regular season series, the teams met for Super Bowl XXI in Pasadena following the 1986 season, won by the Giants by a 39-20 count.

Coughlin is 3-3 in his career against the Broncos, including 2-3 during his tenure with Jacksonville (1995-2002). Coughlin's Jags were 30-27 upset winners over Denver in a 1996 AFC Divisional Playoff, and fell by a 42-17 count in a 1997 AFC First-Round Playoff. Denver's McDaniels will be meeting both Coughlin and the G-Men for the first time as a head coach.

WHEN THE GIANTS HAVE THE BALL

After experiencing some rough seas during the Giants' first three losses of the season, Manning (2454 passing yards, 18 TD, 9 INT) seems to have regained his steady hand against the Chargers and Falcons the past two weeks. In the loss to San Diego and win over Atlanta, Manning was a combined 50-of-72 (69.4 percent) for 599 yards, five touchdown passes and just one interception, while getting all of his many targets involved. The Giants' main receiving triumvirate - Steve Smith (65 receptions, 5 TD), Mario Manningham (40 receptions, 4 TD), and rookie Hakeem Nicks (28 receptions, 4 TD) - have all added value, and the trio along with tight end Kevin Boss (24 receptions, 4 TD) have accounted for 16 of Manning's 18 touchdown passes on the year. Manningham was high-man with six catches and 126 yards against Atlanta, while Boss caught a pair of touchdown passes to give him three end-zone appearances in the past two weeks. On Thursday, the Giants will be looking to complement the aerial attack with a renewed effort from the running game. Brandon Jacobs (656 rushing yards, 3 TD) had a disappointing year extended last week, when he rushed for just 39 yards on 12 carries but did score a touchdown. Ahmad Bradshaw (549 rushing yards, 4 TD, 10 receptions) wasn't any better, carrying 12 times for 34 yards, and is questionable for Thursday with ankle and foot problems. New York is seventh in the league in rushing (133.8 yards per game) after leading the NFL in that category a season ago. The Giants line has surrendered a modest 16 sacks on the year.

If the Broncos wish to end their winning streak on Thursday night, the team will have to re-locate a defense that has over the past month looked little like the dominating unit that fueled the team's 6-0 start. A lack of playmaking has been among the club's biggest problems, as Denver has recorded just two takeaways over its past four games after coming up with 12 in its first six. A well-regarded secondary, led by cornerbacks Champ Bailey (55 tackles, 1 INT) and Ty Law (6 tackles) along with safety Brian Dawkins (71 tackles), will look to make life difficult for Manning and the receivers on Thursday. Dawkins exited last week's contest with a neck injury, but is expected to play against the Giants. The run-stopping unit that did not hold up well against Tomlinson and the Chargers last week will have to be more stout, beginning with inside linebackers D.J. Williams (79 tackles, 2.5 sacks) and Andra Davis (68 tackles, 3.5 sacks). Up front, ends Vonnie Holliday (18 tackles, 2 sacks) and Ryan McBean (15 tackles) had four tackles each versus the Bolts and will seek to provide a presence at the point of attack. The pass rush continues to be led by Elvis Dumervil (34 tackles, 12 sacks), who leads the NFL in sacks but has notched only two during the club's four-game skid.

WHEN THE BRONCOS HAVE THE BALL

Kyle Orton (2202 passing yards, 11 TD, 5 INT) missed his first start of the season last week due to a sprained ankle suffered the week before in Washington, but it wasn't long before Orton showed his face. Relieving the ineffective Chris Simms, Orton couldn't fuel a comeback, completing 15-of-29 passes for 171 yards and an interception. The Purdue product is expected to be back in the starting lineup this week, and will try to get wideouts Brandon Marshall (52 receptions, 6 TD) and Eddie Royal (31 receptions) involved early. The duo combined for just 55 yards on seven combined receptions against the Chargers. Jabar Gaffney (26 receptions) led the Broncos with 55 receiving yards on three grabs in the loss. Tight end Tony Scheffler (23 receptions, 2 TD) managed just one catch on the afternoon. Moreno (600 rushing yards, 14 receptions, 3 TD), meanwhile, will be trying to shake off a rough outing against San Diego that included 80 yards on 10 carries but was defined by his costly turnover, coupled with a widely-aired shoving match with Marshall on the sideline. Fellow rusher Correll Buckhalter (399 rushing yards, 1 TD, 23 receptions) made his 10 touches count for 81 yards last week, and should be heavily involved against a Giants team that he knows well from his days in the NFC East as a member of the Eagles. The Denver o-line has allowed a modest 19 sacks on the year, with three coming last week. The Broncos are 16th in the league in rushing offense (112.4 yards per game), 19th in passing offense (210.6 yards per game).

Incumbent upon the Giants in their quest to extend the win streak to two games is finding some answers on a battered defense that has had trouble against both the pass and rush at alternating times this season. A pass defense that is second in the league in yards allowed (177.4 yards per game), but has been far from perfect in coverage, allowed 268 yards to the Falcons' Matt Ryan last week despite the return of cornerback Aaron Ross to the lineup. Ross, who missed the first nine games with a hamstring problem, had four tackles while opposite corner Corey Webster (35 tackles, 1 INT) had a whopping five pass breakups. A hit-or-miss pass rush led by ends Osi Umenyiora (20 tackles, 5 sacks) and Justin Tuck (32 tackles, 4.5 sacks) will be seeking to mitigate the team's coverage problems with some pressure. Umenyiora has only two sacks in his last six games, and Tuck's sack of Ryan last week broke a string of four consecutive outings without a QB takedown. The indefinite absence of middle linebacker Antonio Pierce due to a neck problem has placed considerable stress on the NFL's 11th-ranked rushing defense (104.8 yards per game), though linebackers Chase Blackburn (42 tackles) and Michael Boley (34 tackles, 1 sack) - who combined for 20 tackles in limiting the Falcons to 90 rushing yards on 30 carries, were able to compensate last week. Fred Robbins (19 tackles, 1 sack) and Barry Cofield (18 tackles) have been the team's most active interior line run-stuffers this season.

FANTASY FOCUS

The Giants have been a frustrating team from a fantasy perspective this year, as seemingly no one in either the passing or running games has been a consistent producer. Jacobs and Bradshaw (if healthy) are probably still worth having in the lineup due to the number of touches they both receiver, and wideouts Manningham, Nicks, and Smith will likely contribute something, as will Boss. Don't look for another 300-yard day out of Manning, though. The most reliable Giant has probably been kicker Lawrence Tynes, who isn't deadly accurate but gets a lot of opportunities. Steer clear of the Giants defense until further notice.

The Broncos are a hard fantasy team to peg as well. The passing game has taken a major step back the past few weeks, with Orton's injury complicating matters, but you might want to take a flier on either Marshall or Royal against a suspect Giants secondary. Also, Moreno is a decent play against a Big Blue defense missing their top run-stopper Pierce. Denver's Matt Prater is a good fantasy kicker due to his big, albeit erratic, leg. The Broncos defense is no longer a reliable play.

OVERALL ANALYSIS

The Broncos have lost their luster in a major way over the past month, and nothing the team did in that blowout loss to the Chargers would suggest they're on the cusp of regaining their past fortunes. Still, apart from a bad loss at Washington which was aided in large part by an unforeseen quarterback switch, there's been no shame in any of the Broncos' defeats, and a matchup against a Giants team that has likewise been confounding, and will be making a long, difficult trip on a short week, is a good one for Denver. Look for the Broncos to establish Moreno and Buckhalter against a New York defense riddled by injuries, for a talented Broncos secondary to cause some problems for Manning and the secondary, and for McDaniels and company to put its slide to rest.

Predicted Outcome: Broncos 20, Giants 16

Preview: Giants (6-4) at Broncos (6-4)

Preview: Giants (6-4) at Broncos (6-4)

Date: November 26, 2009 8:20 PM EDT

After a perfect start, the Denver Broncos are looking for answers following a four-game losing streak. The New York Giants can relate.

The stumbling Broncos look to end their skid Thursday night when they host the Giants, who halted their four-game slide four days earlier.

Denver (6-4) looked like one of the elite teams in the NFL during its 6-0 start under new coach Josh McDaniels. The Broncos had a 3 1/2-game lead on San Diego in the AFC West heading into their bye week Oct. 25.

Since returning to action, Denver has been outscored 117-37 and fell one game behind the Chargers with a 32-3 home loss to San Diego on Sunday. The Broncos haven't scored an offensive touchdown in dropping their last two at Invesco Field.

I think the good thing is for a team in our situation, coming off a tough division game, is obviously we didn't play nearly the way we wanted to and on a four-game losing streak, we are eager to get back on the field and play again," McDaniels said. "This might be a good time for our team."

New York (6-4) has endured similar highs and lows. The Giants were dominant during a 5-0 start before losing four straight going into their bye. They ended that skid with a 34-31 overtime win over Atlanta on Sunday.

Coach Tom Coughlin understands what Denver is dealing with but doesn't have any advice for rookie coach McDaniels and the Broncos this week.

"There are some thoughts that we had that we utilized last week," Coughlin said. "I had rather not share. Denver media would like to know, I think, which I don't know whether there is any magic - there is no magical answer. You have to play your way out of whatever issues you have and it has to be settled on the field. A lot of it is, as I said, your approach."

McDaniels expects to have Kyle Orton back as his starting quarterback after his sprained left ankle made the coach go with Chris Simms last week. Simms looked shaky in his first three series, and Orton entered and went 15 of 29 for 171 yards and an interception.

Orton has practiced fully in preparation for this game and could be excited by what he has seen from New York's defense. The unit is ranked second in the NFL but allowed its last two opponents to go the length of the field for touchdowns late in the fourth quarter to tie or take the lead.

"Well, we need to get some things shored up on our end, but we are excited to get going here on Thursday," Orton said. "I think if we play our best ball, we'll have a good chance."

The Giants allowed the Falcons to score 24 points on four second-half possessions Sunday, surrendering the final 14 of regulation. They survived by winning the overtime coin toss and driving 49 yards for Lawrence Tynes' winning 36-yard field goal.

"I think we have done very well in certain situations, but we haven't played as well as I think we can," defensive end Osi Umenyiora said. "I think it is important for everybody to keep on listening to what the coaches are saying and go out there and try to execute our defense. I think if everybody does that, we will be pretty good."

Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce will miss his second straight game with a neck injury.

New York is tied with Philadelphia for second place in the NFC East, one game behind Dallas, and heads to Denver with concerns in the backfield.

Brandon Jacobs expects to play after he missed the fourth quarter and overtime Sunday with an injured right leg, saying he could have re-entered the game. Ahmad Bradshaw, however, has been ruled out because of a sprained left ankle.

The Giants managed 88 yards rushing on 26 carries, forcing Eli Manning to shoulder the load. Manning threw for a career-high 384 yards and three scores.

"I felt good," Manning said. "I felt in rhythm and guys were making plays and getting open. And the offensive line was protecting, so I felt good."

Manning threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Amani Toomer with 5 seconds left for a 24-23 win four years ago in these teams' last meeting. The Giants fell 31-20 in their lone visit to Invesco Field on Sept. 10, 2001.
