- - First a brutal 0-8 in NCAA last Saturday to send me reeling.
- - Then a desperately needed 3-1 in NFL last Sunday.
- - Now a :box2: 9-3-1 bounceback in NCAA this Saturday, with Miami(-14) and Kansas State(+2') as smaller unposted winners as well.

Iowa(+17) over Ohio State (1*)
- -
The most interesting "take" I've read on an Ohio State message board was the following:

"Wow. Just over at an Iowa board. However confident we are they are even more so - that WE will win . . . I can't imagine being in their situation and not believing you have a chance."
"I can't imagine Iowa beating us. But how depressing it must be to be playing for the Rose Bowl and undisputed Big Ten championship - all on one game - and not buy in to the possibility.
- - For schmucks like me, a disproportionate share of our greatest moments from a lifetime of following sports have come on occasions when someone stood absolutely no chance. I'm fully invested here in whatever scrap of a possibility might exist. God Bless and God Damn.

Temple(-5') over Akron (1*)
- - I'm not smart enough or stupid enough to see why the Owls won't embrace the spotlight and why the Zips taking out their neighboring rival was a just an appetizer before they feast on this as their main course.

Cincinnati(-9) over West Virginia (1*)
- - On Monday, Kelly said he'd go with Pike when the senior was healthy. On Tuesday, the coach announced Collaros as his starter with Pike expected to play . . . Last week was a play on the incredible heart being shown by Connecticut, and that plus some muscle provided one of the most resilient college efforts of 2009. This week is a play on the Collaros led Bearcats, trusting in Kelly to know who his guy is.

South Carolina(+18) over Florida (1*)

Pittsburgh(-6') over Notre Dame (1*)
- - The evidence strongly suggests Weiss has serious shortcomings with developing his players and motivating his players. Then, last week, Notre Dame nose tackle Ian Williams told reporters after the game, "They out-schemed us," seemingly questioning his coaches and their strategy. Asked about the comment, Weis noted in his Sunday news conference that safety Kyle McCarthy defended Notre Dame?s schemes. "I did hear quite contrasting answers to the same question," Weis said. "That?s why one guy?s a captain and one guy?s not." Nice job of throwing your players under the bus, Coach . . . I don't see how the visitor carries the emotional edge in this sellout game, or why Wannstedt will epically fail to keep pushing the right buttons with this team in their only big game in 35 days.

"Let me 'splain. No, there is too much. Let me sum up. ~ Inigo Montoya . . .

- - I have been persistent since the middle of summer in telling people I expected Iowa would control their own destiny for the Rose Bowl when they went to Columbus in November, and they should count on Iowa hanging with the Buckeyes till the final gun. IMO, that was pretty much the linear trajectory this team has been on since about October of last year. While I can't claim I saw the exact paths any of the contenders have taken, paths that now seem to give Ohio State such an obvious advantage, the Hawks have been too much of an open book for me to expect anything less than a righteous effort today that some how gives the Buckeyes all they can handle into the 4th quarter.

- - I really wanted to get the weekend off to a 2-0 start in order to smooth out any speed bumps from today, but hitting a big road win in the MAC, while going down to the final seconds with my other play, it is what it is.

- - Without an overload of unfavorable matchups "in space" (and instead getting a suspect opponent that steals a win while giving up 8 sacks to A&M), look for first year Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads to have his squad deliver a performance worthy of Senior Day in Ames and secure a very meaningful victory.

- - Almost every angle last week suggested it was almost a perfect storm for Stanford to have the right stuff to hang with and possibly/indeed derail the Oregon juggernaut, and even then it sure looked at the end like Oregon was scoring at will and Stanford didn't have enough left in the tank to hold on for many more minutes . . . Almost every angle this week suggests Arizona State is up against almost a perfect storm when it comes to seriously waging a 60 minute war in Autzen.

- - I think Arkansas registered one of the most misleading scores of the week against South Carolina last week. Back home I see a live dog with lots of edges in this one. http://blogs.palmbeachpost.com/gato...-figured-out-whats-ailing-the-gators-offense/

- - The only constant I see is that Notre Dame needs to go in a different direction.

Adding . . .

Michigan State(-3) over Purdue (1*)
- - The Spartans and their disappointing defense have developed into a serious blind spot for yours truly, but I'm counting on the Spartans overcoming the affliction before I'm forced to.

Kansas State(+1) over Missouri (1*)
- - I like to think it's a play on KState, but it's probably slightly more of a fade against Missouri rising up today and ruining Snyder's perfect return to Manhattan.

Heading off to Nile Kinnick after a full week of work . . . No due diligence in looking at this week's card, so I'm not venturing very far from the fairly familiar over the last three months . . .

Iowa(-11) over Minnesota (1*)
- - QB James Vandenberg now has expectations; have to see how that plays out for a team needing to punctuate their season . . . Minnesota talks more in a week about what they'll do at every turn than Iowa talks about the future over the course of two or three seasons.

Texas(-27) over Kansas (1*)
- - In what was looking like an ugly matchup for Kansas a few weeks ago, I don't know how HC Mangino can be pushing the right buttons.

Stanford(-7)(-120) over Notre Dame (1*)
- - Odd to see 3 of the last 4 games in this series decided by exactly 7 points, and another decided by 8 points in 2004, with blowouts as well, of course with 7 in a row going to the altar boys since 2002.

Arizona(-3) over Arizona State (1*)
- - While ASU has been losing 5 in a row and HC Dennis Erickson has been taking the program to the unacceptable level that was exactly predicted by 60% to 92% of those I consider knowledgeable observers, they could always be counted on to have a chance to salvage their season in this one game, and they will play like it. Arizona has lost 2 straight and has to get off the mat or watch their season get turned back to a place they believed they were on the verge of leaving. I'll give my cash a chance with Arizona in a Territorial Cup game that will require Arizona to have their puny hearts show and/or grow two levels above the clusterf*ck hatching under Erickson.

No shortage of games to tempt me, but limiting myself to these two over concerns about the lines moving . . . I'll now watch as at least one of the lines moves against my expectations.

Connecticut(-12') over Syracuse (1*)
- - A scrappy Syracuse team that's been hard not to like all season long gets a huge win for their season and the program. A Connecticut team with one incredible heart goes home with a win for the ages. Simply put, I know which locker room I've been with as they were building a vault that can carry my cash again this week.

Texas A&M(+21) over Texas (1*)
- - At no point during this season have I seen a G-R-E-A-T college team that will put it's mark on the game (although TCU might get a chance for something historic). So much so that I have to see value with the chances of 3 flawed rivals to play at a level that pushes and punches and pressures the annointed teams, with this spot off the fond farewells in Austin looking like the best of the lot, although I fully expect to be tempted in with Auburn and Florida State as well.

- - Nebraska gets about as close as you can get to an NFL-level spot of a meaningless game before a playoff game, with travel and short preparation. Colorado has been feisty lately, but with no taste of satisfaction . . . You decide, works for me.

Florida State(+24') over Florida (1*)
Auburn(+10)(-115) over Alabama (1*)
