Florida defensive end Carlos Dunlap has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence, just days before for the top-ranked Gators play their biggest game of the season.

Dunlap, a junior from North Charleston, S.C., is awaiting an initial appearance at the Alachua County Jail. He was arrested at 3:25 a.m. Tuesday.

According to police, an officer was dispatched to check out reports of a reckless driver near campus. When the officer spotted a car matching the description of the reports, he found Dunlap asleep at the wheel. The officer woke up Dunlap, who failed a field sobriety test, refused a breath test and was booked.

Dunlap, the defensive MVP of last season's Bowl Championship Series national title game, has started every game this season for the defending champs. He has 35 tackles and is tied for the team lead with seven sacks heading into Saturday's Southeastern Conference championship game against No. 2 Alabama.

Florida football player Carlos Dunlap has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence after Gainesville Police Department officers found him slumped over the wheel of a car that was idling at an intersection early Tuesday morning.

Dunlap?s status for Saturday?s Southeastern Conference Championship Game against Alabama is uncertain. A UF spokesman was unable to be reached for comment.

GPD spokesman Keith Kameg said officers responded to a reckless driving call and found a red 2000 Chrysler stopped at a green light at an intersection near 200 SW 34th St. in Gainesville at 3:25 a.m. The car did not move through several traffic signal cycles and approached the car where they found Dunlap slumped over in the driver?s seat.

Kameg said the driver?s side window was cracked and officer Robert Rogers was able to awaken Dunlap, though Dunlap ?would only open his eyes momentarily and then fall back asleep.?

Officers were able to unlock the door through the cracked window and once they opened the door found that the car was still in gear, Kameg said. They put the car in park and turned off the ignition.

?The defendant was very groggy and had difficulty speaking and listening to instructions,? Kameg said.

Kameg said officers noted in their report that Dunlap had difficulty speaking and had watery and bloodshot eyes. They also smelled alcohol, Kameg said.

Kameg said Dunlap did poorly on a field sobriety test and refused to provide a breath sample and was arrested.

After being informed of his rights, Dunlap said he had been at a gathering and was heading home.

Dunlap (6 feet 6, 290 pounds) is tied for the team lead with seven sacks and the junior from North Charleston, S.C., also has six pass breakups and 35 tackles for the top-ranked Gators (12-0).
