There is a pretty big debate on the topic of whether it is possible to gain muscle mass while losing weight.

In order to "grow" muscle you need to eat a more calories than your body needs. That will result in more muscle but also slightly more fat.

Most people trying to add mass go with the "bulk and cut" phases.

There is a small group of people believe that by using a Keto diet it is possible to burn fat and gain mass at the same time.

I've done both and have found the best results with the bulk and cut method. While doing Keto my gains were smaller and did not lose fat.

You should try a few cycles of both and see what works best for you.

As far as supplements try to get most of your calories from real food and not too many shakes.

Need to eat "real" food

Need to eat "real" food

Many people get caught up in supplements, etc and don't realize its food that gives you results. I'm not as familiar with the nutrition part of px 90 but I thought they have an extensive program. You could follow that exclusively and you'll notice that is where your significant gains come from. Bars and crap like that are ok if thats all you have and you're not at home or haven't prepared a meal in advance. But you should NEVER rely on them as your main meals! Definitely need to have plenty of "Real" food on hand. This is anything that is butchered or grown in the ground. To supply your protein requirements you will generally need (.6-.8g/lb of body weight). Or keep it even simpler, and think of a serving no bigger than your palm. People go stupidly overboard with this and think they need crazy amounts of protein. Any excessive amounts of protein will either be excreted out or broken down and become fat or in extreme cases, put your body into a state of ketosis.
Anyways, stick to lean sources of protein and your carbs should consist of fruits and veggies. Again, real food! And yes you need good sources of fat as well. This is as easy as cooking chicken in olive oil or adding cashews/almonds to the side of your plate. You want balance.
I actually prefer the "zone" diet which gives you exact measurements based on body size, activity, etc...But when it comes down to it, eating real food will get you better results than any "supplement." As you will generally see, supplements are basically bull shit but they are marketed in a way to be necessities.
Hope that helps! GL

thanks for the info....

I like the p90x diet...5 meals during the day...3 hours apart...around 1800 cal/day....

I do utilize protein bars for my 10:00 b/c I work on the road and it is a quick fix....

I know there is no 'magic' pill, its' about getting in the gym and 'bringing it'....BUT when you are over 40...may need a 'bump' with supplements...

as far as your diet goes,on weight training days, make sure you eat lean chicken/tuna or egg whites or something healthy that has good protein content.....

a friend`s son was heavy into body building...competitive body building...he went apeshit on the protein supplements, had a blockage and ended up in the hospital with kidney failure...

i take it you aren`t diabetic,so,a rice cake with lowfat peanut butter on it is a nice after workout snack....

there`s also somethng called "muscle milk light" that is sugar free, has 3 grams of fat(.5 saturated) with 15 grams of protein you can drink....

doesn`t taste all that great, but it does the job....

be a little careful with all that protein.... try and get as much as possible through lean meat(chicken/tuna/egg whites)....

you already dwarf bigfoot....cut the rest of louisiana some slack dude...:D

Do exactly what you are doing diet wise you are doing everything great. In round 2 on the weight lifting days decrease your reps to 6-8 using heavier weight. The muscle mass will happen. Give it 90 days and I gurantee you will be happywith results. The only suplement you should get is cod liver oil 1tblsp a day in morning.

cod liver oil is good..but,just so you know,it can also cause some problems if overdone....

http://www.essortment.com/lifestyle/possiblesideef_slyf.htm

i just take a fish oil supplement...
Cod liver oil is an omega-3 fat that most people aredeficient in. Omega 3 is an essential amino acid because it is truly essential that you consume it. Our bodies do not produce essential amino acids on their own, but are necessary for a multitude of funtions in the bodyespecially proper hormone funtion. Cod liver oill is the best choice for absorbtion, plus it has a high concentration of vitamin A and D.Fish supplements taken in capsule formula eventually break down into trans fat , cod liver oil is absorbed better in body and does not break down into trans fats. Very unlikey you will ever take to much cod liver oil 1tbsp per day is all thats needed.

My top 5 training staples:
1) Protein (mostly from real food ie: tuna, eggs, lean meats)

2) Complex Carbs (Oatmeal, brown rice, potatoes etc)

3) Multi vitamin/mineral

4) Water (lots of it, try to get 2 gallons a day)

5) Sleep (8 hours min. of deep sleep, I like to get 10 hours when possible)

:)

The one I use I get from local health store is the kids cod liver oil it should be in a refrigerated area at store ask clerk. The reason we take this even though its a little more expensive is it actually taste alot better than non refrigerated stuff on shelf. The kids will actullally take it because of the taste.

just increase the amount of protein you eat and reduce everything else. pound the protein as much as you can and you'll get great results.

As a nutritionist I would not recoomend that you are better off to keep balance in the body 33% protein, carbs, good essential fat. To much protein is very tough on kidneys.

Latchan, just stick with the p90x program and you'll be good. If you get to a point where you're sub 14% body fat or even lower then you can start looking at some things to help you.

I wouldn't hurt to find out what kind of body type you are(ecto, endo or meso) that will help you with what type of exercises and foods you should be eating. I for example have to be very strict with carbs or else I gain fat.
