the chance for PIT
(got this off a fan forum)

Besides winning in the final week against Miami, the Steelers need...

1?The New England Patriots to beat the Houston Texans

and...

2?Either the Cincinnati Bengals to beat the New York Jets or...the Oakland Raiders to beat Baltimore

Houston can beat New England and Pitt would still have a chance... but it would be slight.

They would need Cincinnati to beat the Jets, Oakland to beat Baltimore, and Kansas City to beat Denver.

The Pittsburgh Steelers need help from two teams next week. One being New England and the other being either Cincinnati or Oakland.
Both New England and Cincinatti are playing for something, even if they already have locked spots. Oakland can still play spoiler to at least one more team, and Tom Cable's crew will be looking to do just that.

If New England and Cincinnati were fighting for something the Steelers would have a great chance. But do you think either team cares more about who is going to be the third or fourth seed in the playoffs, or resting their injured players and making sure none of their starters get hurt?

It has been established that neither New England or Cincinnati should want to lose considering the fact that if both move on in the bracket, the #4 team would have to head to the #3 teams home field...and since they have the same record at the moment, they better try their best. (however, due to scheduling, Cincinatti will know wether they are the 4th seed or not by the time the New England game is over. Side note: Those two teams should be playing simultaneously in my opinion..)

what the texans need

First, the things we know for sure...

---Texans need to beat New England to improve their record to 9-7 and assure themselves a shot

---The only team the Texans hold the tiebreaker over among the four teams is Pittsburgh by virtue of a better record against common opponents (4-1, 2-3, if the Steelers beat Miami this coming Sunday)

Here is the break down on what needs to happen...

Scenario #1: Texans win, everyone else loses (Houston would be at 9-7, everyone else at 8-8, which would mean they get in)

Scenario #2: Texans win, Denver loses to Kansas City, New York loses to Cincinnati, Baltimore beats Oakland, Pittsburgh beats Miami (Texans, Ravens, Steelers finish at 9-7--Ravens get in, Texans top Steelers in tie-breaker)

Scenario #3: Texans win, New York loses to Cincinnati, Baltimore loses to Oakland, Denver beats Kansas City, Pittsburgh beats Miami (Texans, Broncos and Steelers finish at 9-7--Steelers get in with tie-breaker against Broncos, Texans top Steelers in tie-breaker)

Scenario #4: Texans win, Denver loses to Kansas City, Baltimore loses to Oakland, New York beats Cincinnati, Pittsburgh beats Miami (Texans, Jets, Steelers finish at 9-7--Jets get in, Texans top Steelers in tie-breaker)

It is unreal how the crappy Jets are going to BACK their way into the playoffs.
I mean they choked last week at home to Atlanta.
This week they are dead in the water until a kickoff return for a td then catch a huge break in Indy benching any solid starter.
This Sunday doesn't get any tougher as Cincy comes to town with NOTHING to play for.
The Colts screwed themselves out of a perfect season and screwed other teams out of their fair chance to be playoff bound.

And why play Manning if you are not going to even finish with him??? I mean does he really need the work? NO
When was the last game Manning missed because of injury? Either play him from start to finish or don't.
How funny would it have been to see Manning go down for the season in the 2ndQ knowing he was getting pulled in the 3rd.
PULLING PLAYERS MID GAME IS GAY.

I dont understand how Denver would be in if the season ended today, but dont control their own destiny with one game left.

What is on their side today that wont be on their side if they win along with the Ravens and Jets?

What is on their side today that wont be on their side if they win along with the Ravens and Jets?

As the seedings currently stand, the Denver Broncos are the No. 5 seed and New York Jets the No. 6 seed, due to tie-breakers in strength of victory. Both teams are 8-7.
And, technically, the Baltimore Ravens (8-7), Pittsburgh Steelers (8-7), Houston Texans (8-7), Miami Dolphins (7-8) and Jacksonville Jaguars (7-8) are still alive.
However, the tie-breaker scenario will change in Week 17, and the result will change the order of the seven teams still alive for the two playoff spots. When the Baltimore Ravens face the Oakland Raiders next Sunday, the common games tie-breaker will then come into play for the Broncos, Jets and Ravens.
If the Jets defeat the Bengals, they would hold a three-way tie-breaker over the Ravens and Broncos (if the teams remain tied). If the Ravens defeat the Raiders, they would then hold the tiebreaker over the Broncos because of the 30-7 win in Week 8.
It?s a lot to take in, but what it all means is that the Jets and Ravens control their playoff destiny. If those teams win next week, they?re in.

6. Baltimore Ravens (8-7) ? Currently No. 6 seed because of better division record than Pittsburgh (3-3 to 2-4), better conference record than Houston (6-5 to 5-6) and head-to-head victory vs. Denver. Would clinch No. 5 seed with win and New York loss. Would clinch No. 6 seed with win and New York win. Eliminated with loss.
Next week: at Oakland

7. Denver Broncos (8-7) ? Currently No. 7 seed due to better conference record than Houston (6-5 to 5-6). Would clinch No. 5 seed with New York loss and Baltimore loss and either Pittsburgh loss or both Denver win and Houston win. Would clinch No. 6 seed with win and 1) New York loss or Baltimore loss (not both), and 2) Pittsburgh and/or Houston loss. Would clinch No. 6 seed with loss and either 1) New York loss and Baltimore loss and Houston loss and Miami loss, or 2) Pittsburgh loss and losses by at least two of the following: New York, Baltimore, Houston.
Next week: vs. Kansas City

The answer to this is purely technical - relating to the NFLs established tie breaking procedure.

As of 15 games played, the "common team" tiebraker procedure cant be used to separate the Jets, Broncos, and Ravens - BECAUSE this requires a minimum of 4 common teams. This 4 common team thing will be realized when the 16th game of the season is played by all teams (in particular the Cincy game with the Jets).

When that occurs the difference between the Jets, Denver and the Ravens will be established by the common team tiebraker - in which case the Jets (assuming they win) will grab the #5 seed.

That will leave the Ravens and the Broncos (again assuming that they win their respective games) in a two way tie with Denver - in which case the Ravens win because they beat the Broncos - and therefore Baltimore gets the 6th seed.

Houston and Pittsburgh drop out along the way because of other tie breaking rules.

So technically it is correct to show Denver and NY in the 5th and 6th positions as of the 15th game. But any idiot knows there will be a 16th game in which case (assuming that everybody wins their game) it will be NY and the Ravens as the 5th and 6th seed<!-- / message -->
