neighbor just bought a new mac laptop and the apple wireless router and he is trying to set it up so the laptop is wireless but also be able to use the internet on his desktop (dell w/ windows).

If he wants to use the desktop, he takes the cable cord from the modem and puts it into the desktop (IE - normal desktop setup using a modem connection). When setting up the apple router it calls for a LAN cable from the modem to be put into the router. The router does connect to the modem with a male/female connector. The only problem is that the modem only has 1 spot for a LAN cable, and the same is true for apple router. So, if he takes the LAN cable from the modem and puts it into the router, he has not spot to hook up his desktop LAN cable.

I assume he needs to get a different router than the apple one that he got (with more port for LAN cable, but before he spends more money, I wanted to see if there are other options?

Pretty stupid to make a router like that.

You can get a wireless antennae that plugs into the USB port on the desktop to make it wireless as well.

I'll tell you what...

I'll tell you what...

I have a linksys router and cable modem from a while ago when I had PC's. I plugged Airport into the configuration when I got my Mac's and it has taken over from there.

FWIW, I hope this helps.

I don't think that is the issue. If he had a Linksys router then there wouldn't be a problem.

Truth is he most likely doesn't need a router at all. I have the same exact setup.
Plug the cable modem into the Dell (PC) computer so that will have internet and the Macbook will pick up the WiFi connection and you can protect it.

My advice is to secure it. If you could figure out what type of internet service he has I can definitely help you do this in like 10 minutes. Give me information here or get my e-mail from Jack.

Not possible. If you don't have a wireless router, there isn't any wireless access.

I don't have a wireless router or any router for that matter.

I have a wireless cable modem. My pc is connected physically to it and, like right now, my laptop is in the bedroom wireless through the Airport connection of my modem.

Okay. The wireless router is built into your modem. Doesn't sound like he has that feature.
