I know a lot here know that Haiti is very near and dear to me. I've been there several times, and I have a lot of friends there. Everyone that I know is either safe or I haven't heard from them. I wouldn't be surprised though if the death toll gets to the hundreds of thousands and if I don't know people who died in the horror. The country is so poor and destitute, and of course there is absolutely no infrastructure. :(

Anyway, if it's ok with Jack (I can't access my email to ask that way) I would like to post a couple of agencies you can donate to if you wish that I am personally familiar with and know the money goes where it is supposed to and not in some board member's pocket.

Jack, when you see this, please reply here if it's ok for me to post the sites.

thanks.

The devastation is at a magnitude that most cannot amagine I am afraid. The more reports that come in the worse it looks. The people can use all the help they can get. I have extended family in the country in and around Port au Prince. They have not been heard from. Very sad and disturbing.

thanks guys. Both of these organizations are Christian based, but please don't let that deter you even if you aren't a Christian.

The one I am most familiar with is Northwest Haiti Christian Mission. The northwest isn't nearly as hard hit as the Port au Prince area, but they do have damage. They have already loaded a truck with supplies and relief to head south. I have been there 3 times doing work, and there is no fluff. Actually, with this earthquake and the damage of the hospital in PAP, NWHCM arguably has the best surgical facilities in the whole country now. I'm sure there will be a lot more surgica trips planned now as that is an awesome resource. The money goes to the people. There are also current and running updates on the site.

www.nwhcm.org

The other organization that I know about is called IDES. It stands for International Disaster Emergency Service. The website is www.ides.org This organization is very worldwide, and they concentrate in areas of disaster. They did a lot of work in the tsunami areas a few years ago, and there's no fluff here either.

Both organizations are very frugal and do a whole lot of good. Thanks for giving if you can, and please don't let some idiot like Pat Robertson dissuade you.

We are waiting to hear any report from our sister parish there. We recently (within last 18 months) built a new church in Haiti.

This is a horrific incident.

Clint - would you mind to say which one of the two above you would recommend donating to if just one? Thanks, bud.

I would recommend Northwest Haiti Christian Mission, J. Thanks. Where in the country is your sister parish? All 3 times I've gone in there have been Americans going in to help with their sister parish. I've met a lot of nice people going to volunteer.

Clint, thanks for posting this as I have been looking for a recommendation of an organization where my donation would be would be most effective and not be used to simply feed the coffers of some pseudo-relief agency. I made a donation to NHCM this morning and I pray that many others will as well. I am also going to post your message on the other forums where BFC advertises in the hope that there are others who are also looking for the right organization to donate to.

God bless.

i decided to go with catholic relief services...more familiar with them as they have a local office....

the people that are going down there are saints...the logistics are crazy ...there wil be no place to stay...hotels or lodging...they`ll have to provide their own everything....

on its best day haiti is a calamity, so now it has to defy description.....

we`re soooo lucky...

You can also easily donate $10 to the American Red Cross by texting "Haiti" to 90999 and your donation will automatically be added to next month?s phone bill. To verify this you can go to the American Red Cross homepage.

It's easy and only $10; less than most of you guys spend on beer in any given day. ...

Ya can also donate $5 to Wyclef Jean?s Haitian Yele charity, text 501501. The money will be added to your next phone bill. His grass roots charity is highly thought of, and gets good reviews.

unfortunately looks like the Haitian quake will make the USGS list of "Most Destructive Known Earthquakes on Record in the World"

as for Pat Robertson's classy remarks, it reminded me of good quote for those religious types, Luke 13:4-5: ?Those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish?
