My ice dispenser has decided that it only wants me to have crushed ice instead of cubes. I prefer cubes most of the time. WTF

Put the switch back on "cubes".

THE WAY A DISPENSER CHANGES FROM CUBES TO CRUSHED ICE IS BY RAISING AN ARM THAT RUNS ALONG THE BOTTOM OF THE ICE BIN. IF IT SETS FOR A LONG TIME, IT CAN GET A BUILUP OF FROST OR ICE THAT KEEPS IT FROM MOVING. PULL THE ICE BIN OUT AND TRY TWISTING THE END OF THE ARM MANUALLY. IT SHOULD OPEN A DOOR AT THE FRONT OF THE BIN THAT WOULD ALLOW THE ICE TO BYPASS THE CUTTER ASSEMBLY.
ALSO,WITH THE ICE BIN REMOVED, PUSH THE DOOR SWITCH BUTTON CLOSED BUT KEEP THE FREEZER DOOR OPEN. WHERE THAT ARM GOES IN THROUGH THE BACK WALL, CHECK FOR MOVEMENT OF A ROD UPWARD WHEN YOU CALL FOR CUBED ICE. IF YOU HEAR A LOUD HUM BUT THE ROD DOESN'T MOVE, YOU MAY NEED TO REPLACE THE SOLENOID ASSEMBLY IN THAT MODULE.

or stick with crushed ice

while I have you here, this reminds me something that happened to my frig recently.

about 2 weeks ago i opened the refrigerator and the light was out. okay, i have to replace the bulb, no biggie.

a few hours later i went in there for something and the butter in the door compartment was completely melted. the frig was cold though.

the ice dispensor did not work at all so i pulled the ice bin out and the ice had melted together. i chipped out the ice chunks and started all over.

since then, no problems except this cubes/crushed issue.

what do you think happened to make the freezer and refrigerator warm up and melt shit?

thanks

Are you sure the power didn't go out sometime during the day? I can't think of anything else if the fridge was cold when you opened it other than it stopped working by loss of power.
no power problem.

something got HOT in there for it to melt the butter and ice like it did. and burn the light bulb out at the same time? maybe the light got real hot before it died?

i know you're busy as hell out there so don't spend your valuable time on this.

thanks for the help and congrats on your colts.

also, send me your address so i can ship that hat.

How to Make Your Refrigerator More Energy Efficient in 5 Easy Steps

Make Your Refrigerator More Energy Efficient in 5 Easy StepsOver time, refrigerators become less efficient resulting in higher electricity bills. Who wants that? Thankfully, there are a few simple things you can do to improve your refrigerator's energy efficiency. Here's how:

Difficulty: Moderately Easy Instructions

Things You'll Need:

Brush or broom
Screwdriver (flat head or phillips head, depending on screw type)
Hair dryer
Cloth towel or paper towels
Vacuum cleaner (optional)

Step 1

Check Your Refrigerator's Temperature Control. True story: I once complained that the refrigerator kept running endlessly. So, I turned the knob to setting "8," thinking the higher the number, the lower the temperature. Wrong! It was the opposite actually. Now I have the thing set to "2," and it's working quite well.

Step 2

Clean the Condenser Coils. First, unplug the refrigerator and pull it out from the wall. Located underneath the appliance behind the bottom kick plate, condenser coils dissipate heat as part of of the cooling process. If dirt, dust, and pet dander clog up the coils, the refrigerator won't cool properly, causing the appliance to run continuously and running up your electricity bill. Remove the kick plate from the bottom front of the refrigerator. If you cannot, you will have to tilt the entire unit up and backward in order to get to the coils. Using your brush or broom, sweep the coils clean. Alternatively, you can use your vacuum cleaner to suck up all the dust.

Step 3

Clean Bottom Rear of Refrigerator. Using your screwdriver, remove the bottom back plate, usually a cardboard piece. Dust out all the dirt with a brush. If you are using a vacuum cleaner with a hose extension, be sure not to suck up water from the drip tray up into the vacuum. Been there, done that; and what a mess it made. Replace back plate.

Step 4

Remove Ice-Buildup From Back of Freezer. This step is more complex. What happens is that ice builds up over time around the coils underneath the cooling fan. To solve the problem, first clean out the freezer and remove back plate with screwdriver to expose cooling fan and coils. For faster thawing, hold hair dryer to back of freezer to melt ice. Dab with towel as the ice melts. When it appears ice is all melted away, dry with hair dryer for another couple minutes. Replace back plate.

Step 5

Clean the area of dust and dirt. Push refrigerator back against the wall leaving a few inches of space for heat dissipation. Plug the appliance back in. You're done! You should begin to see a noticeable improvement in your refrigerator's energy efficiency.

A bulb can get very hot before it burns out. Usually it will melt the plastic where the bulb screws in though.

I'll do it tomorrow ;)

I'm now convinced that's the problem. 5 years and never seen the coils :sadwave:
