We settled on going to the keys for our vacation in late april.

For background, it will be two couples, mid 30's, my wife, and my bro and his wife. Both middle class averagr income, just looking to get away for 4-6 days. Would like to keep the cost of the place to be $200-$300/night.

Have been looking on homeaway and VRBO for rental places, but there are a ton out there with prices all over the board

Is there anywhere we don't want to stay, or really should stay? We will most likely be getting a condo, was just curious if there are 'dumpy' areas, or really 'high brow' areas

Depends on what your looking for, the section of Key West called Old Town is exactly what it sounds like, a older downtown setting with many historical buildings. The east end of the island is where many of the hotels, dining, and nightlife take place, many will refer to it as New Town. Your term "bad" is quite broad and everyone has a different definition of bad, so if you dont want loud nightlife then stay away from Duval, but the only really fairly rough area is Bahama Village which has a large drug trade.

Snoozer,

Get in touch with Bad to the Bone. Jim could probably give you the most insight as he lives down there.

I would definitely go out fishing if you can get away with your brother... It can be somewhat costly but is amazing.

Thanks Woodson, I will reach out to BTB. I went on a deep sea excursion when I was a kid with my father. (leave at 10pm at night, wake up at 6am and you are in the middle on no where)... One of the best times I ever had. We were pulling out 8-10 ft fish like you would pull out fish in a stocked lake.

Not sure we will go over night, but we do plan to go out for the day

I'll be down there with the wife in early April, unfortunately also with other in-laws. If there are any good restaurants that anyone cand recommend, would love to hear them.

BO's Fish Wagon...

You have to go to get the conch sandwich. It is phenomenal. I'll dig up the name of the open restaurant and respond back...

Here it is...

For the perfect fish sandwich, head to this hopping little open-air shack that turns out fresh food with zero fuss, as well as great live music on Friday nights. The owner, Buddy Owen, is something of a local legend, having started his operation more than 25 years ago out of a little wagon on Duval Street. Last year, Bobby Flay and his Food Network camera crew paid a visit. And no wonder. Don?t miss the cracked conch sandwich, tiny strips of fried conch stuffed between fresh Cuban bread and shot with Key Lime mayo. Sounds simple, but no ? heaven.

As far as restaurants, Louies Backyard in Key West is fantastic. So is O"s Fishwagon? I think that is the name of it, for lunch. Louies Backyard is a MUST!!

Mr. Poon...you staying in Key West? I (or BBC) can fill you in on Islamorada. If you are staying in Key West, just tell the 'street hawkers' you live somewhere in the Keys. I day trip there (as a DD) about once a year.

BDB - yeah, don't know the details of where but will get that and shoot you an email. I was just instructed what days to take off of work (from you know who), and have completed that task so far.
