So my hometown Tigers are back to pissing off the fans. After getting rid of fan favorite Curtis Granderson because of "salary issues" and not even attempting to sign back Polanco every Tiger fan was mad/heartbroken/giving up. So what do they do, they go out and sign around 5 new players. Granted we acquired "young" talent, but the best apparently was yet to come. The Tigers owner has become involved with attempting to pick up Johnny Damon. While cheaper option J. Dye is still out there, Ilitch seems to be in love with the big name.
Reports came out about how Damon really wanted to come to Detroit because he could make a difference and make them a winning team. He also commented on how much he likes Stevey Y, hockey, and even loves eating octopus. So Ilitch offered 2 years for 14 million!!!! WTF After the offer Damon looked around to see if anyone would top it. Wait, didn't you just say you wanted to come here?
So there was his chance and he balked. The White sox offered him a one year, but that wasn't good enough either. But then the Sox did what the Tigers should have done, the pulled there offer. Now there is another one on the table, but so is the offer from the Tigers.
Now, we will probably get a limp-wristed outfielder with an Ok left handed bat....
And Ilitch wonders why attendance is dropping:wtf:

I think Boras is a fucking scumbag but Damons wish was to finish with the yanks.
He probably just wants a 1 year deal so he can have a chance to join the yanks next year.
We'll see how this plays out :mj07:

Nick: Granderson was the PERFECT trade candidate. He is flashy without the substance. Dombrowski is a top notch GM and I think he is proving it this off season. He is getting way more than he ever should for Granderson, who is a lead off man that strikes out a lot. I also like the fact that he allowed Fernando Rodney to get picked up by the Angels. The Tigers were lucky that he got as many saves as he did with his ERA...let someone else over pay him and take the compensation draft picks (or whatever they get out of the deal). Polanco was expendable. He is getting old and his numbers have dropped 2 years in a row. Let someone else have a slow 2nd baseman that hits .285 and has an OBP of .331.

If Illitch makes Dombrowski sign Damon, we will be on our way to Tiger teams before Dombrowski came to town.

Damon signs one year deal with Tigers. $$ unknown

I agree about it being the right time to get rid of Granderson, but the b.s'd why they did it. Polanco was just good at his position and decent/steady at the plate. I'm grateful Fucknado Rodney is gone. We've picked up decent but a lot of unproven talent. Yes it's young talent and could end up being a great trade for us, but time will tell.

I saw where the deal for Damon is about 8 million.

I think the tigers had one of the best two or three offseasons this winter.

Polanco was one of the worst signings this offseason. No way I would give him a three year deal in this market.

Granderson is a horrible lead off hitter, with his K rate he should be batting towards the bottom half of the order not at the top. Trading him was the smart thing.

What they got back for Jackson and Granderson was unreal.

Austin Jackson is going to be a solid center fielder and is young and under control for a long time. Phil Coke is a solid lefty to have in the pen.

Edwin Jackson had one solid year and the tigers turned it into a much better younger pitcher in Scherzer. Max will be a top ten AL pitcher in two years. Jackson will go back to a 4+ era this year.

Daniel Schlereth is a future closer. Throw in the fact that he is a lefty and ready to go now.

If I am a tigers fan I have to be ecstatic with what they did this offseason.

And nothing wrong with Damon as a DH on a one year deal, he will be a plus player as long as he is not in the field.

I can tell you one thing Granderson won't be batting leadoff.
As for Austin Jackson he's still young and has potential to be a good centerfielder.
As for Phil Coke the Joke don't tell me he's solid :nono:
He had a tough time getting lefties out :142smilie
Let's see how Johnny performs in hockey town his homers will be down this year as compared to last year.

Well I have more problems with the dbacks trade for Jackson then what the yanks gave up for Granderson.

The yankees do things different then most teams, they just use their system to trade for major leaguers. So this trade made sense for them, get a guy who is a major league centerfielder and trade a top prospect who is still a year or two out from being ready to play everyday in the majors.

As for Coke, he will have a solid year this year, last year was his first full season in the bigs and its hard for relievers to put up excellent full first seasons in the AL east.

His projections for this season look decent.

And the tigers are still talking about maybe moving Coke into the rotation where he spent most of his time in the minors.

And last year Coke obviously struggled with the long ball but getting away from yankee stadium will help that greatly.

Also lefties hit .198 off Coke last year.

I guess Marte is the lefty the yanks will use this year unless I am missing someone. Lefties hit .197 career wise vs Marte so not much difference there.

You're right on about Jackson he's not that good, as for Scherzer he's a good pick up.
Don't know about Schlereth but it looks like a steal for detroit.
It's good to get good young talent especially pitching, the Tigers should be heading in the right direction.

Yeah when you look at what they got overall it was a great offseason.

They needed to shed some salary and they did that and kept MCab.

They needed to get some young pitching and they did that.

And signing Damon on a one year deal to DH is not a bad thing at all.

Spartan is Marte the only loogy style option they have in pen? Am I missing someone maybe someone on a spring invite or something.

It seems to me the yanks would have another option back there.

They picked up Boone Logan from the Braves we'll see about him.
They still have Robertson and maybe Joba will join the pen hopefully.

My biggest issue is paying too much for Damon. I did like polanco, granderson had a bad year last year at the plate (the man is horrible against lefty's) and started to have some poor errors in the outfield toward the end of the season. I'm probably one of the few Tiger fans that isn't too upset with the deal, I do wish they would have said, "We have a chance to make a good deal, pick up some pitching and release a player who isn't performing at the plate". I understand Poly was getting old, but if sizemore doesnt pan out at second then who? Guillen?
I am glad to see young players come in, but to me this year could be rough. If these new players come in and do well, then Dave D. will be praised. I'm only going to stay optimistic here and assume they will.
As far as Coke goes, marble mouth has already stated he doesn't even know what to do with the guy. I believe one of the quotes was that he and Willis will be competing for a job! Willis? Seriously if Coke can't beat out Mr. Anxiety himself he can just quit now.

Like I said, I am not too pleased with Damon getting paid off. Great, we have top of the order lefty who can maybe hit the cutoff man after one bounce.
I'm just happy the offer is for only one year.
Hey maybe Guillen, Mags, and Damon can have a sliding into pop-flies class during one of the many junior days. I'd love for the young kids of Detroit learn how to F*** up pop flies just like the big leaguers

Shed salary? Yeah they did that, then went out and paid for Damon.

I did forget about the other closer we acquired, so at least they are attempting to solidify a bullpen.

Rumor has it that Mr. Fastball Yumaya is healthy, that is until he "helps some move" or "gets crazy with guitar hero" again

The Tigers are my favorite team in any sport and I really like what they did this winter. They overachieved last year and it was time to break up that team.

Nick, two questions, what city do you live in and do we know each other?
