Not sure how you are defining hometown, but your post simply isnt accurate. Duke is the only team to even play in its home state in a long time and that was 1994 when Duke lost in Charlotte (which isnt all that close to Durham).

NCState in 74 and UCLA in 75 won the titles in their home states. Purdue lost in Indianapolis in 1980. While out of state Kansas won essentially a home game in Kansas City, Mo in 1988.
