<!-- end .byline -->MINNEAPOLIS ? Spirit Airlines will charge as much as $45 each way for a carry-on bag, adding a fee that bigger airlines have yet to try.
The charge will apply to bags in the overhead bin. Personal items that fit under the seat will still be free. Spirit said it will add measuring devices at the gates to determine which carry-ons are free and which ones will incur the charge.
The new charge is $45 if paid at the gate, and $30 if paid in advance, and begins Aug. 1. Spirit said on Tuesday that it reduced its lowest fares by $40 on average, so most customers won't really pay more to fly.
Spirit also charges to check luggage.
Spirit CEO Ben Baldanza said having fewer carry-on bags will help empty the plane faster. He said the idea is to get customers to pay for individual things they want, while keeping the base fare low.
"The beauty of it is they will do what they think is best for them and will now have the choice," he said.
Spirit is based in Miramar, Fla., and most of its routes run through Fort Lauderdale to Latin America.
Even though it's a minor player, bigger airlines are likely to watch to see whether customers are willing to pay for carry-ons. None of the major carriers made any immediate changes to their fees on Tuesday morning.
Fees for checking bags on the big U.S. carriers got started in 2008. At first, many travelers thought they wouldn't last. But now all the big airlines except Southwest and JetBlue charge to check a bag on domestic flights.

I believe this is much more appropriate than charging for the first checked bag.

I can't stand seeing some douchebag wheeling on a full suitcase just because his all-important ass doesn't want to check a freaking bag.

The self-importance in the world today is getting worse and worse.

I like it, too. Can't stand those people that have 3 bags of who knows what and nothing checked. They clog the damn aisle of the plane trying to fit 10lbs of shit in a 5lb bag while everyone waits in the logjam.

Paying for individual amenities is the way to go. I wish you had to pay for emergency row...I'd pay for it if it meant I had a shot at it every time.

Above the Clouds....
A month ago we were on a flight from Atl to Alb and the stewardess couldn't get the overhead to close. She kept slamming it and moving bags around.finally she said "Who's bag is this?" You know the fuckhead that owned it wouldn't even admit to it!!

She asked three times and after no one answered her she took it out and put it in the checked bags area.

I watched when the plane landed and no one was looking for that oversize bag!

The fuck head was too embarrased!!:mj07:

Now Ryanair is is thinking about charging to use the shitter!!!!

:scared

Fresh on the heels of one budget airline announcing that it will ask passengers to pay extra to bring carry-on bags on board, another is considering charging them for using the lavatory.

Ryanair, which is based in Dublin, Ireland, and bills itself as "Europe's first and largest low fares airline," is mulling a plan that would require travelers to pay either 1 euro or 1 British pound (about $1.33 or $1.52) for using the bathroom on flights lasting one hour or less.

The plan, titled "Ryanair Cost Saving Proposal," was published in the airline's inflight magazine.

The carrier said it is working with Boeing to develop a coin-operated door release so that when nature calls, passengers would need to deposit the change before being able to use the facilities.

The idea is to encourage people to use restrooms in airport terminals before boarding, Ryanair said. If the airline were to proceed, the changes would be at least 12 to 18 months away.

As part of the plan, the airline is also considering removing two of the three lavatories on some of its planes so it could squeeze in up to six extra seats. The move would help reduce fares by at least 5 percent, Ryanair said.

It's not the first time the airline has broached the subject of a toilet fee. CEO Michael O'Leary told the BBC in February 2009 that he was considering the charge.

How would it fly with passengers? One hint of how Americans might feel about it may come from an informal poll posted on TripAdvisor.com last summer in which one-fifth of the respondents said they would fly on an airline that charged a fee to access the bathroom; 78 percent said they would not. About 5,300 people answered the online survey question. But the idea may be less shocking to travelers in Europe, where it's not unusual to pay a small fee to use a public restroom.

Meanwhile, Ryanair announced Tuesday that it's raising its checked luggage fee from 15 euros to 20 euros per bag for the peak vacation months of July and August.

"Ryanair is determined to incentivise passengers to travel light this summer," spokesman Stephen McNamara said in a statement. The airline urged its passengers to avoid the fees by bringing carry-on bags only.

Ryanair is already well-known for its fees and is up-front about them on its Web site, which details charges for everything from online check-in to traveling with infants. Customers haven't balked; in fact, Ryanair's passenger traffic grew 13 percent last month compared to the same time last year, the airline reported.

Low-cost carriers have embraced the concept of a la carte pricing, or keeping base fares at rock bottom levels while charging passengers for any extra services.

On Tuesday, Florida-based Spirit Airlines announced that it will charge its customers $20 to $45 for items they place in the overhead bins.

After no one claimed on flight, you should have yelled out, "It's mine.....I"m sorry. Go ahead and leave it hear......I'll pick it up when I get back."

I understand doing it for the abusers, but for Joe shmoe that's just absurd. And complete bs arguments the airline makes - it's all about making more money of course. The excuse for charging for checked bags was when fuel went through the roof but as expected it became permanant. The real reason was to have less need for overly paid baggage handlers.

How many people are traveling without any kind of bag-it's not like it's a meal where you really have a choice. Fortunately with essentially a permanent upgrade I never get charged for bags so I guess it's better for m but it doesnt change the fact that it's bs. I dont see the big boys taking things that far.

Curious as to what makes them overpaid. I have no clue their pay scale.

How many airlines are actually making money? You hint that this is only a way to make MORE money. Wouldn't they have to be making any for that statement to be true.

I know at one point only the discount airlines were profitable, and SWA is still not charging for bags.

But I do agree that charging for the first checked bag is idiotic.

The fact is, it IS a money grab. If they adhered to their own rules........there would be no issue with "carry-ons".

When the airling folks allow someone to walk past them with a suitcase........I can't blame that person for "getting away" with carrying that shit on.
