I could figure this out but there are several guys here that could save me a lot of time by giving me 'idiot' steps on fixing this thing.

The damn things has been sticking "ON" and then I go down and shake the shit out of it and it stops. That lasts about 24-72 hours. It's happened 3 times in the last week.

It's the float getting stuck. Do I have to pull the pump out and take it apart?

if so, please give me the idiot steps in fixing this problem.

I have model 3988

http://simerpump.com/pdf/SIM699.pdf

Or should I just get a new one? This is about 3 years old.

thanks

You know what if it's screwing up now and you need it and it sounds like you do a new one is cheap insurance. You don't want to wake up with a flooded basement.

Once you replace it clean up the old one and keep it for a backup.

Thanks, guys. I'll be asking morris about the new installation. The only thing I'm not sure about is the vertical pipe and what I need to seal it and whatnot.

Then, I'll see if they take this one back, like joker said, and replace it.

It's only 2 years old, weasie

I got one and it has a lifetime guarantee - they said that if something happens to it - box it up and send it to us. New one for free.

Jack - it sounds like you are getting lime build up inside. This is more than likely causing your float switch to stick in a position that keeps it running. Shaking it more than likely knocks the float back into the proper position.

Time to clean it out.

This is the problem.

I need to remove the pump.

Is there an easy way?

We ruined a dishwasher in 3 years before we got a new one and a water softener.

I'm sure once I get that slimey pump in my hands, I can take it apart and the fix will be obvious.

completely different than mine...mine`s around 14 years old....lol

this one works like mine does...sort of...

http://www.thisoldhouse.com/toh/video/0,,1631605,00.html

that rod that the float was attached to became congealed...i rubbed it down with wd 40....did the trick....

truthfully, though,we were in the house 5 years before we realized the pump didn`t work...not sure that my basement would have a problem even without the pump...

the house is built on an old rock quarry...

Can you access it? I have a sealed rubber top on mine that is fasten by bolts. Taking this off is pretty simple.

Get some thick rubber gloves and a bucket. Start breaking it off the standing pieces and pulling it out.

To avoid this in the future get some septic tank cleaner from your local hardware store and use once monthly. I have used the powder form in the past but have switched to the liquid. I think I am going to start using a combination because I still have problems but very infrequently.
