Guys and Gals

A few months ago my wife and I moved into our new home. Neither of us have ever owned our own property before. I am the worst handy man on the planet. The most work I have ever done on anything was picking up the phone and calling a landlord to fix something. Seriously I can barely operate a power drill. I don?t even mow my lawn. A nice Spanish fellow does that for me.
That being said the days of calling a landlord are over and I have some questions for you guys.

? First off there are birds in my office fireplace. I lit a fire and they would go away for awhile. Then I would come home from work and birds would be in the house. They kept flying through the fireplace and into my home. This happened 4 times. So I closed the vent. Bad idea. Now they have nested at the bottom of the fireplace on top of the vent. They are loud as hell and driving me and my pets crazy. Im afraid if I open the vent the entire nest and god knows how many birds will come crashing down into my house. How the hell do I get rid of them.

? Secondly, The last few days Dallas has been hammered by terrible winds. I awoke yesterday to find 3 or 4 shingles from my roof on my driveway. I don?t know where they came from. I don?t see any bald spots. My question is is this a problem?? Should I call in somebody to put them back? If not how many more shingles can I lose before I need to call somebody?

? Lastly. SPIDERS! Cant get rid of them. We live in a new neighborhood and there are empty lots on both sides of my house. I have been told the construction in the area will drive them to us. I have hired exterminators. They have been here twice. The other bugs have gone away since they have been here. But the spiders are still a problem. Last night I was in my garage (clumsily trying to put together some new patio furniture we bought) and I killed six of them! And I was only in there for an hour. One I killed was huge. When I squished it a bunch of baby spiders came out of it! Disgusting. The bug spray I bought says kills all spiders except Black widows and brown recluse. What the fuck is that about? Those are the only two that I am really worried about???

Anyway, if you boys could help out a retard I would very much appreciate it.

thanks:toast:

My guess is that a nice Spanish fellow is not mowing your lawn.

Spanish speaking and Spanish(meaning from Spain) are two different things.

Welcome to the 21st century....

The comments make you 'sound' ignorant, particularly because you have mentioned your wife is from Columbia in the past.

BTW, I think you ar a tool because you constantly post false records in the capping forums. It is a pet peeve of mine. This latest issue simply adds to it.

I can help with the last part - spiders (or all insects for that matter)

It can cost a min. of $60 to have some dude from a pest control company come spray your house. (1 time)

Here is what you should do (I mean, for all you know that pest guy is spraying iced tea everywhere)

Go to this site http://www.pcspeststore.com/

and buy this -

df9ef36e.jpg

THEN -

Go get a sprayer from Lowe's or Home Depot.

The concentrate poison from the pcpeststore will last you about two years if you spray 4 times a year. (The amount of time you spray depend on many factors. You might get away with once a year if you're in the city - maybe not. If you're in the country, 4 times is a must)

This is my advice only as I have lived it. I am not a professional - so far it has worked for me perfectly.

Will save you $$$$

(Also, if you go this route - keep your sprayer in a cool climate if you can. Garage won't work. The rubber tubes and gaskets will dry out quick unless you live in the mountains)

I have called you out in the past for posting false records. And you will , no doubt, do it again this year. Anyway, your thread is not ruined.

So you know, as a wanna-be capitalist and small time land owner, I got a chuckle out of the hippie comment.

Call your insurance company about the shingles. It might not look bad, but those shingles served a purpose. If it was only a couple and you know where they came off, hire a handyman to do a couple odd jobs, and make that one of them.

I am a large loss property adjuster, and can verify you this is good advice.

Maybe I was a bit cranky this morning? Is BBC rubbing off on me? It could be sleep deprivation, or the fact that I am running low on Patchouli. It might even be unusually high estrogen levels, who knows,

Either way, I am prepared to move on.

For the roof, I would do this.......

Call your insurance company.
Let the adjuster look in the attic, etc, for for water intrusion.
Allow them to prepare an estimate for the damage
if needed, provide them with an estimate from a local roofer, preferably a large company because they usually are more expensive than a mom and pop based on overhead.
Once claim is settled, hire a trusted handyman to perform a spot repair of the damaged area by tying into the existing shingles.

If the damage does not exceed the deductible, you still need to repair the roof unless you want water intrusion. North Texas is a high wind/hail area, so you will run into problems sooner than later if you do not address the shingle damage.

Good luck.........

Since you say you are not handy , I'm assuming tools and ladders are in short supply. If so, on the bird problem, I'd call a chimney sweep or fireplace shop and tell them your problem. Either one of those people will know someone or be able to come out and fix the problem. They will in all likelyhood bring a chimney cap(spark arrestor) with them which needs to be installed.
