Since you say you are not handy , I'm assuming tools and ladders are in short supply. If so, on the bird problem, I'd call a chimney sweep or fireplace shop and tell them your problem. Either one of those people will know someone or be able to come out and fix the problem. They will in all likelyhood bring a chimney cap(spark arrestor) with them which needs to be installed.

Yes ive called my contractor and he is sending out his "chimney guy" to put a screen over the top..

But we still dont know what to do about the birds on top off the vent hatch. Guess ill just have to open it and let the nest fall into the fireplace.. Try to chase the birds out the window like last time.

A chimney sweep sounds expensive...

Thanks guys!

Ignite the fireplace and watch those fly away immediately. Of course, make sure that the birds in the nest can fly, or it could get ugly!!

Curious what sounds expensive about one of these little guys.....

The reason I suggested a "sweep" is because they deal with your problem all the time and know the mechanics of the top and bottom of your fireplace. That means he can look at your damper from the bottom and see the best way to rid you of your bird problem. Then you would not have them in your home flying into stuff and crapping on your new stuff trying to get out the window. AFTER they were gone would I put on a chimney cap.

And I also don't think it would be that expensive. Especially relative to the possibility of messing up your new home. (I use to be a chimney sweep.)

I am almost afraid to answer that, but yes, I do. Was dressed like the guy in the pic. Would give a carnation when finished with job. Almost always dealing with the housewife. Swept over 3000 chimneys.

Re: "I'm almost afraid to answer that."

I did have a helper go to a job for me. According to him, attractive female answers door in her loosly draped wardrobe, and says "You're not the regular guy." "No maam, he couldn't make it." "Here's the fireplace. Go ahead and set up while I get dressed." We were both pissed.:D

hate to jump into your post but I'm in the same boat as a not too handy home owner!!! My question is how to remove a basketball round size mold spot above the shower?? Thanks for the help...do I just need to have it repainted or is it much more involved...what about spraying anything on it?

To avoid the problem after you fix it, run the fan in the bath for :30 after you shower. If no fan then have one installed by a handyman.

I'm pretty sure you have to cut that completely out of there and pray like hell it doesn't spread. Black mold or some shit, I think they call it :scared

I'm serious.

Thanks will do and will change the fan.

You better make sure you route that fan OUT of your house and not just into your attic as well. If you spread those mold spores into your attic, you are seriously fucked.

If you have that large of a mold spot, I would probably bite the bullet and pay someone to come out and test. (and I wouldn't say that in too many circumstances)
